BALLADEER’S BLOG: NAIA, NCCAA AND USCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT ACTION

NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) DIVISION TWO

FIRST QUARTERFINAL – The 4 seeds – the CROWN COLLEGE POLARS – faced the 5th seeded GRACE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS. GCU was on top of the Polars 39-33 by Halftime, but Crown College came out of the locker room ready for a comeback. In the end the Polars triumphed 74-69 led by 24 points from Tyrus Buckner.

SECOND QUARTERFINAL – The 3rd seeded MANHATTAN CHRISTIAN COLLEGE THUNDER took the court against the 6 seeds – the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY AT HARRODSBURG PIONEERS. At the Half the score was knotted up 38-38. From there the Thunder squeezed out a little separation from the Pioneers for a 72-69 victory. Xavier Lucas led MCC with 20 points. 

THIRD QUARTERFINAL – In this game the 2 seeds – the SPURGEON COLLEGE KNIGHTS – got almost more than they could handle from the 7th seeded BOB JONES UNIVERSITY BRUINS. By the midpoint of this shootout the Bruins were up 56-50 but the Knights roared back to win 99-97. Jack Chamberlin’s Double Double of 25 points and 13 rebounds led Spurgeon College. 

FOURTH QUARTERFINAL – The top seeded NORTH CENTRAL UNIVERSITY RAMS did battle with the 8 seeds – the CHAMPION CHRISTIAN COLLEGE TIGERS. The Rams held a 43-38 lead come Halftime. After the break NCU exploded offensively, crushing the Tigers by a Century Club score of 105-68. Twenty-five points from Carrington McNeal led the Rams to victory.

USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) DIVISION ONE

FIRST SEMIFINAL – The 4 seeds – the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (Shipbuilders) – took on the Cinderella 8th seeded BERKELEY COLLEGE (NY) KNIGHTS. Midnight tolled for BC as the Builders parlayed a 47-38 advantage at the Half into a Century Club level 100-83 triumph. Adrion Wall led the Apprentice School with THIRTY-ONE points. 

SECOND SEMIFINAL – The 3rd seeded VILLA MARIA COLLEGE VIKINGS played the 2 seeds – the LYON COLLEGE SCOTS. This game was a Defensive Epic as Halftime found the Scots clinging to a mere 26-25 edge. From there the Vikings came back to win 60-52. Bryan Adams tossed in 22 points to lead VMC while teammate Nolan Shephard had a Double Double of 15 points & 10 rebounds.

USCAA DIVISION TWO

SEMIFINAL ONE – The 3 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI AT HAMILTON HARRIERS – clashed with the 2nd seeded UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI AT CLERMONT COUGARS. The Cougars were up 34-25 at the Half, but after the break the Harriers outscored UCC 55-31 for an 80-65 triumph. UM-Hamilton was led by Cory Davis with his Double Double of 22 points & 11 rebounds. 

SEMIFINAL TWO – Two teams in the Penn State system fought it out in this game. The 5th seeded PSU-SCHUYKILL LIONS faced the top seeds – the PSU-MONT ALTO LIONS. Suffocating defense was the tale as Schuykill put Mont Alto on Upset Alert with a 26-12 Halftime lead, then put them away 54-39. Issac Lane’s 23 points led PSUS while fellow Lion Dashawn Dixon logged a Double Double of 14 points & 10 rebounds. 

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

ROUND ONE: CALDWELL – The COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES took on the FRIENDS UNIVERSITY FALCONS to win this section. The Coyotes, who knocked out UC-Merced, led Friends University, who knocked out Florida Memorial, 41-22 at the break. From there College of Idaho put away the Falcons 75-65 led by 17 points from Johnny Radford.

ROUND ONE: LANGSTON – This game pitted the LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS against the CENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE MUSTANGS. The Lions, who eliminated St. Mary (KS), led the Mustangs, who eliminated William Carey, 41-39 at Halftime. After the break Langston triumphed 81-76 in Overtime led by Kamron Brice’s 21 points.

ROUND ONE: HUNTINGTON – The NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS faced the HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY FORESTERS. The Red Raiders, who bounced Graceland, were up 48-29 at Halftime over the Foresters, who had bounced Lourdes. Northwestern College won 80-66 led by 17 points from Alex Van Kalsbeek.

ROUND ONE: GEORGETOWN – For this section the GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS and the UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS did battle. The Tigers, who beat LSU-Shreveport, had a 34-32 edge at the Half over the Cougars, who beat Lewis-Clark State. Georgetown College advanced 83-64 led by Dre Boyd’s Double Double of 23 points & 11 rebounds.

ROUND ONE: GLENDALE – The ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM played the OREGON TECH HUSTLIN’ OWLS. The Firestorm, who defeated Westcliff, led the Hustlin’ Owls, who defeated Indiana Tech, 34-24 at Halftime. Arizona Christian University went on to win 83-52 with 21 points from Ese Onakpoma leading the way.

ROUND ONE: WILLIAMSBURG – The UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS faced the UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE RAMS here. The Patriots, who downed Milligan, were up 41-40 at Halftime over the Rams, who downed IU-Northwest. The University of the Cumberlands won out 93-77 led by 26 points from Anthony Johnson.

ROUND ONE: DALTON – The ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS COLLEGE POMEROYS took on the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES. The Pomeroys, who eliminated Dalton State, led the Gyrenes, who eliminated Xavier (LA) 47-40 at the Half. From there SMWC won the game 89-81. FORTY-THREE points from Greg Jenkins led the Pomeroys, while teammate Shon Tupuola notched a Double Double of 18 points & 20 rebounds.

ROUND ONE: WINONA LAKE – The GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS clashed with the UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS. The Lancers, who bounced Carolina, were up 32-31 at Halftime over the Bears, who bounced St. Francis (IL). After the break, Grace College pulled away for a 75-67 victory. The Lancers were led by Ian Scott with his Double Double of 18 points & 10 rebounds.

ROUND ONE: HENDERSON – Up next the FREED-HARDEMAN UNIVERSITY LIONS fought the SPRING ARBOR UNIVERSITY COUGARS. The Cougars, who downed Cornerstone, led the Lions, who downed IU-Southeast, 41-33 midway through. Freed-Hardeman U. won 71-69 with Jordan Stephens putting up 20 points to lead the way.

ROUND ONE: MARION – The LIFE UNIVERSITY RUNNING EAGLES collided with the INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS. The Running Eagles, who beat Johnson, were up 37-31 at Halftime over the Wildcats, who beat Madonna. From there Life University (not affiliated with the School of Hard Knocks) triumphed 88-74. The Running Eagles were led by 25 points from Chaze Harris.

ROUND ONE: SANTA CLARITA – In this game the SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (should be Sea Gulls) played THE MASTER’S UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS. The Mustangs, who eliminated Dakota Wesleyan, led the Raiders, who eliminated Montana Tech, 32-28 at the Half. Southern Oregon came back to win 76-71 led by Bryce Dyer with 19 points. 

ROUND ONE: WEST PALM BEACH – The KEISER UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS fought the WILLIAM WOODS UNIVERSITY OWLS. The Seahawks, who knocked out Faulkner, were on top 39-37 at Halftime over the Owls, who knocked out Dillard. Keiser University got a 78-72 victory. Tyreon Payne led the Seahawks with 25 points, and teammate Vincent Miszkiewicz had a Double Double of 10 points & 13 rebounds. 

ROUND ONE: ALEXANDRIA – The LSU-ALEXANDRIA GENERALS did battle with the NELSON UNIVERSITY (formerly SAGU) LIONS. The Generals, who beat Stillman, led the Lions, who beat Middle Georgia State, 42-33 at the break. From there, LSU-Alexandria went on to win 77-65 led by Kashie Natt who tossed in 21 points.

ROUND ONE: MISHAWAKA – The BETHEL (IN) PILOTS (Riverboat Pilots), who defeated Peru State, faced the MORNINGSIDE UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS, who defeated Hope International. The Pilots were out in front 43-39 come Halftime, then pulled away for a 93-84 triumph. Jameir Jefferson led Bethel U. with 23 points, while fellow Pilot Preston Phillips notched a Double Double of 12 points & 13 rebounds.

ROUND ONE: BALDWIN CITY – The BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS found themselves up against the CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS. Baker University, who bounced Texas Wesleyan, were up 48-26 at the Half over the Bulldogs, who bounced Bethel (KS). The Wildcats kept the Bulldogs at arm’s length to win the game 80-65 led by 16 points from Ahmed Mahgoub.

ROUND ONE: SIOUX CENTER – The OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY EAGLES, who eliminated Mid-America Christian, played the DORDT UNIVERSITY DEFENDERS, who eliminated Dickinson State. The Eagles led the Defenders 39-37 by the midpoint. Each team scored 36 points from there as Oklahoma Wesleyan held on 75-73. Derrick Talton Jr. led the Eagles with 24 points and teammate Nick Bene had a Double Double of 19 points & 10 rebounds.
