COLLEGE BASKETBALL: USCAA TOURNAMENT CONTINUES

USCAA DIVISION ONE

Oakwood AmbassadorsFIRST SEMIFINAL – The 6th seeded OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS kept their Upset Mojo rolling, this time against the 2 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF MAINE AT FORT KENT BENGALS.

The Bengals took a 37-32 lead into the locker room at the Half only to see the Ambassadors overtake them after the break. By game’s end Oakwood University was still alive in the tournament, having defeated UM-Fort Kent by a final score of 77-72. Talik Talton led the Ambassadors with 19 points and 7 rebounds.

rochestercollegewarriorsSECOND SEMIFINAL – Another upset was in store in this game pitting the 5 seeds – the ROCHESTER COLLEGE WARRIORS – against the top seeded FLORIDA NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CONQUISTADORS.

The Warriors smothered the usually potent Conquistador offense, limiting them to just 25 points in the 1st Half while putting up 30 themselves. Florida National University made a valiant comeback effort but fell just short as Rochester College slipped past them in a 70-69 nailbiter. Peter Agba of the Warriors contributed a Double Double of 15 points and 11 rebounds for the victors.

USCAA DIVISION TWO

villa-maria-college-vikingsFIRST QUARTERFINAL – The 3rd seeded VILLA MARIA COLLEGE VIKINGS played a phenomenally long game against the 6 seeds – the PENN STATE AT GREATER ALLEGHENY LIONS.

The Vikings were on top 34-29 at Halftime but the Lions roared back to force Overtime with a 78-78 tie. The 1st OT ended in a 90-90 deadlock and the 2nd in a 96-96 tie. In the 3rd OT Villa Maria College emerged with a 106-101 triumph. The Vikings were led by Dominic Douglas with THIRTY-FIVE points.

Warren Wilson College OwlsSECOND QUARTERFINAL – Up next the 7 seeds – the WARREN WILSON COLLEGE OWLS – clashed with the 2nd seeded CENTRAL PENN COLLEGE SILVER KNIGHTS.

By the midpoint the Owls held a 33-29 edge over the Silver Knights and with both teams notching 40 points in the 2nd Half that 4 point edge was also the closing margin, too. This upset saw Warren Wilson College advance by a final count of 73-69 led by Darius Bryant’s Double Double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Penn State Dubois logoTHIRD QUARTERFINAL – The 5th seeded PENN STATE AT BRANDYWINE LIONS tangled with the 4 seeds – the NEW HAMPSHIRE TECHNICAL INSTITUTE LYNX.

A thrilling 1st Half ended with the Lions on top 35-31 in this catfight but after the break the Lynx fought their way back for a 77-77 tie to force Overtime. In the extra session PSU-Brandywine outscored New Hampshire Technical Institute 14-9 for a 91-86 victory. Donte Winfield led the way for the Lions with his astounding THIRTY-TWO points and TWENTY-ONE rebounds. Now THAT’S a Double-Double! (He also had 7 assists!)

Berkeley (NJ) KnightsFOURTH QUARTERFINAL – The Age of Chivalry returned for one night as the top seeds – the BERKELEY (NY) COLLEGE KNIGHTS – jousted with the 9th seeded VERMONT TECH GREEN KNIGHTS.

New York’s Knights were determined not to let the Green Knights pull off an Upset two evenings in a row and seized a commanding 37-21 advantage by Halftime. Vermont Tech fought hard but ultimately could gain little traction against Berkeley College, which won the game 73-58. Michael Taylor tossed in 22 points to lead the Knights.
