HARROGATE, TN – On Tuesday night in the Railsplitter men’s basketball team’s 96-84 victory over conference opponent Catawba College, Lincoln Memorial University forward D’Mario Curry (Detroit, MI) reached a milestone when he scored a personal best 41 points to push his career total over the 1000 point mark and to set a new Turner Arena single-game scoring record.

Since his first season with the Railsplitters as a sophomore, Curry has been named Continue reading

AND THE OSU-MARION SCARLET WAVE COMES IN AT NUMBER ONE!

The votes for my latest Top 20 contest have all been counted and the winner of the designation “Coolest-Named USCAA and NCCAA Sports Team” is the Ohio State-Marion Scarlet Wave! The name certainly is pretty cool and that logo is very eye-catching! If you want to follow Scarlet Wave sports just go here: http://osumarion.osu.edu/ScarletWave/

In second place were the New Hampshire Technical Institute Lynx. Once again it seems impossible to separate a cool name from a cool logo and you can’t help wondering how much carry over votes each one brings the other. To follow the Lynx sports teams click here: http://www.nhti.edu/campuslife/athletics.html

For the first time in Balladeer’s Blog’s history (a whopping 6 months I grant you, but still … ) the voting in a Top 20 List has resulted in a 3-way tie for 3rd place. Here are the 3 schools in alphabetical order:

The Lincoln Christian University Red Lions start us off with their snazzy logo and their memorable nickname. To beard these Lions in their den go here: http://www.lincolnchristian.edu/athletics/

Next we have the Maine-Augusta Moose, in whose honor I’ll throw out a new marketing slogan – “Moose: It’s singular AND plural!” (Well it’s better than my first one – “Moose: It’s what’s for dinner!” ) To follow these teams whose marching band should play the Bullwinkle theme music go here: http://www.uma.edu/athletics.html

We close with the Ozark Christian College Ambassadors and you have got to love the poetic coolness of their name as well as the fairly awesome logo that they sport. Who wouldn’t  want to go play for their teams or at least attend the games so you can hear announcers say things like “And the Ambassadors negotiate their way into the lead” or other related phrases? To follow their teams go here: http://occ.edu/students/default.aspx?id=90

Honorable mention goes to the Piedmont Baptist Conquerors, who were just 4 votes behind LCU, UMA and OCC. To view the entire list and see who you think got robbed click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/11/24/the-20-coolest-named-uscaa-and-nccaa-sports-teams/

VOLLEYBALL ROYALTY: A QUICK Q AND A WITH LADY RAILSPLITTER LAUREN KIWACKA

The Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters volleyball team had a stellar season and Lauren Kiwacka is one of the reasons why. The senior rightside  hitter/ setter was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Southeast All- Region Team. This following a season in which she and her teammates tied a school record by going 23-8, recorded an all-time high in conference victories at 12 and helped Coach Mike Smith (If that IS his real name. I’m kidding!) pick up his 350th career victory. Kiwacka ends her LMU career with 58 double-doubles, 12 triple-doubles, 660 kills, 3,159 assists, 140 service aces, 1,164 digs and 250 blocks. It was great to talk to an athlete who wears the number 4 but is all about the team and not themselves.

 Lauren Kiwacka

Position: RS/S

Official Balladeer’s Blog Nickname: Lethal Lauren

What should opponents fear the most from you?  “The chemistry I have with my team. When we are all together and work as a team there is no stopping us. I expect a lot out of my team and they expect just as much if not more out of me.”

Why would you say you had the kind of successful season you had?   “As an athlete and competitor I am never satisfied because there is always Continue reading

CHRISTMAS SEASON DIVERSION – MY REVIEW OF SANTA AND THE ICE CREAM BUNNY (1972)

We are now just 12 days from Christmas so I figured what better time to update my Bad Movie page with a review of the atrocious attempt at entertainment called Santa And The Ice Cream Bunny, a live-action clunker from the famous Barry Mahon. For more Bad Movies: https://glitternight.com/bad-movies/

Santa and the Ice Cream BunnySANTA AND THE ICE CREAM BUNNY – (1972) – Category: Bad enough and with a classically weird premise but not fun-bad enough for my highest rating       This thoroughly bizarre little holiday-themed movie will redefine the term “low-budget” for you. Normally I cut some slack to films that are clearly targeted at children but this bomb doesn’t seem targeted at children as much as it seems targeted at morons.

The opening scene of this odd movie is set in a very cramped set that is supposed to be Santa’s North Pole workshop. Some very tall children are dressed as elves and are awkwardly pretending to be working on toys that are quite obviously already completed, lending the scene a joyously inept “grade-school Christmas play” kind of feel.

The opening credits inform us that these children/elves are players from “Ruth Foreman’s Pied Piper Playhouse” as they sing a song that has been so poorly-recorded we can only make out an occassional few words. The gist of the song seems to be that the elves are wondering where Santa is since it’s only a few days until Christmas. Continue reading
