Halloween Month is nearly over, so here are a species of Brazilian monsters I’d love to read more about.
THE SKY FISHERS – Who do these folk creatures from Brazil have to sleep with to get more well known? I’d love to read entire stories about them, not just a paragraph or two referring to these unique monsters who deserve to enter the Halloween tradition.
The lore surrounding the Sky Fishers sometimes depicts them as scaly, fish-like humanoids who live on or inside clouds and drop their fishing lines or nets down on hapless humans and yank them up into the sky to be devoured. It’s like karmic payback for the way humans abduct fish from the sea to be devoured.
The Sky Fishers get blamed when individuals or groups suddenly go missing and are never heard from again. Child victims are used to spice up the legends. Some traditions hold that these creatures only strike on nights of the full moon, or on no-moon nights.
You want bigger Sky Fishers? Brazil’s got you covered.
If you prefer stories that depict the monsters as enormous, disembodied mouths which suddenly appear in the sky and either reel their human prey up to them via fishing lines made of lightning. Alternately, the gigantic Sky Fishers have net-like webbing across their mouths and they lower them to the earth below to snag their victims.
After eating their human meals they spit out nothing but ashes.
The most extreme variation on Sky Fishers that I’ve come across are in stories which make them so huge that their gaping maws are formed by what people mistake for an odd alignment of stars in the sky. Astonished humans staring up into the nighttime sky at these enormous beasts make for easy meals.
