If it’s Memorial Day that means the usual orgy of college baseball action! Yesterday the NAIA had a day off but action continued in the College World Series for the NCAA Divisions Two and Three as well as all three divisions of the NJCAA.
* NCAA DIVISION 2 *
DAY TWO – GAME ONE – The SETON HILL UNIVERSITY GRIFFINS got cooking immediately in this game, taking a 3-0 lead in the 1st Inning. Their opponents – the MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS – made it a 3-2 ballgame in the 2nd Inning bringing an end to the scoring until the Griffins added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th. Seton Hill’s Mike Bittel was the winning pitcher in this 4-2 affair.
DAY TWO – GAME TWO – In this 10 Inning clash the COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY MAVERICKS faced the SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE SPARTANS. The Mavericks fell behind 2-0 in the 1st Inning but tied it up at 2-2 in the 3rd. A 3-2 6th Inning lead for Colorado Mesa became a 4-3 edge by the 8th. The Spartans made it 4-4 in the 9th, necessitating the extra Inning, during which the Mavericks won it 5-4. Garrett Carpenter got the win for Colorado Mesa.

DAY THREE – GAME ONE – The UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE HUSKIES (2013 runners- up) battled the BALDWIN- WALLACE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS in this elimination game. After 2 scoreless Innings the Yellow Jackets managed a 1-0 lead in the 3rd and 3-0 in the 4th. The Huskies’ bats exploded for a 5-3 advantage in the 5th, with Baldwin- Wallace making it a 5-4 game in the 6th. Another big Inning for Southern Maine resulted in a 9-5 score with the Huskies adding 2 more runs in the 8th for an 11-5 final tally. USM’s Andrew Richards was credited with the victory.
DAY THREE – GAME TWO – Another elimination game followed. This one pitted the CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS against the EMORY UNIVERSITY EAGLES. An action- packed 1st Inning left the Eagles leading 3-2 but the Red Dragons had taken a 4-3 lead by the 2nd. In the 5th Emory went back on top 6-4 and by the 7th Inning had expanded that to a 9-5 advantage. Cortland State mustered 2 more runs in the 8th but none in the 9th. Hans Hansen of the Eagles got the 9-7 win.
DAY THREE – GAME THREE – Closing out Day Three was a showdown between the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT WHITEWATER WARHAWKS and the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS TOMMIES. This grudge match went scoreless for 3 Innings and stood at 1-1 after the 4th. In the bottom of the 5th the Warhawks banged out a 4-1 lead with the Tommies cutting it to a 4-3 game in the top of the 8th. That was short- lived as Whitewater slammed in 6 runs in their half of the Inning. UST notched another run in the 9th for a final score of 10-4. Warhawks pitcher Connor Hurst was the winner.

DAY TWO – GAME ONE – The COLUMBIA STATE CHARGERS took on the JOHNSON COUNTY COLLEGE CAVALIERS in this first of two elimination games yesterday. The Chargers seized control with a 9-2 lead in the 2nd Inning and never looked back. They shut out the Cavaliers the rest of the way and added 3 more runs themselves for a TWELVE to TWO mauling of their opponents. Columbia State’s Tyler Stewart threw for the victory.
DAY TWO – GAME TWO – The COCHISE COLLEGE APACHES were happy to send the DELGADO COLLEGE DOLPHINS home for the season with the Cavaliers. The Apaches led 1-0 in the 1st Inning, 3-1 in the 3rd and 4-2 in the 5th. In the 6th Inning Cochise College got a 3-run burst for a 7-2 lead which became a 9-3 advantage in the 7th. The hard- fighting Dolphins added 2 runs in the 9th for a final score of 9-5 in favor of the Apaches. Pitcher Xavier Altamirano picked up the win.

DAY TWO – GAME ONE – This 10 Inning affair was played between the PASCO HERNANDO STATE CONQUISTADORS and the MERCER COUNTY COLLEGE VIKINGS. A 1-0 2nd Inning edge for the Conquistadors doubled to 2-0 in the 6th. The Vikings came through with 1 run each in the 7th and 8th Innings to tie things up at 2-2. After a scoreless 9th Inning Pasco Hernando State got a run in the bottom of the 10th for a 3-2 victory. Danny Rodriguez was the winning pitcher.
DAY TWO – GAME TWO – The loser in this next game faced elimination as the NORTHERN OKLAHOMA COLLEGE JETS squared off against the WESTCHESTER COLLEGE VIKINGS. This was a game characterized by the Jets leading and the Vikings staying as close behind as they could. 2-1 in the 2nd became 3-2 in the 3rd which became 6-2 in the 5th before Westchester made it 6-3 in the 6th. After the 7th Northern Oklahoma led 8-4 and the Vikings added 2 more runs in the 9th for a final score of 8-6. Jets pitcher Austin Hilton snagged the win.
DAY TWO – GAME THREE – Another elimination game closed out Day Two. The MESA COLLEGE THUNDERBIRDS played the LINCOLN LAND COLLEGE LOGGERS in a game that was all- Thunderbirds. At least it was after 4 scoreless Innings. Mesa College put up 2,6 and 1 runs in the 5th, 6th and 7th Innings respectively for a 9-0 blowout. John Havird pitched the entire game for the Thunderbirds.

DAY TWO – GAME ONE – This game was a battle for survival between the HERKIMER COLLEGE GENERALS and the SUFFOLK COLLEGE SHARKS. The Generals wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard and led 3-0 in the 1st Inning. That became a 5-2 lead in the 4th and 7-2 in the 5th. That also wound up being the final score as neither team gave up another run for the remainder of the game. This win – which sent the Sharks home – went to Generals pitcher Nicholas Burch.
DAY TWO – GAME TWO – A trip home was also in the offing for the loser of this next contest which saw the WAUBONSEE COLLEGE CHIEFS take on the PRINCE GEORGE’S COLLEGE OWLS. The Chiefs logged 2 runs each for the first 3 Innings to lead 6-2 going into the 4th. The cagey Owls made it a 6-5 game in the 5th Inning and 7-6 in the 6th. From there Waubonsee College took control, slamming in 3 runs in the 7th and 2 in the 8th for a final score of 12-6. Pitcher Jordan Jones won the game for the Chiefs.
DAY TWO – GAME THREE – The TYLER COLLEGE APACHES decided to fold, spindle and mutilate the NORTHERN ESSEX COLLEGE KNIGHTS in Game Three of yesterday’s action. A 7-0 3rd Inning lead for the Apaches just got worse and worse for the Knights as the game went on. By the time the dust settled in this buttkicking Tyler had won by an embarrassing score of SEVENTEEN to TWO! Northern Essex’s 2 runs came in the 4th Inning. Daniel Brown pitched the winning game.
DAY TWO – GAME FOUR – Day Two came to an end with this clash between the CUMBERLAND COUNTY COLLEGE DUKES and the SAINT CLOUD TECH CYCLONES. The Cyclones only mustered 1 run in the entire game and that didn’t come until the bottom of the 9th Inning. The Dukes, meanwhile had put up at least 1 run each in the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th and 9th to win the game by a final score of 7-1. Cody Stashak of the Dukes OWNED the Cyclones in this win.

DAY TWO – GAME ONE – The COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS GIANTS and the OXNARD COLLEGE CONDORS played an offense- heavy game to start the day. A 1-0 lead for the Giants in the 1st Inning became a 3-1 advantage for the Condors in the 3rd. A 7-2 Oxnard College lead after 4 Innings morphed into a 7-7 tie when College of the Sequoias had a huge 5th Inning. The Giants led 10-9 in the 7th and rode that score to a victory. Blake Edmonson pitched the save.
DAY TWO – GAME TWO – The ORANGE COAST COLLEGE PIRATES did battle with the SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE MUSTANGS in Game Two. After 2 scoreless Innings to start the game the Pirates managed a 2-1 lead in the 3rd. After that Orange Coast College shut out the Mustangs while adding another run each in the 4th and 6th Innings for a final tally of 4-1. OCC’s Jacob Hill was the winning pitcher.
DAY TWO – GAME THREE – This final game of the day pitted the SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE MUSTANGS against the COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS GIANTS. The Giants were only able to muster 1 run in the 3rd Inning and then 2 more in the 7th Inning to tie the Mustangs at 3-3. San Joaquin Delta College exploded for EIGHT more runs in the top of the 9th for an ELEVEN to THREE triumph. Eric Sandness got credit for the win.
