NCAA D-3 FINAL FOUR SET, PLUS HBCU SEMIFINALS

NCAA DIVISION THREE

FINAL FOUR: FIRST BERTH – The CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS played the UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS (TX) CELTS. The defenses ruled at first and come Halftime the score was knotted up at a mere 22-22. After the break, CNU managed enough separation to upset the Celts by a score of 63-59. Toa Hollenbeck led the Captains with his 25 points.

FINAL FOUR: SECOND BERTH – Up next, the TRINITY (CT) COLLEGE BANTAMS did battle with the TUFTS UNIVERSITY JUMBOS. The Bantams held a tight 29-27 edge at the Half. From there competition remained intense but Trinity College downed the Jumbos 69-66. Sixteen points from Henry Vetter led the way for the Bantams.   

FINAL FOUR: THIRD BERTH – This game pitted the UNIVERSITY OF MARY WASHINGTON EAGLES against the UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO MAROONS. The Eagles dominated the opening Half and led UC 49-35 at the midpoint. The Maroons mounted a rally from there but fell far short as UMW triumphed 81-73. The Eagles were led by Jay Randall and his 22 points. 

FINAL FOUR: LAST BERTH – And the EMORY UNIVERSITY EAGLES took on the ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TITANS. As Halftime arrived, the Eagles were on top 47-43. After the break Emory managed a bit more separation from the Titans to win the game 83-78 led by 23 points from Jair Knight.

HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

FIRST SEMIFINAL – The CIAA’s BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES faced the SIAC’s CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS. This game saw two wildly different Halves. The Marauders built an odd 27-16 lead over their opponents by the midpoint. From there the Big Blues roared back, forcing OT with a 46-46 tie. The 1st Overtime ended at 54-54, but in DOUBLE OVERTIME, BSU won 67-60. Kyree Smith’s 18 points led the Big Blues.

SECOND SEMIFINAL – The VIRGINIA STATE TROJANS from the CIAA battled the EDWARD WATERS UNIVERSITY TIGERS from the SIAC. The Tigers were on top of Virginia State 34-30 as Halftime arrived. After the break the Trojans outscored Edward Waters 45-27 for a 75-61 triumph. Jacob Cooper tossed in 22 points to lead Virginia State.
