BALLADEER’S BLOG: NAIA COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL TOURNAMENT ROUND ONE

Mid-America Christian University EvangelsWICHITA SITE – The 10 seeds – the MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EVANGELS – faced the 7th seeded HASTINGS COLLEGE BRONCOS.

The opening Half was a defensive epic and ended with the Evangels up 28-27. After the break each team added another 40 points to their tally, with Mid-America Christian University edging the Broncos 68-67. Seth Hurd and Mikel Henderson led the Evangels with 16 points each.

university of tennessee southern firehawksMARION SITE – This game pitted the 7th seeded TENNESSEE SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY FIREHAWKS against the 10 seeds – the TOUGALOO COLLEGE BULLDOGS. 

The Firehawks held a comfortable 45-28 lead at Halftime. The Bulldogs mounted a fierce rally from there, but still fell short as Tennessee Southern U. triumphed by a final score of 91-84. Eighteen points from Mark Vance led the Firehawks.

madonna crusaders logoLIVONIA SITE – The 5 seeds – the MADONNA UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS – did battle with the 12th seeded DORDT UNIVERSITY DEFENDERS.

By the midpoint of the game the Defenders were on top 45-42, but the Crusaders came out of the locker room ready for a comeback. Madonna U. outscored Dordt 35-27 to win the game 77-72. Brendan Young led the Crusaders with his Double Double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. His teammates Isaac Anderson and Matthew MacLellan logged Double Doubles of 16 points & 11 rebounds, and 16 points & 10 rebounds respectively.   

central baptist college mustangsOLATHE SITE – In this game the 14th seeded CENTRAL BAPTIST COLLEGE MUSTANGS clashed with the 11 seeds – the BETHEL (IN) UNIVERSITY PILOTS.

This was a tale of two Halves. The Mustangs were in the lead 48-39 at the break, but then had to hold on tight against a Pilots rally for a 79-76 victory. Deshawn Corprew tossed in 18 points to lead Central Baptist College. 

ave maria university gyrenesLANGSTON SITE – The 9 seeds – the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES – took the court against the 8th seeded SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS.

The Moundbuilders held a 42-40 edge at Halftime. From there the Gyrenes came from behind to defeat Southwestern College by a final count of 97-92. Nick Filchner’s THIRTY-ONE points led Ave Maria University while his fellow Gyrene Michael Klekas got a Double Double of 20 points and 16 rebounds.

LSU Shreveport Pilots NEWSALINA SITE – This 5 seed vs 12 seed game saw the (12) LSU-SHREVEPORT PILOTS (riverboat pilots) tangle with the (5) KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES.   

By the Half the Coyotes were out in front 38-28 but the Pilots forced Overtime with a 79-79 tie to end Regulation. In the extra session LSU-Shreveport emerged with a 95-89 win. The Pilots were led by Melvion Flanagan with 19 points.   

arizona christian university firestormGLENDALE SITE – The 3rd seeded ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM played the 11 seeds – the HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY FORESTERS.

The Foresters were threatening an Upset at Halftime with a 39-35 lead. After the break the Firestorm righted things and came roaring back for a 73-69 triumph. Sixteen points from ACU’s Paul Hayden led the victors. 

grace college lancers gWINONA LAKE SITE – In this game one of the 1 seeds – the GRACE COLLEGE LANCERS – were up against the 16th seeded WASHINGTON ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY SHOCK.

A 36-31 Halftime advantage for the Shock was pretty handily obliterated by the Lancers. They outscored Washington Adventist University 54-29 in the 2nd Half for a comfortable 86-65 win. Elijah Malone led the Lancers with a Double Double of 25 points and 11 rebounds, while his teammate Ian Scott notched a Double Double of his own with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
