ANIMAL HOUSE 2015: SABRINA ERDELY BLUES

Animal House 2015The 2015 remake of Animal House hits theaters this week just in time to coincide with the Columbia School of “Journalism” (LMAO) releasing its results about the Sabrina Erdely UVA article at Rolling Stone magazine. The fraudulent report Jann Wenner’s publication ran has been exposed as a failure of every basic practice of reportorial decency and fundamental fact-finding.

Cult director Eddie Wozniak scores again with this bawdy and hilarious look at an innocent fraternity of young men at an unnamed university in the American south. The fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, is a heroic band of youths minding their own business when they are blindsided by a sleazy, opportunistic reporter for Strolling Rune magazine, campus hate groups and the university’s corrupt president.

That character, Teresa Sunnava, is “the Dean Wormer of the 21st Century”, as the New York Times review of the film puts it. Teresa sets out to destroy the innocent Phi Kappa Psi fraternity just to score cheap political points and push an agenda for her corrupt political party. All her efforts come to nothing and as the comedy nears its climax Wozniak even has Sunnava repeat Dean Wormer’s immortal line “I hate those guys” although in this case the line is amended to “I hate those guys … and ALL guys, really.”

Unlike the original Animal House, this remake sets its action far beyond the college campus. Much of the comedy takes place at Strolling Rune magazine, where the pudgy publisher is depicted as a pathetic 1960’s generation partisan trying desperately to recapture his youth by using an obviously false narrative to feed national hysteria. The publisher is joined by another decrepit 1960’s leftover – cartoonist B.D. Truman, who wipes out the last of his own credibility by backing the fraudulent hit piece on the Phi Kappa Psi boys.

Sabrina Erdely, the Janet Cooke of the 21st Century

The villainous reporter, Sherry Ehrlichman Rubin, is a pitch-perfect sendup of what passes for a “journalist” in the present day. The character is depicted as a hack with a laziness so profound its pitiful and a political agenda so blatant it makes the days of Hearst look like a Golden Age of journalistic integrity.

In the end the bad guys get what’s coming to them as the frame-job on the good-hearted guys at Phi Kappa Psi falls apart in the national spotlight and Strolling Rune gets sued out of existence. University President Sunnava is forced to resign and Sherry Ehrlichman Rubin winds up living in a refrigerator box next to other disgraced journalists like Stephen Glass, Janet Cooke and Brian Williams.

I wasn’t as impressed with the movie as the New York Times reviewer obviously was. Wozniak’s direction flags at times during the film but overall it’s a riotous laugh-fest. Especially the part where the fraternity guys, at the height of the attacks on them, take a “road trip” to a place called Ferguson, MO. The “Mind if we dance with your dates” scene this time is a REAL killer!

Obviously this movie doesn’t exist. But it should.
