The year 2020 is going to be the year of Top 20 lists here at Balladeer’s Blog. Here we go with the 20 Coolest-Named College Sports Teams in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association)
WEBB INSTITUTE WEBBIES
Location: Glen Cove, NY
Comment: Sure, some people may have gone with Webslingers or even Webbslingers for this team but that would not be true to Webb Institute’s location and lore.
GREAT BAY COLLEGE HERONS
Location: Portsmouth, NH
Comment: Herons are similar to storks and ibises and dwell on every continent except Antarctica. Their coolness factor and obvious adaptability make them an ideal mascot for a college’s athletic teams!
PRATT INSTITUTE CANNONEERS
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Comment: The team name Cannoneers all by itself would put Pratt Institute on this list but when you throw in that terrific logo at left it takes everything to the next level.
EAST/WEST UNIVERSITY PHANTOMS
Location: Chicago, IL
Comment: Goths and college sports fans alike can get behind the incredibly cool team name and logo for the Phantoms of East/West University!
UNIVERSITY OF MAINE AT AUGUSTA MOOSE
Location: Hoboken, NJ (I’m KIDDING!) Augusta, ME
Comment: Fear the Moose! Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog may recall that my D3 20 Coolest list had the Mary Baldwin College Squirrels and I wished then that the Moose played in the same division so I could do a “Moose and Squirrel” bit. No harm done, though, since I’ve now used the same lame joke on both lists.
CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA STEELS
Location: Hyde Park, NY
Comment: Presenting the academic institution where students, faculty and administrators can all honestly say “I’m with the CIA.” This school, known as “The World’s Premier Culinary College”, was founded in 1946 as a successor to the Office of Strategic Skilletry (I’m kidding. But not about the year it was founded.)
SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS COLLEGE POMEROYS
Location: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN
Comment: This school’s teams are named after Mary Joseph Pomeroy, who graduated from and taught at the institution. The Woodsies, as they’re called , take pride in the fact that their school was founded as an academy for young women in 1841 by a woman who went on to become Indiana’s first Saint, Mother Theodore Guerin.
HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE FROGS
Location: Amherst, MA
Comment: The Hampshire College Frogs are almost as well-known as Cyber Frog, the creation of the legendary Ethan Van Sciver. If anyone DOES want to call their sports teams the Cyber Frogs they’d probably need to license it from EVS.
FLORIDA NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CONQUISTADORS
Location: Hialeah, FL
Comment: When you think of Florida you think of Ponce de Leon and when you think of him you think of Conquistadors, a terrific name for sports teams. And a cool logo goes hand-in hand with that name.
CROWN COLLEGE ROYAL CRUSADERS
Location: Powell, TN
Comment: This school takes the already immeasurably cool name Crusaders and takes it to the next level by slapping the word Royal in front. What’s not to like?
WRIGHT STATE AT THE LAKE LAKERS
Location: Celina, OH
Comment: The name Lakers may not be all that unique compared to other teams on this list but you have to admit that lake monster logo has a certain something going for it.
BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES
Location: Bluefield, WV
Comment: Almost Heaven, West Virginia, home of the Bluefield State Big Blues, easily one of the catchiest and most memorable names for college sports teams.
VERMONT TECH GREEN KNIGHTS
Location: Randolph Center, VT
Comment: The Green Knights have a very appropriate name for a college team from the Green Mountain State. No beheading rituals, though, not even during Hell Week for pledges.
UNIVERSITY OF MAINE AT MACHIAS CLIPPERS
Location: Machias, ME
Comment: Machias, ME is known for its nautical associations, especially as a haven for rebel privateers during America’s Revolutionary War.
WILLIAMSON COLLEGE OF THE TRADES MECHANICS
Location: Media, PA
Comment: “Charles Bronson IS The Mechanic!” Okay, now that I have that out of my system we can all take time to appreciate the coolness that IS the nickname The Mechanics. I’m a sucker for really cool nicknames that also convey the spirit of the educational institution they’re affiliated with.
OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS
Location: Huntsville, AL
Comment: “Ambassadors” is almost unique among college team names and carries with it so much inherent coolness that it would be in violation of several treaties to leave it off this list.
FIVE TOWNS COLLEGE SOUND
Location: Dix Hills, NY
Comment: Located on Long Island, Five Towns College was established in 1972 and has gained a reputation as a path to music-related careers in the entertainment industry. Courses in other creative arts are also available.
NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS
Location: Newport News, VA
Comment: The Builders’ motto is “We build great ships: Craftmanship … Scholarship … Leadership” If you’re wondering why, if they build great ships, they’re not called the Shipbuilders instead, well, just say it out loud a few times and you’ll see the potential minefield they’re avoiding.
CARLOW UNIVERSITY CELTICS
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Comment: From Steel Country it’s the Carlow University Celtics, with a cool logo that goes along nicely with their classic team name.
OHIO STATE-MARION SCARLET WAVE
Location: Marion, OH
Comment: The Scarlet Wave is a nickname every bit as cool as The Crimson Tide and The Green Wave. You can’t go wrong with names like this for sports teams as far as I’m concerned and I’ve been saying for years that when Syracuse changed their team’s names from The Orangemen to The Orange that they’d have been better off going with something like The Orange Force instead. Ohio State-Marion no longer has sports but they used to be in the USCAA.
