Yesterday was Day One of the College World Series in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association). Spalding, the 2012 champions, did not make the World Series field of 10 teams this year so there will definitely be a new title holder when all is said and done.
The top seeds, the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS, had their hands full with the 9th seeded BRIARCLIFFE COLLEGE BULLDOGS. The Bulldogs are no strangers to the postseason and took the 2011 World Series championship in the USCAA. The Builders took them down in a 2-1 Instant Classic.
Earlier in the day Briarcliffe survived their opening round game with the 8th seeded ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE-BROOKLYN BEARS by a score of 4-1.
Meanwhile, in the 7 spot, the LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY-BELLEVILLE LYNX upset the 2nd seeded CLARK STATE EAGLES in a 5-3 nailbiter.
That stunner was set up by the Lynx’s opening round victory over the 10th seeded PENN TECH WILDCATS. The Lynx took that game by a score of 8-5.
The 3 seeds, the UNIVERSITY OF CINCINATTI-CLERMONT COUGARS, took care of business as expected, winning their clash with the 6th seeded SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS. The Cougars defeated the BYU of the east in a 6-0 shutout. And in the game between the 4th seeded SELMA UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS and the 5th seeded PSU-GREATER ALLEGHENY NITTANY LIONS the Bulldogs pitched a shutout of their own in a 4-0 win.
College baseball rocks! So does this USCAA!
