FORGOTTEN TELEVISION: THE BEST OF THE (SATURDAY EVENING) POST

THE BEST OF THE POST (1960-1961) – This anthology series ran for 26 half-hour episodes, all of them in color and all of them based on short stories published in the Saturday Evening Post. John Conte hosted.

STANDOUT EPISODES:

COMMAND aka CAVALRY COMMAND – In the post-Civil War American southwest a cavalry captain and his young lieutenant clash over issues of command. Meanwhile, a conflict with Native Americans rages. Starring Everett Sloane and Ben Cooper.

THE LITTLE TERROR – A little girl (Patty Ann Gerrity) learns she has the power to make things disappear by whispering the word “oogledeboo.” Though her grandfather (Charles Ruggles) tries to get her to stop using her power she still experiments with it. Hey, maybe the Twilight Zone‘s little kid who wishes people into the cornfield got his start this same way. Also with Robert Quarry himself.

THE MARRIAGE THAT COULDN’T SUCCEED – June Lockhart stars as a blind woman whose marriage to a miner faces various challenges. When he goes off to war and is Missing in Action, she refuses to lose faith that he is still alive. 

THE MURDERER – A preponderance of circumstantial evidence indicates that a farmer (Don Megowan) is guilty of murdering his wife. But is he really innocent? Also starring Phyllis Coates and Kathleen Case.

SUICIDE FLIGHT – The wife (Nancy Hadley) of a test pilot (Don DeFore) tries to adjust to the fact that her husband faces death on a regular basis. Karl Swenson and Edward Platt also star.

TREASURY AGENT – U.S. Treasury Agents work to bring down the infamous gangster Louis “Lepke” Buchalter (Joseph Mell), head of “Murder, Inc.” The cast also includes Richard Arlen, Michael Higgins and Bek Nelson.

FRONTIER CORRESPONDENT – Historical adventure with Jerome Cowan as newspaper publisher Horace “Go west, young man” Greeley and THE Martin Laundau as Jesse James. Other stars are Burt Douglas and Karl Swenson. 

BAND OF BROTHERS – Nancy Gates stars as a woman trying to help her battle-scarred Navy veteran fiance (John Agar) deal with his circumstances. Tige Andrews and Paul Fix co-star.

THE TRUMPET MAN – An experienced trumpet player (Buddy Ebsen) tries to mount a comeback on the back of a new tune he composed for his wife. Also with Jesse White, Barbara Lawrence and Star Trek‘s Stanley Adams.

MARTHA – After the death of her mother, an 11-year-old girl (Beverly Washburn) takes over all the household responsibilities. Jackie Coogan co-stars.

NO ENEMY – The daughter (Susan Oliver) of a Confederate Army Colonel falls in love with a Union Army officer. Also starring Burt Douglas, Henry Hull and Jack Grinnage from The Night Stalker series.

SIX MONTHS MORE TO LIVE – Charles Coburn stars as a scheming Englishman who devises a cunning plan to try avoiding a large inheritance tax. Melville Cooper and Jennifer Raine co-star.

OFF THE SET – A merciless show business father (VINCENT PRICE) pushes his child actress daughter to the breaking point. With Madge Meredith and Regis Toomey.

GROPER IN THE DARK – Hey, I don’t even want to grope ‘er in the light! Thank you! I’m here all week! Louise Fletcher plays a woman on trial for the murder of a wealthy physician. John Hoyt appears.

I’M NO HERO – A doctor (Dan O’Herlihy) is forced to give medical aid to one of the criminals who have broken into his home. Diane Brewster, Frank Gerstle and Joan Vohs also star.
