DOUBLE OVERTIME – The BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS hosted the UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS in this 1st Round game. A 17-13 Halftime edge for the Ravens became a 20-17 Patriots lead to end the 3rd Quarter. Benedictine College tied things up at 34-34 to force Overtime. The 1st OT wound up as a 41-41 deadlock but in the 2nd OT the Ravens emerged with a 48-41 triumph.
TROUBLE RIGHT HERE IN ORANGE CITY – The DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS traveled to face Orange City, IA’s NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE RED RAIDERS. After a scoreless opening Quarter the Blue Hawks were on top of the Red Raiders 7-6 come Halftime. Neither team scored in the 3rd Quarter following which Dickinson State added 7 more points in the 4th for a 14-6 Upset.
UPSET IN INDIANAPOLIS – The SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS took it on the road against their familiar foes the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS in this game. A 14-14 1st Quarter tie was unchanged at the break. In the 3rd Quarter the Cougars grabbed a 24-21 lead then added 10 more points from there to win it 34-21.
WILDCAT ON WILDCAT VIOLENCE – The BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS took on the home-standing BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS in 1st Round action. Baker University trailed in this catfight 14-13 in the 1st Quarter before going up 16-14 at the Half. Bethel roared back for a 34-23 advantage to end the 3rd Quarter but Baker forced OT with a 41-41 tie in the 4th. In the extra session Baker eked out a 44-41 Upset.
DEFENSIVE DUEL – The KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES welcomed the LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS to Salina. Neither Defense gave up points in the 1st Quarter and Halftime arrived with the score knotted up at 7-7. A 9-7 Lions edge ended the 3rd Quarter before the Coyotes went on to win the game 15-9.
THIS GAME WAS FOR THE BIRDS – The CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS winged their way to Georgia to face the REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Rottweilers). By Halftime the Cardinals led 10-3 but in the 3rd Quarter Concordia stretched that out to a 24-3 advantage. At the end of an action-packed 4th Quarter the Cardinals consummated a 31-21 Upset of Reinhardt.
STAMPEDE – This game pitted the MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS against the visiting ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS. The Mustangs led the Battlin’ Bears 21-0, 21-6 and 41-6 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters respectively. In the 4th Morningside College coasted to a comfortable 49-20 victory.
BLOWOUT – In Fort Wayne, IN the Defending National Champions, the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS COUGARS, played host to the GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS (should be the Zebras). The Cougars wasted no time seizing a 13-0 lead in the 1st Quarter and never looked back from there. USF dominated on both sides of the ball to win the game 34-3.
NCAA DIVISION TWO
HILLSDALE ON THE ROAD – The revered HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS found themselves on the road against the KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY GOLDEN BEARS in opening round action. At Halftime the Chargers faced a 20-6 deficit but by the end of the 3rd Quarter they were on top 27-20. They kept up that pace in the 4th, advancing to the next round with a 40-26 Upset.
BULLDOGS MOVING ON – The FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS downed the visiting HARDING UNIVERSITY BISON in a 21-19 Instant Classic ### Meanwhile the WINGATE UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS pulled off a 41-31 Upset at the UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA WOLVES ### And the BOWIE STATE BULLDOGS defeated their guests the UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS 41-35.
CHARGING TO THE NEXT ROUND – Teams called Chargers pulling off an Upset was a recurring theme yesterday. The UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN CHARGERS paid a visit to the WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY GOLDEN RAMS. This back and forth affair saw the Golden Rams on top 14-7 in the 1st Quarter, the Chargers leading 21-14 at the break and West Chester up 28-21 in the 3rd. UNH went on to win it 35-28.
SLIPPERY AND SLIMY – The SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY ROCK (sic) took on the home-standing LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY-POST PIONEERS. A 17-6 Halftime lead for the Rock was followed by a scoreless 3rd Quarter. When all was said and done Slippery Rock went back home boasting a 20-16 Upset.
VICTORY IN INDY – The UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS defended their home field against the formidable FORT HAYS STATE TIGERS in this opening round game. The Greyhounds led 7-0 and 17-14 in the 1st and 2nd Quarters respectively. In the 3rd the Tigers went on top 24-17 only to see U of I race past them for a 38-27 victory.
COLORADO CLASH – The COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES battled their hosts the COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES OREDIGGERS. The only lead for the Orediggers came with a 3-0 edge in the 1st Quarter. By Halftime the Thunder Wolves were up 10-3, then they outscored Colorado School of Mines 27-14 in the 2nd Half for a 37-17 Upset smackdown.
BLOWOUTS – The NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS absolutely totaled the home-standing GRAND VALLEY STATE LAKERS, upsetting them 42-17 ### Meanwhile the defending champion TEXAS A&M AT COMMERCE LIONS toppled their hosts the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AT DULUTH BULLDOGS in a 33-17 Upset ### And the LENOIR-RHYNE BEARS took out the visiting FLORIDA TECH PANTHERS 43-21.
PLAYOFF SHUTOUT – The TARLETON STATE TEXANS achieved defensive perfection against the visiting AZUSA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY COUGARS. The Texans parlayed a 16-0 1st Quarter lead into a 37-0 advantage at the break. From there Tarleton State coasted to a FIFTY-EIGHT to NOTHING victory over the Cougars.

EASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE – The top 3 teams in the nation rolled along easily in their opening round games: The (1) UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS eviscerated the DENISON UNIVERSITY BIG RED 60-0 ### The (2) MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR CRUSADERS routed the HARDIN-SIMMONS COWBOYS 27-6 ### And the (3) SAINT JOHN’S UNIVERSITY JOHNNIES clobbered the MARTIN LUTHER KNIGHTS 84-6.
UPSETS – Typical of D3 1st Round games there were very few Upsets. The SAINT NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS toppled the TRINE UNIVERSITY THUNDER 31-7 ### Meanwhile the MUHLENBERG COLLEGE MULES won a 20-13 Instant Classic against the favored DELAWARE VALLEY AGGIES ### And the RANDOLPH-MACON COLLEGE YELLOW JACKETS edged their hosts the JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY BLUE STREAKS 23-20.
ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT WHITEWATER WARHAWKS folded, spindled and mutilated the EUREKA COLLEGE RED DEVILS to the tune of 67-14 ### The NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE CARDINALS blanked the HANOVER PANTHERS 52-0 ### And the CENTRE COLLEGE COLONELS slapped down the WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON PRESIDENTS 54-13.
OTHER SHUTOUTS – The JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BLUE JAYS achieved Defensive perfection against the MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERS in a 49-0 victory ### And the BERRY COLLEGE VIKINGS won 31-0 over the MARYVILLE (TN) SCOTS.
FORTIES OVER TWENTIES – The FROSTBURG STATE BOBCATS handily defeated the WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE GOLDEN BEARS by a score of 42-24 ### And the COLLEGE AT BROCKPORT GOLDEN EAGLES kicked around the FRAMINGHAM STATE RAMS 40-27.
NO CONTEST – The WHITWORTH UNIVERSITY PIRATES tore apart the CLAREMONT-MUDD-SCRIPPS STAGS 48-6 ### Meanwhile the BETHEL (MN) ROYALS struck down their opponents the WARTBURG KNIGHTS 41-14 ### And the RENSSELAER POLYTECHNICAL INSTITUTE ENGINEERS won a 38-14 drubbing of the HUSSON UNIVERSITY EAGLES.
