In a college sports landscape littered with teams called Eagles, Tigers, Bulldogs and Wildcats, Balladeer’s Blog takes a look at another college with a cool team name.
WILLISTON STATE COLLEGE
Team Name: TETONS
Location: Williston, ND
Division: NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association)
Comment: The Tetons were the largest and westernmost tribe of the Sioux and were often called the Teton Dakota or Teton Sioux. There is also the Teton Range of mountains out west.
Williston State used to be a hockey power but sadly the institution discontinued that sport a while back. The good news is that the Tetons still play sports like basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball.

Great point Charlee, but the best hockey players entering college in the Dakotas and parts of Minnesota would get snapped up by the Division One hockey team at the University of North Dakota, so it was getting harder and harder to put together a quality team. Throw in all the expenses for equipment that hockey requires and Williston State ultimately decided to cut the sport.
I like these cool names, long may they remain. I was wondering is there any pressure on Williston and other schools to change names, in the wake of the Cleveland baseball and Washington football teams?
Well, the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux were hassled for years and finally gave in and changed their name. As far as I know, since Tetons can also refer to the Grand Tetons mountains, Williston State has not yet come under attack. At least not yet.
