Taking a look at Thursday night’s games:
NCAA DIVISION TWO
DOWN GOES NUMBER THREE – The number 5 team in the nation – the GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS – welcomed the 3rd ranked COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES OREDIGGERS. After a scoreless 1st Quarter the Lakers led 7-0 at Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended with Grand Valley State out in front 17-6, but the Lakers had to hold on against a furious 4th Quarter rally by the Orediggers. The final score was Grand Valley State 25 Colorado School of Mines 22.
WORKING OVERTIME – The SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM won a 41-34 Overtime affair against the visiting ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS ### Meanwhile, the BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES survived a 35-34 OT visit from the JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY GOLDEN BULLS ### And the MCKENDREE UNIVERSITY BEARCATS defeated their hosts the NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS 31-24 in the extra session.
OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES toppled the number 11 NOTRE DAME COLLEGE FALCONS in a 31-14 affair ### And the MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS paid a visit to the 16th ranked BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS and defeated them by a final tally of 37-34.
DOUBLING UP ON THE COMPETITION – In this game the SOUTHERN ARKANSAS UNIVERSITY MULERIDERS played host to the NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE RANGERS. The Muleriders led 21-9 come Halftime and kept up the pressure after the break. In the end Southern Arkansas University hammered the Rangers 62-31.
RANKED TEAMS ROLLING – The number 1 FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS won out 36-20 against the visiting CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY WILDCATS ### The 4th ranked NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS downed the FORT HAYS STATE TIGERS 33-19 ### And the number 9 HARDING UNIVERSITY BISON won 29-12 at the EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY TIGERS.
SHUTOUT – The PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS took the field against their guests the UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES. The Mules went up 3-0 in the 1st Quarter before the Gorillas seized a 14-3 advantage headed into the Half. That became a 21-3 Pittsburg State lead in the 3rd and finally a 21-10 Gorilla victory.
THOSE SEVENTIES SCORES – The TUSCULUM COLLEGE PIONEERS eviscerated the SAINT AUGUSTINE’S UNIVERSITY FALCONS to the tune of 70-13 ### And the SAGINAW VALLEY STATE CARDINALS folded, spindled and mutilated the hapless WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BOBCATS in a 72-0 laugher.
CLASH IN NEW MEXICO – This game saw the EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS travel to face their in-state rivals the NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS. The opening Quarter ended with the Greyhounds up 3-0 before expanding that to a 10-3 advantage at the break. From there ENMU outscored the Cowboys 24-15 to win the game 34-18.
ROAD WARRIORS – The SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS trounced their hosts the MISSOURI S&T MINERS by a score of 43-20 ### Elsewhere, the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS triumphed 40-26 at the SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM ### And the UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-KEARNEY LOPERS downed the MISSOURI SOUTHERN LIONS 24-7.
SHUTOUT – The MISSOURI WESTERN STATE GRIFFONS welcomed the UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BRONCHOS (their spelling). A 14-0 1st Quarter lead for the Griffons remained unchanged at Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended with Missouri Western State in charge 21-0 and the 4th in a 35-0 beatdown by the Griffons.
HAPPY HOMESTANDS – The PACE UNIVERSITY SETTERS (as in Irish Setters) prevailed over the EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY WARRIORS by a final count of 31-16 ### And the WASHBURN UNIVERSITY ICHABODS crushed the visiting LINCOLN (MO) UNIVERSITY BLUE TIGERS 45-3.
NCAA DIVISION THREE
IT’S COBBERIN’ TIME – The CONCORDIA COLLEGE (Moorhead) COBBERS took it on the road against the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS. Neither team scored in the 1st Half, but the Vikings grabbed a 6-0 lead to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th the Cobbers came from behind to win this tight game by a final score of 14-12.
SHUTOUT – In this game the TRINE UNIVERSITY THUNDER played host to the ANDERSON UNIVERSITY RAVENS and defeated them in a piece of defensive perfection. The Thunder led the Ravens 7-0 in the 1st Quarter and 24-0 at Halftime on their way to a 38-0 manhandling of Anderson U.
ROAD WARRIORS – The ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUE BOYS visited the LAKELAND COLLEGE MUSKIES and won out 38-20 ### Meanwhile, the BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY BLAZERS crushed the MILLSAPS COLLEGE MAJORS 49-21 in their own house ### And the WILMINGTON COLLEGE QUAKERS won 52-27 at the SOUTHERN VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS (should be the Danites).
