MUSH MADNESS: ROSEMARY WOZNIAK’S PROFILE OF DOGSLED RACER PAIGE DROBNY

Paige DAs the 2014 Iditarod Dog Sled Race continues I once again turn you over to my sister Rosemary Wozniak, Balladeer’s Blog’s Official Iditarod Correspondent. Take it away, Rose!

As I have mentioned on my Facebook Page, a woman has not won the Iditarod since 1990. I am hoping that this year one of the women mushers will win. Today I am going to write about Paige Drobny who will be running in her second Iditarod.

According to her official biography on the Iditarod website Paige, 39, was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and says she moved all over growing up. She graduated from Virginia Tech in 1997 with her B.S. in Biology and from UAF (GO NANOOKS!) in 2008 with her M.S. in Fisheries Oceanography. Before moving to Fairbanks in 2005 for graduate school, she lived in Vermont and was a fisheries biologist.

Paige obviously enjoys her life as reflected in statements like the following: “I enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. I work as a fishery biologist and help my husband, Cody Strathe, build dogsleds for our company, DogPaddle Designs, during the summer In 2010, Cody and I decided to give it a whirl and entered the GinGin 200 together…we had a blast, and suddenly we were on the slippery slope.

“After finishing the Yukon Quest last year with a happy and health team, Iditarod seemed like the next logical step for someone with an addiction to travelling by dog team. In my rookie year of Iditarod my dogs did an amazing job.

“I am coming back because the trail is beautiful and I want to see how this veteran team can do this year. I am also running the 2014 Iditarod in remembrance of my dog, Dorado.”

Hope everyone takes a look at the history behind the race and I hope you will come to love and enjoy it as much as I do.
