NUMBER TWO FALLS – The 6th ranked UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA LIONS hosted the number 2 team in the nation – the UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA WOLVES. This was a game for the ages which had football fans across the nation on the edge of their seats. In the end the Lions prevailed over the Wolves, eking out a 24-23 victory.
TOPPLING NUMBER FOUR – Meanwhile the unranked TIFFIN UNIVERSITY DRAGONS did battle with their guests – the number 4 ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES. This was another hard-fought affair that provided 4 Quarters of gridiron gold. The Dragons managed to drag down the Eagles by a final tally of 35-32.
THE MECHANICS COME THROUGH – Over in the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) the WILLIAMSON COLLEGE OF THE TRADES MECHANICS took the field against the visiting GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY PATRIOTS. The Mechanics dominated the entire game, winning it 33-6 and stayed right behind Newport News Apprentice School in Balladeer’s Blog’s USCAA rankings.
QUADRUPLE OVERTIME – The AVERETT UNIVERSITY COUGARS took it on the road against the LAGRANGE COLLEGE PANTHERS yesterday. The Halftime score was 27-27 and then Regulation ended in a 48-48 tie. These two teams just couldn’t get enough of each other as it took FOUR OVERTIME PERIODS before the Cougars emerged with a 65-62 victory.
NEWPORT NEWS IS GOOD NEWS – The USCAA’s NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS traveled to take on divisional rivals the ALFRED STATE PIONEERS. The Builders seized a 14-0 1st Quarter lead and were in control from there. They kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter, winning the game 24-8.
PATRIOTIC FERVOR – Meanwhile in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) the MORTHLAND COLLEGE PATRIOTS, who are still in their very first year of intercollegiate football, crushed their NCCAA rivals the MARANATHA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY SABERCATS. The Patriots led the Sabercats 20-3 by the break enroute to a 42-10 blowout.

WHEN RANKED TEAMS CLASH – The (1) MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS (Defending Champs) defeated the (2) ST FRANCIS COUGARS 35-21 in their own house ### The (3) BAKER UNIVERSITY WILDCATS doubled up on their hosts the (22) PERU STATE BOBCATS 42-21 ### Meanwhile the (4) DOANE COLLEGE TIGERS won 30-20 at the (18) MIDLAND WARRIORS ### And the (6) MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS thrashed the (21) CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS 55-13.
INSTANT CLASSICS – The number 12 TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS did battle with the visiting 25th ranked STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS and won a 45-42 nailbiter ### And the CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS vanquished the homestanding ST FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS 24-21 in an OT session.
SHUTOUTS – Teams achieving Defensive Perfection on Saturday were the OTTAWA UNIVERSITY BRAVES, who notched a 10-0 road victory over the BETHEL (KS) COLLEGE THRESHERS ### And the CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY PHOENIX (love that name), who dispatched the visiting UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS by a final tally of 21-zip.
WORKING OVERTIME – The LYON COLLEGE SCOTS welcomed the SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS. This turned into a shootout and after 4 Quarters were through the Scots and the Lions were knotted up at 42-42. In OT Lyon College shut out SAGU and then got a TD for a 48-42 triumph.
HAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES celebrated Homecoming with a 38-28 win over the TRINITY INTERNATIONAL TROJANS ### Meanwhile the (7) LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS annihilated the visiting UNION (KY) BULLDOGS to the tune of 53-17 ### And the (8) GRAND VIEW UNIVERSITY VIKINGS doubled up on the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE PIONEERS 56-28.
UNHAPPY HOMECOMINGS – The DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS spoiled Homecoming for the BRIAR CLIFF CHARGERS, hammering them by a score of 38-10 ### The WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN in the meantime clobbered the AVILA EAGLES 65-30 ### And the EVANGEL UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS rained on the GRACELAND YELLOW JACKETS’ festivities by a count of 28-14.
ONE POINT WONDERS – The UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY SPIRES visited the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES in a battle of cool-named teams yesterday. The Spires snuck past the Swedes 34-33. ### And the MISSOURI BAPTIST UNIVERSITY triumphed over their hosts the TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS in a 43-42 affair.

UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY – The CALIFORNIA (PA) UNIVERSITY VULCANS doubled up on the visiting (11) SLIPPERY ROCK ROCKETS by a score of 52-26 ### For their part the WINONA STATE WARRIORS eked out a 34-31 win over the (16) MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS ### Meanwhile the fledgling UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS upset the (19) FLORIDA TECH PANTHERS 42-39 ### And the LONG ISLAND U AT POST PIONEERS beat their hosts the (20) ASSUMPTION GREYHOUNDS in a 19-18 squeaker.
THE BATTLE OF SIOUX FALLS – Sioux Falls, SD witnessed the latest edition in the rivalry between its in-city rivals the (12) UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS and the (24) AUGUSTANA (SD) VIKINGS. The Cougars came out on top in the contest, besting the Vikings by a score of 35-20 in their own house.
WORKING OVERTIME – This sole Overtime game in Division Two yesterday pitted the MERCYHURST UNIVERSITY LAKERS against the homestanding GANNON UNIVERSITY GOLDEN KNIGHTS. The Lakers wound up winning the game in Overtime by a score of 38-35 and took home the Niagara Cup – the trophy these two rivals fight over every year.
WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A POLO MATCH BROKE OUT – This clash was between the LINCOLN UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI BLUE TIGERS and their guests the LANE COLLEGE DRAGONS. The final score was more like a Polo Match as the Blue Tigers won it by a tally of 12-9.
NO COUNTRY FOR MARAUDERS – The BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY HUSKIES welcomed the MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY MARAUDERS and sent them home reeling from a 29-15 beatdown ### Meanwhile the BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS logged a 52-3 road win over the UNIVERSITY OF MARY MARAUDERS ### And the KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE PANTHERS defeated the CENTRAL STATE MARAUDERS 21-7.
ALL-NAME GAMES – The UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS defeated the visiting OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON in a 31-27 Instant Classic ### The (10) INDIANA (PA) CRIMSON HAWKS edged the SETON HILL UNIVERSITY GRIFFINS 47-39 ### And the PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS topped the homestanding WASHBURN UNIVERSITY ICHABODS 45-27.
OUTSTANDING DEFEAT OF A TEAM CALLED WILDCATS, TIGERS, EAGLES OR BULLDOGS – Regular readers of Balladeer’s Blog know how bored I am with those four overused team names. This week’s celebrant for an impressive victory over such a team would be the ALDERSON-BROADDUS UNIVERSITY BATTLERS. The Battlers smacked around the FORT VALLEY STATE WILDCATS to the tune of 33-9.

ONE AND TWO IN REAL FIGHTS – The Big Two teams that have split the D3 championship between them since 2005 usually blow out their Regular Season opponents by 30 points or more. Not so yesterday as the top-ranked UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS had to fight for a 38-21 road win over the NORTHERN OHIO POLAR BEARS. And the number 2 UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT WHITEWATER WARHAWKS barely got past their hosts, the (7) PLATTEVILLE PIONEERS 30-24.
SHOOTOUT – The MARIETTA COLLEGE PIONEERS did battle with the BALDWIN WALLACE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS. The Pioneers trailed the Yellow Jackets 14-13 in the 1st Quarter but tied the game at 35-35 by the break. The 3rd Quarter ended in a 49-49 score but Marietta College managed a 62-56 win in the 4th.
SHUTOUTS – The GUILFORD COLLEGE QUAKERS absolutely eviscerated the visiting CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY CARDINALS in a FIFTY-NINE to NOTHING laugher ### Meanwhile the DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE AGGIES logged a 48-zip road beatdown of the LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN ### And the FERRUM COLLEGE PANTHERS blanked the homestanding GREENSBORO PRIDE 30-0.
DEFENSIVE EPIC AT ELLIS OVAL – The TUFTS UNIVERSITY JUMBOS welcomed the BATES COLLEGE BOBCATS to Ellis Oval yesterday. After a scoreless 1st Quarter the Jumbos went on top 6-0 by Halftime. The Bobcats took a 7-6 edge in the 3rd Quarter but Tufts University got the win by a final score of 12-7.
