LANGSTON RULES THE WORLD – The NAIA tradition of upsetting higher division teams at least once a week continues! The LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS were guests of the NCAA Division TWO team the LINCOLN (MO) UNIVERSITY BLUE TIGERS. The Lions proceeded to mar this game called the L.U. Classic, toppling the home team by a final score of 23-13.
THE JAVELINAS ALSO RULE THE WORLD – The NCAA Division Two team called the TEXAS A&M AT KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS took it on the road against the Division ONE team the UNIVERSITY OF THE INCARNATE WORD CARDINALS. When the dust had settled in this thrilling game the Javelinas had also brought down a higher division team, in this case by a count of 31-22.
THE WOLVES ARE WORLD-BEATERS, TOO – Also from Division Two the WESTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY WOLVES were guests of Division ONE’s SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS. The Wolves showed the big boys of D1 how football is played in D2 by engineering an upset of their own. The final score was Western Oregon University 38 Hornets 30.
EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD – Division Two’s QUINCY UNIVERSITY HAWKS rounded out yesterday’s examples of teams pulling off upsets of higher division programs. The Hawks were on the road against Division ONE’s DRAKE UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS. This game was a true Instant Classic and after 4 bruising Quarters of football Quincy University went home with a 38-35 triumph.
NUMBER SEVEN TAKES A FALL – D3’s 25th ranked DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE AGGIES traveled to take on the number 7 team in the nation – the WESLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES (should be the Wesley Crushers). The Aggies trailed the Wolverines 7-0 in the 1st Quarter but had seized a 21-14 lead by Halftime. Neither team scored in the 2nd Half, so 21-14 wound up as the final score as well. Del Val QB Dashawn Darden threw for 214 yds with 2 TD’s in the win.
AND NUMBER EIGHT COMES TUMBLING AFTER – In the NAIA the number 16 DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS welcomed the 8th ranked TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS as part of the inter-conference challenge between the Great Plains Athletic Conference and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers shocked the Blue Jays with a 35-21 upset victory.

SAINTS OVER VIKINGS – As always Balladeer’s Blog chronicles the intense gridiron rivalry between the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and NCAA Division Three. The NAIA’s PRESENTATION COLLEGE SAINTS hosted D3’s LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY VIKINGS and won a game for the ages by a final tally of 17-10.
PRAIRIE WOLVES OVER BULLDOGS – There was a little extra spice to this clash because the NEBRASKA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRAIRIE WOLVES used to be in the NAIA before defecting to NCAA D3 for this season. The Prairie Wolves took on the visiting MCPHERSON COLLEGE BULLDOGS (should be the Mastiffs) and defeated them in a 35-29 nailbiter. This made it NAIA – 1, D3 – 1.
COMETS OVER BEAVERS – The MAYVILLE STATE COMETS from the NAIA did battle with the BUENA VISTA UNIVERSITY BEAVERS from D3. The Comets led the Beavers 14-10 in the 1st Quarter and expanded that to a 28-10 advantage by Halftime. In the 3rd Quarter Buena Vista U pulled to within 28-20 and the action-packed 4th ended with Mayville State’s 42-33 win. Comets QB Andrew Blake had 3 TD’s on 368 passing yards.
CARDINALS OVER THE EAGLES – D3’s NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE CARDINALS traveled to face the NAIA’s ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY (IL) EAGLES (should be the Wind Eagles). A 21-7 1st Quarter lead for the Cardinals remained unchanged at the break. From there both teams added 14 points for a final count of North Central College 35 Robert Morris U 21. NAIA – 2, D3 – 2.
TROJANS OVER THE WARRIORS – The TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY TROJANS (NAIA) played host to the WISCONSIN LUTHERAN COLLEGE WARRIORS (D3). After a scoreless 1st Quarter the Trojans grabbed a 24-0 lead by the Half. That became a 38-7 advantage in the 3rd Quarter and a final score of 55-21. This blowout win made it NAIA – 3, D3- 2.
JIMMIES OVER COBBERS – The NAIA’s UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES took the field against the visiting CONCORDIA (MOORHEAD) COBBERS out of D3. The Jimmies went up 7-0 in the opening Quarter and converted that into a 14-6 Halftime lead over the Cobbers. In the 2nd Half the University of Jamestown outscored Concordia-Moorhead 16-7 for a 30-13 victory. QB Dylan Klatt threw for 244 yds and 2 TD’s for the Jimmies. NAIA – 4, D3 – 2.
LIONS OVER YELLOW JACKETS – From the NAIA the SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS were on the road against D3’s HOWARD PAYNE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS. The Lions, showing their NAIA pride, went on to win this edge-of-your- seat classic 27-21. This made the final count NAIA – 5 and D3 – 2.

UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS paid a visit to the 24th ranked SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES and swatted them in their own house to the tune of 35-16. ### And the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS snuck past their guests the number 23 WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN in a 22-21 game for the ages.
WHEN RANKED TEAMS CLASH – The number 10 team in the nation – the SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS – played the visiting 14th ranked UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS. These familiar foes tore up the turf in their monumental battle. The Cougars went on to win this gridiron Armageddon by a final score of 42-35.
FIRST WIN FOR DAVENPORT – The DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY PANTHERS were playing on the road against the KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS. It was just the second intercollegiate football game for the Panthers after lat week’s loss. Davenport University won their first football victory in style, obliterating the Knights by an unbelievable score of FIFTY-NINE to NOTHING!
ROAD WARRIORS – The (13) KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES invaded the home of the BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS and defeated them 27-21. ### The STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS won a 28-21 road scrap with the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS ### And the MONTANA WESTERN BULLDOGS doubled-up on the COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES 26-13.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The DORDT COLLEGE DEFENDERS hosted the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS and went blow-for-blow with the 1-0 team before emerging with a 45-42 triumph. ### Meanwhile the CARROLL COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS made the MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS fall to 0-2 for 2016 by defeating them 27-24 ### And the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS won a 34-32 thriller against the UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS.

UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS welcomed the UNION (KY) BULLDOGS to Florida and outlasted them in a 27-21 triumph. ### And the NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS took the field against the visiting UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS and snuck past them by a final score of 24-23.
WORKING OVERTIME – The MALONE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS squared off against the visiting TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS. Four Quarters weren’t enough for these two hard-hitting programs and Regulation ended in a 33-33 tie. In Overtime the Pioneers held the Trojans scoreless and then scored a Touchdown for a 39-36 victory.
NCCAA OVER NAIA – The NCCAA’s MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CHOCTAWS defended their home field against the invading POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS out of the NAIA. The Choctaws wore down the Skyhawks as the game went on and in the end wound up defeating them by a final count of 28-16.
SHUTOUT – The storied UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN (MN) EAGLES did battle with their guests the AUGSBURG COLLEGE AUGGIES yesterday. After a scoreless 1st Quarter the Eagles took a 7-0 lead into Halftime. Following the break the Auggies were shut out yet again by the University of Northwestern (MN) while their hosts added another 7 points for a 14-0 result.
ROAD WARRIORS – The MARANATHA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY SABERCATS traveled to face the MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE KNIGHTS. A 7-0 1st Quarter lead for the Sabercats became 14-0 by the break. From there Maranatha Baptist University put up 6 more points to the 7 scored by the Knights for a 20-7 win. Sabercats QB Jonah Bueltel threw for 2 TD’s on 144 yds.

UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The (21) COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES OREDIGGERS clobbered the visiting (4) CSU-PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES to the tune of 57-21 ### Meanwhile the SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA MUSTANGS toppled the (13) UM-DULUTH BULLDOGS 42-38 ### And the HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS upset their guests the (25) UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS in a 30-24 thriller.
FIRST TIME OUT- The UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS played their very first intercollegiate football game yesterday. The D2 Argonauts traveled to face the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES and recorded their program’s first win AND their first shutout all in the same game! The University of West Florida won in an impressive 45-0 beatdown. Welcome to the gridiron, Argonauts.
ONE POINT WONDERS – The BLACK HILLS STATE YELLOW JACKETS found themselves on the road against the ADAMS STATE GRIZZLIES and eked out an exciting 34-33 victory ### Meanwhile the EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FIGHTING SCOTS snuck past their hosts the ST JOSEPH’s COLLEGE PUMAS 31-30 ### And the CHOWAN UNIVERSITY HAWKS won a 14-13 clash with the homestanding FAYETTEVILLE STATE BRONCOS.
MORE HISTORY IN THE MAKING – The UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT THE PERMIAN BASIN FALCONS were, like UWF above, playing in their inaugural intercollegiate football game. The Falcons got to notch their first W in their first game as well as they took on the visiting SUL ROSS STATE LOBOS. The final tally in this historic game was UT-Permian Basin 27 Lobos 6. WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A BASEBALL GAME BROKE OUT – The BENEDICT COLLEGE TIGERS welcomed the LIVINGSTONE COLLEGE BLUE BEARS in a game that turned out to be almost all-defense all the time. Believe it or not the final score in this very unusual contest turned out to be a mere 5-3 in favor of the Tigers.
ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – And at the other extreme you had these games: the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS totaled the WILLIAM JEWELL COLLEGE CARDINALS to the tune of 64-41 ### Meanwhile the MISSOURI S&T MINERS eviscerated the BACONE COLLEGE WARRIORS in a SIXTY-TWO to FOURTEEN laugher ### And the DELTA STATE STATESMEN clobbered the KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE PANTHERS 50-29.

UPSETS IN THE TOP TWENTY-FIVE – The FRANKLIN COLLEGE GRIZZLIES managed a hard-fought 43-39 victory over the (11) THOMAS MORE COLLEGE SAINTS ### The (23) SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEA GULLS upset the visiting (16) ALBRIGHT LIONS 34-16 ### Meanwhile the CENTRAL COLLEGE DUTCH won a 50-49 Overtime road clash with the (19) WHITWORTH PIRATES ### And the EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY TIGERS crushed their hosts the (21) TEXAS LUTHERAN BULLDOGS 44-20.
NCAA DIVISION THREE OVER USCAA – The METHODIST UNIVERSITY MONARCHS and the USCAA’s NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS were tied at 7-7 in the 1st Quarter. The Monarchs led 14-13 at Halftime but the Builders took a 20-17 edge into the 4th Quarter. Methodist University came from behind to win this 24-20 nailbiter.
MORE D3 OVER USCAA – Two more D3 teams defeated programs from the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association) on Saturday. The WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY PIONEERS crushed the visiting ALFRED STATE PIONEERS by a score of FORTY-THREE to THIRTEEN! ### And the CORNELL (IA) COLLEGE RAMS likewise crushed the homestanding IOWA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS in a FIFTY-ONE to TWENTY-ONE laugher.
ONE POINT WONDERS – The ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUE BOYS visited the ROSE-HULMAN UNIVERSITY ENGINEERS yesterday and won a 14-13 Instant Classic ### Meanwhile the BERRY COLLEGE VIKINGS managed a 34-33 victory over their guests the MARYVILLE COLLEGE SCOTS ### And the ELMHURST COLLEGE BLUE JAYS survived a 28-27 road trip against the LORAS COLLEGE DUHAWKS.
UNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The UNIVERSITY OF PUGET SOUND LOGGERS made a 4th Quarter comeback to defeat the visiting UNIVERSITY OF LA VERNE LEOPARDS in a 31-29 game for the ages ### And the MACMURRAY UNIVERSITY HIGHLANDERS won a 27-21 thriller against the homestanding ROCKFORD COLLEGE REGENTS.

CLASH OF TITANS – Two of the NJCAA’s powerhouses battled it out in this game which pitted the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS against the IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS. At Halftime the Blue Dragons trailed the Reivers 9-7 but by the end of the 3rd Quarter Hutchinson College was on top 15-9. The final score was Blue Dragons 21 Iowa Western 12. Chaz Capps and Chris James both saw action at QB for Hutch.
SHUTOUTS – The ASA COLLEGE (FL) SILVER STORM hosted the FLORIDA GATTACA and parlayed a 13-0 1st Quarter lead into a 54-0 shutout victory by game’s end ### Meanwhile the GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS bounced back from last week’s loss by crushing the MIDDLE GEORGIA STATE KNIGHTS 44-zip ### And the ARIZONA WESTERN COLLEGE MATADORS eviscerated the EVERETT COLLEGE RAVENS in a 66-0 laugher.
SAFETY AWARENESS – The NORTH DAKOTA STATE COLLEGE OF SCIENCE WILDCATS were on the road against the FOND DU LAC TRIBAL COLLEGE THUNDER. The Wildcats dominated in this game in which the only points that went to the Thunder came on two Safeties. North Dakota State College of Science notched a Safety of their own as the final score wound up being 22-4.
INSTANT CLASSICS – The traveling FORT SCOTT COLLEGE GREYHOUNDS trailed the INDEPENDENCE COLLEGE PIRATES 14-10 in the 1st Quarter but ultimately came back to win the game 22-20 ### The MONROE COLLEGE MUSTANGS defeated their hosts the ERIE KATS 28-21 ### And the PHOENIX COLLEGE BEARS survived a 43-42 visit from the MESA COLLEGE THUNDERBIRDS.
SEVEN POINTS OR LESS – The GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS improved to 2-0 with a 13-7 victory over the visiting HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES ### The DAKOTA COLLEGE AT BOTTINEAU LUMBERJACKS held on against a late rally to defeat the VERMILION COLLEGE IRONMEN 41-34 ### And the NORTHLAND COLLEGE PIONEERS won a 20-14 Overtime clash with the MESABI RANGE COLLEGE NORSE.
