Here at Frontierado international headquarters things are as hectic as you would imagine with the Frontierado holiday coming up on Friday, August 1st. These are my best bourbons for your celebrations this year, with a new brand in the top spot. (I’m not affiliated with any of these brands.)
SMOKEYE HILL – Making its debut on the Bourbon Breakdown for Frontierado is this Colorado-aged bourbon which meets my usual standard of letting you blow flies out of the air after taking a swig.
I prefer Barrel Strength at ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-TWO PROOF. Yes, 66% alcohol.
This whiskey is distilled from a four-grain mashbill of blue corn, yellow corn, rye and malted barley.
Tasting Notes: Crème brûlée, vanilla, tobacco, and oak on the nose. The palate is rich with brown sugar, honey, leather, and caramel.

LARCENY BOURBON – Making its debut on the Bourbon Breakdown for Frontierado is this Kentucky Bourbon which meets my usual standard of letting you blow flies out of the air after a swig.
I prefer Barrel Strength at ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-THREE POINT TWO PROOF (123.2 proof).
This whiskey is distilled from 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley. For the next 6-8 years it ages in barrels made from charred American Oak. You can drink it straight or as a mix for your Cactus Jacks.
IRON SMOKE BOURBON – Hunker down with some Iron Smoke Bourbon to help you and yours celebrate Frontierado.
The people at Iron Smoke amusingly call their cask strength bourbon “Casket Strength.” It’s ONE-HUNDRED TWENTY PROOF, making it one of the most potent potables on this list. This bourbon goes with any celebration.
Remember, to be a Frontierado Whiskey it’s got to have incomparable taste PLUS be strong enough to meet the aforementioned standard of letting you blow flies out of the air right after you take a drink.
DEVILS RIVER BOURBON – Here’s one of the brands of whiskey that I like to drink either straight or mixed in my Cactus Jacks: Devils River (1840).
This Texas Bourbon is created with water drawn from Devils River (Devils is plural, so no apostrophe) and is 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley.
As usual I prefer their Barrel Strength, ranging from 117 proof plus or minus, but naturally you’re free to make your own selections regarding potency.
HORSE SOLDIER BOURBON – The distillers of this whiskey are U.S. veterans.
Horse Soldier Signature Barrel Strength has flavors of caramel, honey, butterscotch, woodiness, cashew and spiced raisin with just a hint of toffee. It carries with it aromas of honey, apples, citrus, toffee and leather.
Needless to say, if Barrel Strength is too much for you, they have other proof levels.
I haven’t touched a drop for many years but I was partial to bourbon back in the day.
I understand. Bourbon is still my go-to drink.
