TOPPLING NUMBER FOUR – Yesterday the NAIA’s CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY PHOENIX hosted the number 4 team in the nation – the LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS. The Phoenix put the Blue Raiders on Upset Alert with a 10-7 Halftime lead that became 17-13 to end the 3rd Quarter. In the end Cumberland U made it a happy Senior Day by holding on for a 24-21 triumph.
MARATHON GAME OF THE DAY – Down in NCAA Division Three came Saturday’s longest game. The WESTERN CONNECTICUT STATE COLONIALS faced the visiting BRIDGEWATER STATE BEARS and, though trailing 21-14 at the break, came back to force Overtime with a 28-28 tie. The 1st OT ended in a 34-34 deadlock, neither team scored in the 2nd and the 3rd ended at 42-42. In the FOURTH OVERTIME the Colonials won it 50-48.
NUMBER SIX GETS DEEP-SIXED – Back in the NAIA the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS took it on the road against the country’s 6th ranked EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS. The Pioneers were chasing the Crusaders 19-13 at the Half but in the 4th Quarter they outscored EU 20-7 for a stunning 33-26 Upset victory.
DOWN GOES NUMBER EIGHT – NCAA Division Three’s ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS welcomed the number 8 team in the land – the WESLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES. The Profs trailed 14-7 in the 1st Quarter and 21-14 at the break. Rowan University went on top 28-27 in the 3rd, a tally that held up as the final score as well.
HILLSDALE’S CAVALIER ATTITUDE – In NCAA Division Two the storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS paid a visit to the WALSH UNIVERSITY CAVALIERS yesterday. The Chargers held a razor-thin 7-6 edge going into the locker room but in the 2nd Half got more and more separation from the Cavaliers. The final score was Hillsdale 28 Walsh 9.
USCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – Moving to the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association), the DEAN COLLEGE BULLDOGS did battle with the visiting GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY BISON. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie was as close as it got. From there the Bulldogs led 33-7 at Halftime enroute to a 53-21 victory.

OTHER UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES defended their Home Field against the (14) SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS (should be the Sea Gulls), defeating them 45-34 ### And the (25) AVILA UNIVERSITY EAGLES (formerly the Avalanche) won a 25-21 Instant Classic with the visiting (22) OTTAWA (KS) BRAVES.
A DOUBLE SHOT OF THAT OT LOVE – The PERU STATE BOBCATS found themselves on the road against the WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN yesterday. Four Quarters wasn’t enough for these two teams. One Overtime wasn’t enough, either. In Double Overtime the Bobcats emerged with a 26-20 victory.
UNHAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES spoiled Homecoming for the EDWARD WATERS COLLEGE TIGERS by lambasting them 41-14 ### And the (9) KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES doubled-up on their hosts the MCPHERSON COLLEGE BULLDOGS (should be the Mastiffs) to the tune of 76-38.
NCAA DIVISION TWO
UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – As it turned out there was only one Upset in the rankings for Division Two yesterday. The FLORIDA TECH PANTHERS were guests of the 17th ranked UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS. The Panthers trailed the Argonauts 21-10 at Halftime but pulled to within 21-20 in the 3rd Quarter. From there Florida Tech toppled their opponents 30-28.
ALL-NAME GAMES – The HENDERSON STATE REDDIES won a thrilling 20-17 home-stand against the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM ### Meanwhile the PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS totaled the visiting UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES 48-28 ### And the UNC-PEMBROKE BRAVES survived a 48-34 visit from the CONCORD UNIVERSITY MOUNTAIN LIONS.
ROAD WARRIORS – The MISSOURI S&T MINERS were on the road against the QUINCY UNIVERSITY HAWKS and defeated them in a 20-13 Instant Classic ### And the MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CHOCTAWS notched a 37-24 road win over the SHORTER UNIVERSITY HAWKS.

LIONS AND LOGGERS – The TRINITY BIBLE COLLEGE LIONS from the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) traveled to face the LEWIS-CLARK VALLEY COLLEGE LOGGERS yesterday. The Lions rained on Homecoming for the Loggers, ultimately defeating them in a 28-24 game for the ages.
BLOWOUT – The GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY PANTHERS played host to the CROWN COLLEGE STORM. By Halftime the Panthers had built up a 21-7 lead over the Storm and never looked back from there. In the end Greenville U smacked down Crown College to the tune of FORTY-ONE to FOURTEEN.
HAPPY HOMECOMING – The (3) SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS marked Homecoming with a game against the TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY RAMS. The 1st Half was a shootout with the Lions leading 21-14 in the 1st Quarter and 42-34 at the Half. Points were much harder to come by in the 2nd Half, but SAGU won it 53-46.
NCAA DIVISION THREE
OTHER UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The only other Upset in D3’s rankings came in the game between the WESTMINSTER (PA) COLLEGE TITANS and the visiting 11th ranked WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE PRESIDENTS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 20-7 Titans lead at the Half before the Presidents tied the game at 20-20 to end the 3rd Quarter. Westminster went on to win it 27-20.
WORKIN’ OVERTIME – The SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY RIVER HAWKS paid a visit to the URSINUS COLLEGE BEARS in Collegeville, PA. A 14-14 Halftime tie became a 35-35 deadlock to end Regulation. In the extra session the River Hawks shut out the Bears then added a Touchdown for a 41-35 victory.
ROLLING ON THE ROAD – The CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS traveled to do battle with the WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY PIONEERS and body-slammed them by a score of 39-10 ### And the OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY POLAR BEARS won a 49-46 affair at the CAPITAL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS.
