FMU CONQUERS D2 – Each year various teams topple opponents who play in higher divisions. Yesterday the NAIA’s FLORIDA MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY LIONS welcomed the EDWARD WATERS UNIVERSITY TIGERS from NCAA Division Two. The Lions led EWU 10-0, 17-0 and 24-14 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters, respectively. In the 4th FMU won 31-21.

SEAHAWKS CONQUER D2 – Also from the NAIA, the KEISER UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS traveled to face the NCAA Division Two NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY TRAILBLAZERS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 14-10 Seahawks edge by Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended with KU up 17-13 before the Trailblazers forced OT with a 20-20 deadlock in the 4th. The Seahawks won 23-20 in Overtime.

FIGHTING SCOTS CONQUER DIVISION ONE – This game pitted D2’s EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FIGHTING SCOTS against their hosts the Division 1 ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY COLONIALS. The opening Half ended in a 14-14 tie before the Fighting Scots went up 21-14 in the 3rd Quarter. The 4th saw Edinboro U. squeeze out a 23-21 victory.

DOWN GOES NUMBER SEVEN – Down in NCAA Division Three the 17th ranked UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT FALL RIVER FALCONS visited the number 7 team in D3 – the ALMA COLLEGE SCOTS. The Falcons led 13-7 in the 1st Quarter and 27-7 at Halftime. After the break, the Scots outscored UW-Fall River 28-14 but the Falcons still prevailed 41-35.

AND NUMBER NINE CAME TUMBLING AFTER – Staying in D3 for a moment, the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT OSHKOSH TITANS played host to the 9th ranked WHEATON COLLEGE THUNDER. A scoreless opening Quarter was followed by a 13-7 Titans lead by the midpoint. Going into the 4th, the Thunder went up 14-13, only for a ballsy 2-point PAT for Oshkosh to give them a 21-14 win.

KNOCKING OFF NUMBER ONE – In the NJCAA, the 2nd ranked HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS traveled to play the number 1 team in the nation – the IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS. This fight to the finish saw the Blue Dragons on top 31-21 at Halftime. Neither team scored in the 3rd Quarter and in the 4th a Reivers rally fell just short as Hutchinson College won 38-37.

MARATHON GAME OF THE WEEK – Back up in NCAA Division Two, the MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES welcomed the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS yesterday. The Hardrockers led 21-7 by the Half, but the Huskies made the game a 35-35 deadlock to end the 4th. It took FOUR OVERTIMES before Michigan Tech emerged with a 52-50 win off a Safety.

BUILDING A BLOWOUT – The NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (Shipbuilders) took the field against the visiting SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS (should be Danites). The Builders extended their 7-0 1st Quarter lead to 24-9 at the Half. From there the Apprentice School kept up the pressure to crush the Knights 44-9. 

Gettysburg Bullets helmetONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – In this D3 game the GETTYSBURG COLLEGE BULLETS took it on the road against the JUNIATA COLLEGE EAGLES. The Bullets parlayed their 34-27 Halftime lead into a 41-34 advantage in the 3rd Quarter. Gettysburg College owned the 4th Quarter, adding 20 more points for a 61-41 triumph.

Texas College SteersSTEERS OFF TO A 2-0 START – Back up in the NAIA the TEXAS COLLEGE STEERS have surprised many by starting the 2024 season at 2-0. Yesterday they hosted the WESTGATE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY RAVENS. The Steers grabbed a quick 7-0 1st Quarter lead and never looked back, ultimately crushing the Ravens by a final tally of 54-3.

NAIA VS NCAA DIVISION THREE

NAIA OVER D3 – The BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS doubled-up on their D3 guests the UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR CRUSADERS 20-10   ###   Meanwhile the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS won 24-14 at the AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY AUGGIES   ###   And the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS logged a 41-25 road win over the NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRAIRIE WOLVES.

pacific lutheran lutes helmetD3 OVER NAIA – NCAA Division Three only won one of these games this week. The PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY LUTES visited the NAIA’s SIMPSON UNIVERSITY RED HAWKS, who are in their first ever season of intercollegiate football. The Lutes shut out their opponents while acquiring points every Quarter, ultimately winning the game 43-0.

Texas Wesleyan U Rams NEWNUMBER SIXTEEN FALLS – The TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY RAMS visited the 16th ranked OTTAWA UNIVERSITY (AZ) SPIRIT. The Rams seemed in charge as they led the game 21-10 at the break, then extended that to a 28-13 advantage to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th the Spirit exploded for 20 points but fell just short as Texas Wesleyan held on to win 35-33.

ONE-POINT WONDERS – The (18) REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be Rottweilers) eked out a 22-21 victory over their hosts the FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Fury)    ###    And in the game between the JUDSON UNIVERSITY EAGLES and the visiting MADONNA UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS, Judson prevailed in a 28-27 nail-biter. 

DAKOTA RAILROAD RIVALRY – This game pitted the MOUNT MARTY UNIVERSITY LANCERS against the home standing DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Blue Tigers). The Lancers led 7-0 in the 1st Quarter, but the Tigers went on top 10-7 come Halftime. Neither team scored in the 3rd, and Mount Marty ended the game with a 24-17 win.

ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – In this category for this week, the (23) MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS eviscerated their hosts the CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS 69-7    ###    And the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS won 70-14 at the WALDORF UNIVERSITY WARRIORS.

Montana Tech Orediggers brand newGRIDIRON GRUDGE MATCH – The (21) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS found themselves on the road against the CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS. The Orediggers led 16-7, 23-7 and 30-7 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters, respectively. In the 4th, Montana Tech held on against a furious Fighting Saints rally for a 30-22 victory.

NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association)

ANN ARBOR’S FERRY FIELD – The storied CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS welcomed the DEFIANCE COLLEGE HORNETS to their equally storied field on Saturday. The Cardinals led the Hornets 17-0 at Halftime, then added another 17 points after the break to win the game by a final tally of 34-10.

Taylor TrojansWORKING OVERTIME – The TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS traveled to face the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Purple Tigers). A 14-14 1st Quarter tie turned into a 34-28 Trojans edge at the midpoint. ONU forced OT with a 51-51 tie to end Regulation. In the extra session Taylor University won out 58-51.

BEATDOWN – This game saw the WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS (should be Flying Ws) visit the NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY STALLIONS. The Pioneers grabbed a 14-0 lead in the opening Quarter and never looked back from there. In the end Wayland Baptist absolutely clobbered the Stallions to the tune of 41-6.

Greenville College PanthersHOME AND AWAY – The home standing GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY PANTHERS wound up hammering the visiting CONCORDIA-CHICAGO COUGARS by a final tally of 54-23    ###    And on the “away” side of this entry, the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS traveled to play the WEBBER INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY WARRIORS and routed them 28-10.

Livingstone_OLD2SAFETY FIRST – In this game the LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE BLUE BEARS welcomed the VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY OF LYNCHBURG DRAGONS. The Dragons scored an early Safety but by Halftime the Blue Bears led 16-2. From there VUL scored 7 more points to the 14 scored by Livingstone College as the Blue Bears won out 30-9. 

NCAA DIVISION TWO

UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – There was only one Upset in the D2 Top 25 yesterday and that came in the game between the COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES and their guests the 15th ranked UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT THE PERMIAN BASIN FALCONS. The Thunder Wolves had their way with UTPB and trounced them 29-9. 

BATTLES OF COOL NAMED TEAMS – The NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY TIMBERWOLVES doubled up on the home standing GANNON UNIVERSITY GOLDEN KNIGHTS 28-14   ###   Elsewhere, the SOUTHERN ARKANSAS UNIVERSITY MULERIDERS won a 36-31 squeaker at the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM   ###   And the (2) UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES annihilated the NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS 63-21.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSIC – In this game the ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS welcomed the OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON. It was 10-10 in the 1st Quarter and 31-24 in favor of the Wonderboys at Halftime. The Bison made it a 41-41 tie to end the 4th, with Arkansas Tech winning in OT 44-41.

bluefield state new helmetROAD WARRIORS – The BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES took it on the road against the CONCORD UNIVERSITY MOUNTAIN LIONS and defeated them 22-13   ###   Meanwhile, the UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY OILERS won 37-21 at the TRUMAN STATE BULLDOGS   ###   And the (3) PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS crushed the MISSOURI-SOUTHERN LIONS 42-17. 

Nebraska-KearneyLOPING TO VICTORY – The UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT KEARNEY LOPERS played the visiting NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS. The Bearcats were on top 14-7 in the 1st Quarter, but the Lopers knotted things up at 14-14 by Halftime. In the 2nd Half UN-Kearney scored the only points, winning the game 21-14.

NCAA DIVISION THREE

ADDITIONAL UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – Aside from the two Top Ten Upsets from D3 in the Headlines above the division’s only other surprise came in the game between the TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS and the 13th ranked TRINITY (TX) TIGERS. When all was said and done the Bulldogs had managed a 35-20 victory.

WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A BASEBALL GAME BROKE OUT – The MCDANIEL COLLEGE GREEN TERROR won a 7-3 defensive classic over the CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY CARDINALS   ###   Next the HOBART UNIVERSITY STATESMEN defeated the visiting ALFRED UNIVERSITY SAXONS 10-7   ###   And the KNOX COLLEGE PRAIRIE FIRE won 7-6 over the EUREKA COLLEGE RED DEVILS.

A DOUBLE SHOT OF THAT OT LOVE – The WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY BEARCATS played host to the UNIVERSITY OF LA VERNE LEOPARDS yesterday. Come Halftime the Leopards were on top 17-14, but the Bearcats forced Overtime with a 24-24 deadlock. Neither team scored in the 1st OT but in the 2nd Willamette pulled out a 27-24 triumph.

Heidelberg Student PrincesALL NAME GAMES – The HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY STUDENT PRINCES roughed up their guests the HIRAM COLLEGE TERRIERS 38-14   ###   The FRANKLIN & MARSHALL COLLEGE DIPLOMATS tripled up on the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN 30-10   ###   And the ALBION COLLEGE BRITONS won 31-23 over the WISCONSIN-STEVENS POINT POINTERS 

Millsaps MajorsTHE RIVERSIDE RUMBLE – The MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS took the field against the visiting BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY BLAZERS. A 14-10 Blazers edge at the Half turned into a 17-14 advantage for Millsaps College in the 3rd Quarter. The Majors held on in the 4th to win this year’s Riverside Rumble 23-21.  

NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association)

DOWN GOES NUMBER EIGHT – The 13th ranked HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES took it on the road against the NJCAA’s number 8 team in the nation – the IOWA CENTRAL COLLEGE TRITONS. This went down as one of the tightest games of the day, with the Scotties ultimately eking out a 14-13 victory over the Tritons.

ROAD RAGE – The COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS visited the CISCO COLLEGE WRANGLERS and handed them a 37-19 defeat   ###   Meanwhile the NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE BRONCOS (should be Cavalry) pounded their hosts the UTAH ISLANDERS 40-18   ###   And the GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS won 38-9 at the (15) DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES – The VERMILION COLLEGE IRON HAWKS (formerly the Ironmen) hosted the MESABI RANGE COLLEGE NORSE in this game. By the time the midpoint arrived the Iron Hawks were on top 18-0, but from there they had to hold on by their fingertips against a furious Norse rally. Vermilion College won 18-16.

Blinn College buccaneersHAPPY HOME STANDS – The BLINN COLLEGE BUCCANEERS welcomed the T.W. ANDREWS PREP RED RAIDERS and smothered them 45-0   ###   Elsewhere, the CENTRAL GEORGIA TECHNICAL COLLEGE TITANS won 28-7 against their guests the PALMETTO COLLEGIATE BANDITS   ###   And the ANDREW COLLEGE TIGERS shut out the SOUTH CAROLINA CENTRAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE GLADIATORS 30-0.

Monroe College Mustangs helmetTHREE OUT OF FOUR – This game pitted the MONROE COLLEGE MUSTANGS against the visiting SUSSEX COUNTY COLLEGE SKYLANDERS. The opening Quarter saw the Skylanders leading 6-0, but the Mustangs took over for the remaining 3 Quarters. In the end the final count was Monroe College 21  Sussex County College 6.

CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association)

NAIL-BITER – This was a terrific game between the 8th ranked GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS and the home standing number 17 BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 17-13 Rustlers edge at Halftime. The Renegades outscored Golden West College 12-10 after the break, but the Rustlers triumphed 27-25.

SHUTOUTS – The number 12 SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE OLYMPIANS welcomed the SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES and eviscerated them by a final score of SIXTY-FIVE to NOTHING    ###    And the 5th ranked FULLERTON COLLEGE HORNETS manhandled the CITY COLLEGE OF SANTA BARBARA VAQUEROS 38-0 in their own house.

ONE-POINT WONDER – This game between the MOORPARK COLLEGE RAIDERS and their hosts the (24) PALOMAR COLLEGE COMETS was a tight affair. Well, at least by the end it was. The Comets led 10-3 at the Half and 13-3 to end the 3rd Quarter. The 4th saw the Raiders come roaring from behind for a 17-16 win.

San Mateo BulldogsCLOSE CALL FOR NUMBER TWO – The 2nd ranked COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO BULLDOGS got almost more than they could handle against the home standing SIERRA COLLEGE WOLVERINES. A 7-0 1st Quarter lead for the Bulldogs became 19-10 by Halftime. The Wolverines made it 19-13 going into the 4th Quarter, when San Mateo won the game 27-26.

Pierce CollegeROAD WINS – The PIERCE COLLEGE BRAHMAS (as in Brahma Bulls) won 27-7 at the COMPTON COLLEGE TARTARS on Saturday   ###   Next, the PASADENA CITY COLLEGE LANCERS defeated the home standing SANTA ANA COLLEGE DONS 45-28   ###   And the (3) MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES logged a 38-21 victory at the MOUNT SAN JACINTO COLLEGE EAGLES.

  3. Well I’m glad SOMEONES worthy won. Just wasn’t Notre Dame. I’m in mourning.

  4. Very good article. I really like Iowa, and Iowa State. I don’t live in Iowa, but I have heard it said that “Iowa is a small town.” LOL Very comfortable. I have been to Des Moines and Fort Dodge; both were very nice cities. Also, I like the movies that show Iowa as their town areas, “The Music Man,” and “The Great America Smoke Out,” and maybe others.
