USCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: DAY ONE RESULTS

Marygrove College MustangsDAY ONE – GAME ONE: The 10 seeds – the MARYGROVE COLLEGE MUSTANGS – faced the 7th seeded PENN STATE AT MONT ALTO LIONS. The Mustangs surprised the Lions by seizing a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st Inning, then making it a 5-0 score in the 3rd and 6-0 in the 4th.

PSU-Mont Alto at last got on the scoreboard in the 5th Inning to make it a 6-1 game. The rest of the way Marygrove College added 3 more runs but gave up 6 to the Lions. The Mustangs won the game 9-7 with Pitcher Daniel Bailey on the mound for the entire game.

Bluefield State Big Blues logoDAY ONE, GAME TWO: In this game the 8th seeded BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES took the diamond against the 9 seeds – the CENTRAL PENN COLLEGE SILVER KNIGHTS. The Big Blues got off to a 1-0 edge in the 1st Inning but the Silver Knights put up 2 runs each in the 2nd and 3rd to take a 4-1 advantage.

Neither team scored in the 4th Inning but Bluefield State tied things up at 4-4 in the 5th. The 6th Inning saw the Big Blues explode for SIX runs, following which they shut out the Silver Knights the rest of the way for a 10-4 victory. Addison Meeks inherited the Earth as the winning Pitcher.

newportnewsapprentice-school-builderDAY ONE, GAME THREE: Up next the 4 seeds – the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS – took on the 5th seeded CLEARY UNIVERSITY PROWLING COUGARS. The Builders wasted no time getting on top of Cleary University, making it a 1-0 score in the 1st Inning and 7-0 in the 2nd.

The Prowling Cougars pulled to within 7-3 by the end of the 4th Inning but Newport News Apprentice School dominated the rest of the way on both sides of the ball. In the end the Builders won the game by a final count of 12-3. Pitcher Mike Brumfield notched the W for NNAS.  

Penn State Dubois logoDAY ONE, GAME FOUR: The second upset of the day was in the offing here as the 6th seeded PENN STATE AT DUBOIS NITTANY LIONS did battle with the 3 seeds – the WRIGHT STATE AT THE LAKE CAMPUS LAKERS. The Lakers went up 3-1 in the 1st Inning but then their bats suffered a dry spell.

PSU-Dubois cut the Wright State at the Lake lead to just 3-2 in the 2nd Inning then overtook them for a 9-3 lead in the 3rd. The Nittany Lions added 1, 3 and 4 runs respectively in the 4th, 5th and 6th Innings while the Lakers could only muster 2 more runs the rest of the way. Dubois won this SEVENTEEN to FIVE laugher behind pitching from Dominik Criner.

College of Saint Joseph's Fighting Saints BIGDAY ONE, GAME FIVE – The 2nd seeded COLLEGE OF SAINT JOSEPH’S (sic) FIGHTING SAINTS come in as the Defending National Champions of USCAA baseball. Their opponents were the 10 seeds – the MARYGROVE COLLEGE MUSTANGS, who had won one of the early games of the day.

Neither team scored in this Pitcher’s Duel for the first 4 Innings. In the 5th Inning the Fighting Saints took a 1-0 lead then added the final run of the game in the 6th. College of Saint Joseph’s won the game by a tight score of 2-0. Pitcher Nicholas Burch went the entire game for the Fighting Saints.

Cincinatti Clermont Cougars logo biggerDAY ONE, GAME SIX: Closing out the 1st day for the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) was this clash between the top seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI AT CLERMONT COUGARS – and the other winner from the early games – the 8th seeded BLUEFIELD STATE BIG BLUES.

The Cougars led Bluefield State 4-0 by the 2nd Inning but the Big Blues made it a 4-1 game in the 3rd. They never scored again, however as the dominant UC-Cincinnati team went on to trounce them by a final tally of 9-1. The winning Pitcher for the Cougars was Jake Allen.
