QUICK TAKES- GRIDIRON STYLE

St Ambrozzzzzzzzze Football Media Dayzzzzzzzz – The St Ambrose University Fighting Bees (Love that name!) announced they will be holding their football media day August 24th at SAU’s Lohman Arena. Head Coach Mike Magistrelli and several Fighting Bees football players will be available for questions.

Cumberlands Football Camp Anything But Bland – The University of the Cumberlands Patriots camp for High School football teams in Kentucky and Tennessee was held recently. Patriots Head Football Coach John Bland commented “The…Camp was a success in 2010. All of the coaches…were pleased with the progress their teams made during camp.”

You Say Cumberlands, I Say Cumberland, Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off – We move now from the University of the Cumberlands Patriots to the Cumberland University Bulldogs. The Bulldogs  football players report this weekend with meetings scheduled all day Saturday and camp beginning next week. CU starts its 2010 campaign at the Austin Peay Governors Sept 2nd.

“Hello, I must be going!” – The South Dakota School Of Mines And Technology Hardrockers and the Black Hills State University Yellowjackets open camps this weekend for what will be their final football season in the Dakota Athletic Conference. The Yellowjackets went 6-4 last season and defeated the Dickinson State Blue Hawks, the conference champions, in The Dacotah Bowl to end the 2009 season.

Strengthen Your Corps, er, Core – Yes, that was another nod to the Marine Corps origins of the Gyrenes, the nickname of the Ave Maria University sports teams. The Gyrenes begin intercollegiate play in 2011 for football but recently held a football camp for 9 Florida High School teams. This four-day camp, whose theme was “Strengthen Your Core”, was held in partnership with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“I Guess Everyone Loves Cougars” Dept – The Sioux Falls Cougars were picked to win the Great Plains Athletic Conference title yet again by the coaches and SID’s in that league, it was revealed at last week’s GPAC Media Day. The defending national champions in the NAIA were also ranked number one in various national preseason polls as well. Will it be a threepeat for USF football this season? Cougar lovers everywhere will be watching to find out!

Get Your Grub On With The Rangers – The Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers have been picked to win the Central States Football League title this year by the coaches, SID’s and select media members. They’ve also got their football Media Day coming up August 14th and the First Annual Ranger Kickoff Barbecue set for August 21st.

“MITCHELL!” 5 NAIA KICKERS ON THE FRED MITCHELL AWARD WATCH LIST

Forget about the Gallano and Mistretta Awards Watch  Lists (bad movie buffs will get it), the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List is out and no less than 5 NAIA kickers made the list! As always all nicknames are purely my own demented creation and to the best of my knowledge have never been applied to these players in real life. Here they are in alphabetical order:

C.J. “Grady” Gradoville – Morningside Mustangs

Tom “Tommy The Linchpin” Lynch – St Xavier Cougars

Tyler “The Smiler” Padgett – Central Methodist Eagles

Andy “A-Smit” Smith – South Dakota Mines Hardrockers

“Brassy” Braden Wieking – Sioux Falls Cougars

The award is given based on accomplishments on the gridiron and in the community. Here’s hoping all 5 have a stellar season!

CUMBERLAND BULLDOGS FOOTBALL MAKES HOME GAMES EVEN MORE SPECIAL

The Cumberland University Bulldogs have got special events centered around 5 of their 6 home games this coming season. Director of Athletics Ron Pavan informed me of these activities recently when we were hang-gliding through the Grand Canyon. I suggested he call the events “Pavan-athon 2010” or maybe “Pavanapalooza” but he declined.

***The first home game is September 11th against the Campbellsville Tigers. CU Athetics and Sherry’s Run are co-sponsors for the event and participants will get half-off admission price at the gate if they wear the 2010 T-shirt. Wearing the 2009 T-shirt gets you in for free! (I’m kidding!) There will also be an Area-Wide Tailgate Party for this home-opener, with a live band and free food from area vendors available beginning at 11AM.

***Homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend are both scheduled for the game against the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders October 2nd. In addition to inducting 6 former Bulldog coaches and players into the Hall Of Fame there will be the CU Alumni Department 5K Dawg Dash as well as a “Live On The Lawn Concert” in front of Memorial Hall. This event replaces last year’s “Ron On The Lawn Concert” which featured Ron Pavan and The Pavanes doing their covers of songs by The Red Elvises. The unfortunate guitar/watermelon/samurai sword incident during the song On My Way To Vegas is the reason behind the change.

***On October 9th Cumberland University and the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will team up for FCA Day (they rejected my idea to call it “CU On FCA Day” as being “too childish”). Anyone wearing an FCA T-shirt will get free admission to that day’s game against the Shorter Hawks. (I know, you’re dying for a Taller Hawks joke but you’re not gonna get it!)

***On October 30th, Cumberland University will host a canned food drive as the team takes on the Union Bulldogs, unless they’re on strike. All kidding aside, though, I once owned a non-union bulldog and it just wasn’t worth the hassle. (I named the dog “Scab” by the way) All CU fans attending the game will get $2.00 off admission if they donate at least one item of canned food.

***Senior Day will be November 6th when the Bulldogs go up against the Belhaven Blazers. There will also be a Chili Cook-Off sponsored by the Student Government Association so the fans can give a fond, if somewhat gassy, farewell to the seniors.

VIKINGS INVADE INDIAN FOOTHILLS PARK IN MARSHALL, MO

"We're tired of waiting for Brett Favre to make up his mind about joining us! We're cleaning up this park NOW!" (Oops! Wrong team of Vikings!)

Everyone remembers the Vikings…plundering, pillaging, picking up litter…wait, picking up litter?

Yes, picking up litter. The Missouri Valley College Vikings football team proved that doing good work in the community is every bit as manly as sacking and burning a village, and with only half the calories. (I don’t even know what that means.) The Vikings football players and their coaching staff volunteered at Continue reading

SAINT XAVIER COUGARS QUARTERBACK ANTHONY KROPP JOINS NEW SUPERHERO TEAM

Saint Xavier (IL) University senior quarterback Anthony Kropp will be appearing in the summer blockbuster The Super Six. More specifically the College Fanz Sports Network’s NAIA Super Six. In the tradition of the Squadron Supreme, the Teen Titans and the Fantastic Four this new alliterative superhero team assembles various super-powered individuals to perform various amazing feats. The unique twist with this super-team is that they are all NAIA college football players. Neat gimmick, eh?

It’s easy to see why Kropp was included. Last season he completed 62 percent of his passes for 4,425 yards and 43 touchdowns. He also rushed for 6 touchdowns and led the Cougars to a 13-1 record before losing in the playoffs to eventual national champion Sioux Falls.

Kropp’s character in the film is Crop-Man, who has all the powers and abilities of a harvested crop. (I’m no expert but shouldn’t your superhero name be at least a little more different from your real name? Not since Super President has an alias been more transparent.) This sure-fire hit premiers Thursday August 26th, the same night the SXU Cougars kick off their season at the Bethel (TN) Wildcats.

Clearly the people behind The Super Six are already thinking sequel since the film includes some teasers implying that Anthony Kropp’s SXU teammate, senior wide receiver Mike Maher, will have a larger role in the second film.

HOW SWEDE IT IS!

Former Bethany Swedes head football coach Ted Kessinger was enshrined this past weekend in the College Football Hall Of Fame in South Bend, IN. During his tenure as Bethany College head football coach, Ted Kessinger had an overall record of 219-57-1 and led the Swedes into the NAIA top 25 poll 20 separate times. During his 28 seasons, Bethany College never had a losing season, making him one of the most successful coaches in NAIA history. Division 1 football has Joe Pa, NAIA football had “Teddy the K” (or if you prefer “Tedinger” or maybe “Teddy Kess”) who led the Swedes to 16 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference titles and 13 playoff appearances.

Kessinger himself wasn’t short of personal distinction either, winning the Conference Coach of the Year honors 11 times and was the NAIA’s winningest active coach in both percentage of victories and total wins upon retiring in 2003. The former Swedes coach also coached the first American football team to play in Sweden. (I didn’t realize it worked that way! Does that mean if I coach a football team called The Tahitians I can get a head coaching gig in Tahiti? Sweet!)

When talking about his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame Kessinger said, “I wasn’t aware this was coming down the road. It’s a lot to be thankful for.” Today, Kessinger works as a lay minister with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Kiwanis Club and has been honored by the Kansas branch of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also serves as a special consultant to the Bethany College president.

“The College Football Hall of Fame is honored to host so many notable contributors to the game in South Bend, celebrating this tremendous accolade,” said College Football Hall of Fame Executive Director Lisa Klunder. “Enshrinement in the College Football Hall of Fame is a rare distinction shared by only the most accomplished players, and our festival boasts a myriad of events to highlight this extraordinary achievement.”

AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY BUILDS INTEREST IN THEIR 2011 DEBUT FOOTBALL SEASON BY CONSTRUCTING THE WORLD’S LARGEST FOOTBALL HELMET

“Building it from the ground up” has been the theme for the Ave Maria University Gyrenes as they prepare for their inaugural NAIA football season in 2011. It could also be the slogan for one of the most ambitious construction projects since the days of the Pharaohs as nearly 3,000 students and residents in Ave Maria, FL have been employed in ’round the clock shifts to erect a massive 819 foot tall replica of the helmets the Gyrenes pigskin team will be wearing.

This enormous replica helmet, seen in the foreground of the above photo, sits majestically on the shores of Lake Gyrene, an artificial lake whose grayish-blue waters lie serenely under the gaze of this monolithic tribute to the “can do” attitude of Ave Maria University Athletics.

Funding for this enormous project came from eccentric billionaire Tony Stark and the attention Stark has received for this unusual undertaking inspired an obviously jealous Mark Cuban to make with his usual paranoid rambling about how nobody ever sees Tony Stark and Iron Man together at the same time. Whatever, Mark!

I was in Ave Maria, FL recently to cover the excitement that is growing throughout the NAIA for the Gyrenes’ gridiron debut in 2011.

Gyrenes Head Football Coach Barry Fagan and I took a chartered helicopter up to the top of the replica helmet, set up some lawn chairs and, as we soaked in the panoramic view of the Ave Maria campus, Lake Gyrene and the sprawling metropolis of Ave Maria, I began my interview.

On his way to being the head man for Gyrenes football Coach Fagan’s career saw him take part in a 39-0-2 undefeated streak at Division II Ferris State University, a streak that brought the school 4 consecutive D2 playoff appearances culminating in a trip to the National Semi-Finals.

In the coach’s career at Hillsdale College, also in D2, the football team made its first playoff appearance in school history. The fact that that feat was accomplished while maintaining the school’s rank as the Number 1 academic institution in all of Division II gives you an idea of the qualities that made Coach Fagan seem the ideal fit for Ave Maria University. He strongly believes that teams can win without compromising on character, intellect or spirituality.

Consistent with that philosophy is the pride Coach Fagan takes in the way his former players will call him up years after graduation and thank him for making them better men and teaching them the necessary things to be successful in life.

When the coach refused to answer my question regarding how impressed his friends and family were that he got to be interviewed by me I turned the conversation to some of the challenges involved in recruiting for a school that is just launching football.

Coach Fagan felt there were four major challenges:

1. Getting the recruits to visualize what will be there in the way of facilities, equipment, etc.

2. Having been hired late (Feb.  12) finding kids that are the right fit; academically, athletically, spiritually

3. Educating administrators, faculty and staff on what it will take to get the program off the ground the right way

4. Convincing the recruits that red shirting is a good thing

I suggested that some recruiting difficulties might be overcome with a catchy slogan like “If you don’t mind havin’ a coach named Fagan, it’s a fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine life!” but Coach Fagan reminded me that that bit from Oliver! was the second reference my blog has made to musicals and took a man-card away from me.

When I asked the Coach if he anticipated travel problems since virtually no other NAIA schools in Florida sponsor intercollegiate football he seemed philosophical about the situation:

“We’ll fly once a year to the west coast,  either Menlo College(San Francisco), or Southern Oregon University, ” he stated, “There will be some long bus trips but that is the nature of sub Division I Football…The good thing is that there are many teams that want to travel to Naples, FL.  It is almost like a bowl game for them.  We do not always have to look at a home and home situation.  Some schools are willing to travel two years in a row to our school, especially in late October and early November because of the weather.”

I asked Coach Fagan to use one word to describe the experience of preparing for Ave Maria University’s first year of NAIA football  and he replied “An adventure.” When I pointed out that that was two words he just rolled his eyes and indicated we should start wrapping up the interview.

By this point I was on my fourth glass of bourbon (Coach Fagan abstained), so I went into “interview wind-down mode” and asked a few non-sports questions.

Coach Fagan confessed his greatest non-sports passion was his family and since I love discussing bad movies with just about everybody the conversation turned to the most ridiculously bad movie the Coach had ever seen. He felt it was The Last Dragon, an answer that broke the hearts of Taimak fans everywhere (both of them).

Since we were on the subject of movies I asked the coach what a movie version of the first year of Gyrenes football should be titled and he stated ““Baptism Under Fire” (The Story of Ave Maria University Football)”.

Sounds like an Oscar-winner to me! I’m sure Mark Cuban would love to be a backer to avoid being trumped (as it were) by Tony Stark again over the cultural buzz regarding Gyrenes football.

If you can spot the faces of all 16 previous Chief Justices Of The Supreme Court in this provisional artists’ rendering of the AMU football field you can win $7.00! For details click here:  http://www.amuathletics.com/football/news/33/417/

FROM THE BLUE HOSE TO THE BULLDOGS

Cumberland (TN) Bulldogs football coach Dewayne “Hey HEY Hey” Alexander announced the hiring of former Presbyterian College Blue Hose linebacker Ryan Anderson this week. Anderson will coach linebackers and serve as the football program’s recruiting coordinator.

Anderson graduated from Presbyterian College in August 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with minors in Physical Education and Athletic Coaching. He served as an intern with the Big South Conference during his senior year at Presbyterian.

Anderson joins Matthew Hickmann as part of the “July Gang” of hires for the Cumberland University Bulldogs.

Earlier this week the Bulldog staff denied rumors that they were hiring not Ryan Anderson but Hans Christian Anderson, the Danish author who passed away in 1875 but whose line-backing skills were legendary.
