MARCH NINTH: ANNIVERSARY OF THE POLIO VACCINE

On March 9th, 1953 Dr. Jonas Salk announced his successful vaccine against poliomyelitis, the virus that causes polio.

Just the previous year, polio had 58,000 new victims and left 3,000 dead.

The positive impact of Salk’s vaccine cannot be overstated. Generations have come and gone since then with one less horrific disease hanging over their heads.

Here’s a salute to Dr. Salk on this 73rd anniversary of his announcement.

    Interesting post.

  3. Well done, Dr. Salk! My Grandmother’s two sister’s suffered from long-term effects of polio, which I was told was pretty devastating!

  4. Thank you! Those individuals are treasures in our history.
