VOLLEYBALL INFERNO: A QUICK Q AND A WITH ALVERNO’S JORDAN NICKELATTI

Jordan Nickelatti, in her first year playing volleyball for the Alverno Inferno, has been named to the Northern Athletics Conference All-Sportsmanship Team. She was a starter in all 25 games and compiled 37 kills (I’ll admit it- I’m all out of cute jokes playing on the volleyball term “kills”), 117 digs (And yes, she remembered to “Call before you dig”) and 19 service aces. Her 5 aces against the Indiana University Northwest Redhawks tied the Inferno’s 5-set-single- match record. Since Nickelatti will be keeping her talents in Milwaukee, it seemed a good time to subject her to some of Balladeer’s Blog’s usual probing, yet inane, questions.

GOING GREENY: WARRIORS VOLLEYBALL COACH JEN GREENY NOTCHES HER 100TH WIN

Jen Greeny, Women’s Volleyball Coach for the Lewis-Clark State Warriors, recorded her 100th win to go 100-22 overall with the program. Yesterday the 9th-ranked Warriors defeated the 21st-ranked Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears for their 11th win in a row and Greeny’s Centennial Milestone. Winning is a way of life for Coach Greeny, who has led her team to 3 straight Frontier Conference titles in just her 4th year at the helm.

“It’s been great,” said Greeny about the milestone. “The players we’ve had have been amazing, and they’ve really bought into the system. A lot of the credit goes to them. I thought we came out playing exceptionally well. Especially with our serving and defense we got them out of rhythm.”

The Warriors are now 19-1 overall and 9-0 in Frontier Conference play. Readers of Balladeer’s Blog are familiar with Greeny’s star players so let’s review their stats in this win along with their Official Balladeer’s Blog Nicknames.

Nicole “The Gray Seal” Graybeal had 13 kills, 3 aces and 2 block assists; “Killin'” Kelli Tikker logged 12 kills, 11 digs and an ace; Deddiy Alaimaleata, “The District Attorney“, had 11 kills, 1 solo block and 1 block assist. That brings us to the Warriors’ setters. Kim “Special K” Fong had 23 assists and Alyssa Wold, “Root Beer” herself (because her initials are A&W), recorded 22 assists. On defense “Cat Burglar” Katie Hinrichs had 13 digs while “J-Bird” Jenika Bird Jeppson contributed 5 block assists.

THE FEEL-GOOD STORY OF THE FALL CONTINUES

The Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers volleyball team continues their movie-like turnaround. At 1 point the ladies were a very glum 1-7 and are now boasting a 13-9 record. The Grenadiers’ latest victory came over the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks, who are sure to be featured as 1 of my Cool-Named Teams Of The Day sometime soon. IUS won in 4 sets, by scores of 25-20, 25-13, 18-25 and 25-18. Appropriate for a team called the Grenadiers the ladies had a total of 47 kills in the match. For some noteable stats from the IUS players, complete with their official Balladeer’s Blog nicknames, just read on:

Lindsey “Aces Wild” Maymon had a match-high 13 kills (and 21 wounded – rimshot) while her teammate “Judex” Julie Roeder had 11 kills of her own. (Insert your own “A Kill-Count Of One’s Own” joke here) “Stormin'” Lauren McCartin contributed 3 kills, 3 assists and 7 kills. McCartin normally plays at the “short-stop of volleyball” libero position but for this game was replaced in that role by Emily “Starry” Knight.

The Grenadiers next travel to the Pikeville Bears this Saturday and will be back in New Albany, IN on Tuesday, October 12th, hosting the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders. Tickets for IUS volleyball matches are $7 for adults. If you tell them you read about the team in Balladeer’s Blog they’ll pay YOU $7.00! (I’m kidding!)
