The 5 seeds – the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES – battled the 4th seeded UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY SPIRES in what turned out to be a TWELVE INNING marathon. After a scoreless 1st Inning the Swedes made it a 1-0 game in the 2nd. The Spires tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the 6th Inning and neither team scored again until the top of the 12th when Bethany College added 2 more runs. The Swedes shut out USM in the bottom of the Inning for a 3-1 triumph. Pitcher Robert Johnson got the save.
KENTUCKY INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
ROUND ONE – GAME ONE – The 4th seeded BRESCIA UNIVERSITY BEARCATS took the diamond against the 5 seeds – the ALICE LLOYD COLLEGE EAGLES. The Bearcats got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st Inning then made that a 6-0 lead in the 3rd. By the 5th Inning it was an 8-2 game and from there the Eagles shut out Brescia but could only add 4 more runs. The Bearcats won the game 8-6. Christian McHatton was the victorious Pitcher.
ROUND ONE – GAME TWO – This game pitted the 3 seeds – the storied INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST GRENADIERS – against the 6th seeded ASBURY UNIVERSITY EAGLES. The Eagles surprised the spectators by seizing a 2-0 advantage in the 1st Inning but by the end of the 3rd Inning the Grenadiers had taken a 4-3 lead. IU- Southeast converted that into a 6-3 lead in the 4th Inning and the rout was on. In the end the Grenadiers sliced apart Asbury University to the tune of FOURTEEN to THREE! Pitcher Jarrod Messex got the W.
UPSET OF THE DAY – The 3rd game of Round One in the MSC saw the 7th seeded SHAWNEE STATE BEARS topple the 2 seeds – the SAINT CATHARINE COLLEGE PATRIOTS. This Pitcher’s duel was scoreless through 6 Innings before the Bears at last got on the board for a 1-0 lead in the top of the 7th. They added an additional run in the 9th while continuing to shut out the Patriots for a 2-0 win! Derek Moore pitched all 9 Innings for Shawnee State, Iron Man style!
DEFENDING CHAMPS WITH AN UPSET OF THEIR OWN – The Defending National Champions of NAIA baseball – the 5th seeded CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS – brought down the 4 seeds – the GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS. A 2-1 lead for the Bulldogs in the 1st Inning became a 4-1 lead in the 2nd and a 6-1 lead in the 3rd. From there the Champs piled it on for a FOURTEEN to TWO victory. Pitcher Stevie Smith got the win for Cumberland University.
ROUND ONE – GAME ONE – The day had actually started with a favorite winning. The top seeds – the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS took on the 8th seeded UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS. Neither team scored until the 2nd Inning when the Tigers took a 1-0 lead. Campbellsville University added runs in the 4th, 5th and 7th for a 7-1 victory. Indalecio Romo was the winning Pitcher.
ROUND ONE – GAME FOUR – And the day ended with a clash between the 3rd seeded LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS and the 6 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS. I hate to overuse the expression “Pitcher’s duel” but there’s no other way to describe this game which went scoreless for 7 1/2 Innings before the Blue Raiders notched a run in the bottom of the 7th. That was the extent of the scoring in this 1-0 win for Lindsey Wilson College. Ryan Hartman pitched all 9 Innings for the victors.
