COLLEGE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES IN D2 AND D3

Drury Panthers logoNCAA DIVISION TWO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – Two 1 seeds, the DRURY UNIVERSITY PANTHERS and the METRO STATE UNIVERSITY ROADRUNNERS clashed yesterday for the D2 national title. The Roadrunners had the Panthers off their game in the 1st half and were slowly but surely pulling further and further away. By the break Metro State led by a score of 39-27 but Drury Head Coach Steve Hesser reminded his squad that they still had 20 minutes in which to salvage the game.

In the 2nd half the Panthers chipped away at Metro State’s lead and with 13:29 left in the game Drury had tied it up at 53-53. With just 22 seconds remaining Drury’s Alex Hall, Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: The Assassin, sunk two free-throws and put his team ahead of the Roadrunners  74-73. Despite much scrambling in the final seconds that turned out to be the final score. Congratulations to Drury!

amherstNCAA DIVISION THREE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – The AMHERST COLLEGE LORD JEFFS ended the Cinderella run of the hard-fighting UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN BAYLOR CRUSADERS yesterday afternoon. The Lord Jeffs started the title game with a spirit-draining 10-0 run and were in control throughout the game. The Crusaders came charging back in typical fashion and at length they trailed Amherst by just 5 points, 33-28. By halftime the score stood at Lord Jeffs  38 Crusaders  30. As the 2nd half played out UMHB would periodically pull within 4 points of Amherst only to see the Lord Jeffs pull away again. With 13 minutes left in the game Amherst College led by a score of 52-43 and when all the dust had settled they won by a final tally of 87-70. Congratulations to the Lord Jeffs for their second national championship and their first since 2007.
