VICTORY BOWL – This season-ending showcase game in the NCCAA pitted the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS against the SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS. By Halftime the Tigers were on top 21-3 and the Lions cut that to 21-10 to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th, Olivet Nazarene won the game by a final score of 21-16.
NEPTUNE BOWL – This Bowl game features the USCAA facing NCAA Division 3. From the USCAA the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (think Shipbuilders) played D3’s BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE EAGLES. After a scoreless 1st Quarter, the Builders had a 14-7 lead at the Half. That became 21-7 in the 3rd Quarter before an explosive 4th saw NNAS log a 38-28 victory.
NAIA PLAYOFFS – FIRST ROUND
GAME ONE – The LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS took on the REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Rottweilers). It was all defense in the 1st Half, leaving the Blue Raiders with a mere 3-0 edge at the midpoint. After the break Lindsey Wilson College put up 20 points to Reinhardt U’s 22 to win out 23-22.
GAME TWO – The GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS clashed with the CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS. As in Game One, 3-0 was the Halftime tally with the Vikings on top of the Fighting Saints. That turned into a 17-7 lead in the 3rd Quarter and ultimately a 17-14 GVU victory.
GAME THREE – In this game the INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS took the field against the AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES (formerly the Avalanche). The Wildcats led 7-0 in the 1st Quarter and 14-7 at the break. The 2nd Half was all defense, so 14-7 was the final count as well.
GAME FOUR – The KEISER UNIVERSITY SEAHAWKS traveled to face the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS in this contest. A 7-7 opening Quarter tie became a 17-7 Wildcats advantage by Halftime. After a scoreless 3rd Quarter, the Seahawks exploded for 20 points in the 4th, winning the game 27-17.
GAME FIVE – The defending National Champions, the MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS, went up against the ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM. The Mustangs seized a quick 21-0 lead in the 1st Quarter and from there they had coasted to a 35-18 triumph over the Firestorm.
GAME SIX – Up next the BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS played the SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS. The Ravens kept the Moundbuilders off the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter while piling up points for themselves. The final tally was Benedictine College 35 Southwestern College 7.
GAME SEVEN – The MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS mixed it up with the SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS. The storied Knights dominated this game on both sides of the ball from start to finish. In the end Marian University moved on to the Quarterfinals with a 41-7 blowout.
GAME EIGHT – Closing out Round One was this battle between the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS and the DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS. The Red Raiders parlayed a 21-0 1st Quarter lead into a 35-7 advantage at Halftime. After the break Northwestern College coasted to a 49-7 victory.
NCAA DIVISION TWO PLAYOFFS OPENING ROUND
GAME ONE – The SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY ROCK visited the ASSUMPTION UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS. The Rock put the Greyhounds on Upset Alert by the Half with a 17-7 lead. Assumption University cut that to 17-14 in the 3rd Quarter, with neither team scoring in the 4th, making 17-14 the final score.
GAME TWO – The NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS were on the road against the OUACHITA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY TIGERS. The Bearcats surprised the nation with their manhandling of the previously undefeated Tigers. When all was said and done, Northwest Missouri State won the game 47-17.
GAME THREE – A gridiron battle between the MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS and the WAYNE STATE (NE) WILDCATS came next. Come Halftime the score was knotted up 3-3. The Mavericks went out in front 19-3 in the 3rd Quarter, which was followed by a 26-9 Minnesota State victory.
GAME FOUR – The COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES OREDIGGERS took the field against the COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES. The Orediggers led 14-3, 24-10 and 38-17 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters, respectively. The final count was Colorado School of Mines 45 Thunder Wolves 24.
GAME FIVE – The BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS played the WINONA STATE WARRIORS in this game. This was a tale of 2 Halves, with neither team scoring at all in the opening Half. After the break, points flew like shrapnel as the Beavers went on to defeat the Warriors 31-7.
GAME SIX – The UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS entertained the LIMESTONE UNIVERSITY SAINTS. A 24-6 Argonauts advantage by Halftime was expanded in the 2nd Half, with the game ultimately ending in a 45-19 triumph for the University of West Florida.
GAME SEVEN – This game pitted the PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS against the UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS. The Gorillas were able to achieve defensive perfection in the contest, shutting out the Greyhounds while they piled on points as the game rolled on. Pittsburg State won by a final score of 35-0.
GAME EIGHT – Another Shutout was up next as the DELTA STATE STATESMEN dominated the FAYETTEVILLE STATE BRONCOS. The Statesmen went on top 21-0 in the 1st Quarter and never looked back from there. When it was all over Delta State had notched a 51-0 smackdown.
NCAA DIVISION THREE OPENING ROUND
TWO-POINT WONDER – The BETHEL (MN) ROYALS took it on the road against the WHEATON COLLEGE THUNDER. A tight 14-12 Royals edge come Halftime became 28-19 in the 3rd Quarter. The 4th ended in a 34-32 victory for Bethel University.
FEELING THE PRIDE – In this game the SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE PRIDE visited the forever overrated ENDICOTT COLLEGE GULLS. A 7-0 1st Quarter lead for the Pride remained unchanged at the Half. After the break Springfield College held off the favored Gulls to win out 17-14.
GO TELL THE SPARTANS – The AURORA UNIVERSITY SPARTANS faced the home standing UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT WHITEWATER WARHAWKS. After a 7-7 opening Quarter tie, the Spartans went up 21-14 by Halftime. In the 2nd Half, the Warhawks outscored Aurora University 14-12 but still fell short in a 33-28 Spartans win.
TRAILBLAZING – The UTICA COLLEGE PIONEERS were on the road against the SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY RIVERHAWKS. A 3-3 deadlock at the midpoint turned into a 10-3 Pioneers advantage to end the 3rd quarter. The teams exchanged Touchdowns in the 4th as Utica College won the game 17-10.
DEFENSIVE DUELS – The WARTBURG COLLEGE KNIGHTS defeated the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT LACROSSE EAGLES 14-6. Meanwhile, the TRINITY (TX) UNIVERSITY TIGERS downed the HARDIN-SIMMONS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS by a final score of 14-7.
IF IT ISN’T SCOTTISH, IT’S CRAP! – The CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY TARTANS mauled the DEPAUW UNIVERSITY TIGERS to the tune of 45-14. And the ALMA COLLEGE SCOTS smacked around the MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH UNIVERSITY LIONS 41-21.
UNSUNG CLASSIC – In this game the RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE YELLOW JACKETS took on the CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 28-21 lead for the Red Dragons at Halftime. From there, the Yellow Jackets outscored Cortland State 14-0 for a 35-28 triumph.
BOMB ‘EM BACK TO THE STONE AGE – The ITHACA COLLEGE BOMBERS fought it out with the UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AT DARTMOUTH CORSAIRS. The Bombers parlayed a 21-0 lead in the opening Quarter into a 42-0 advantage by the Half. Following the break, Ithaca College won the game 63-20.
CAT’S PAJAMAS – This game pitted the LINFIELD COLLEGE WILDCATS against the POMONA-PITZER COLLEGE SAGEHENS. The Wildcats were on top 20-14 come Halftime and 27-24 to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th Linfield College churned out 24 unanswered points for a 51-24 victory.
SHUTOUTS – The UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR CRUSADERS crushed the HUNTINGDON UNIVERSITY HAWKS 54-0 ### The SAINT JOHN’S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES won 49-0 over the NORTHWESTERN (MN) EAGLES ### Meanwhile, the MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS spanked the SALISBURY SEA GULLS 51-0 ### The DELAWARE VALLEY AGGIES clobbered the GALLAUDET BISON 59-0 ### And the NORTH CENTRAL CARDINALS won 50-0 against the LAKE FOREST COLLEGE FORESTERS.
NCAA DIVISION THREE BOWLS
SCOTTY WHITELAW BOWL – In this Bowl Game the RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS squared off against the MORRISVILLE STATE MUSTANGS. A scoreless opening Quarter was followed by a 3-3 tie come Halftime. The Mustangs went up 6-3 in the 3rd Quarter, but in the 4th the Engineers came back to win it 10-6.
NEW ENGLAND BOWL – The PLYMOUTH STATE PANTHERS battled the HUSSON STATE EAGLES. The Eagles led 14-0 in the 1st Quarter and 20-7 at the Half. The Panthers pulled to within 20-14 to end the 3rd Quarter before eking out a 21-20 Upset victory in the 4th.
ASA S. BUSHNELL BOWL – This Bowl pitted the WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE PRESIDENTS against the HOBART COLLEGE STATESMEN. The Presidents went from zero to sixty, turning a 7-6 1st Quarter edge into a 35-12 advantage by the break. In the 2nd Half only 6 points were scored as Washington & Jefferson won out 35-18.
JAMES LYNAH BOWL – The GROVE CITY COLLEGE WOLVERINES battled it out with the FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON UNIVERSITY AT FLORHAM DEVILS. At Halftime the Wolverines were on top of the Devils by a score of 21-7. That became 21-14 in the 3rd Quarter before the 4th saw GCC clinch a 31-14 triumph.
ISTHMUS BOWL – A clash between the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT RIVER FALLS FALCONS and the WASHINGTON (St. Louis) UNIVERSITY BEARS was in store here. The Bears led 7-0 in the opening Quarter but the Falcons went up 24-7 by the Half. That became 24-14 to end the 3rd Quarter before UW-River Falls won out 31-24 in the end.
LAKEFRONT BOWL – The MONMOUTH COLLEGE FIGHTING SCOTS went up against the CONCORDIA (WI) FALCONS. The 1st Half was nearly all Fighting Scots as Monmouth College was out in front 28-7 at the midpoint. The Falcons perked up offensively from there, but the Fighting Scots still won by a comfortable score of 45-20.
CENTENNIAL-MAC BOWL SERIES
GAME ONE – This game in the Bowl series between the Centennial Conference and the Middle Atlantic Conference saw the CC’s URSINUS COLLEGE BEARS play the KING’S COLLEGE MONARCHS out of the MAC. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 14-7 Bears edge by Halftime. The Monarchs pulled to within 14-13 to end the 3rd Quarter, but in the 4th, Ursinus College pulled away for a 24-13 victory.
GAME TWO – The JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BLUE JAYS, from the CC, did battle with the MAC’s STEVENSON UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS. The Blue Jays led 7-0 in the opening Quarter and 20-7 at the break. From there Johns Hopkins shut out the Mustangs to win the game 27-7.
GAME THREE – The Centennial Conference took the series 3 games to none this year, as the MUHLENBERG COLLEGE MULES faced the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN. The Mules were largely in charge all the way, converting a 28-14 Halftime lead into a victory by a final score of 48-21.
