MORE COLLEGE HOOPS TOURNAMENT ACTION

*** USCAA DIVISION TWO ***

Berkeley (NJ) KnightsNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – This was pretty much a hardcourt version of jousting as the top seeded BERKELEY (NY) COLLEGE KNIGHTS faced the 2 seeds – the CENTRAL PENN COLLEGE SILVER KNIGHTS. Points were flying back and forth with Berkeley College seizing a 40-37 advantage by Halftime. The 2nd Half saw even more red-hot offense as the Knights went on to win by a final count of 107-88! Massiah Merritt’s 34 points led BC.  * THE KNIGHTS ARE USCAA DIVISION TWO NATIONAL CHAMPIONS *  

*** NAIA ***

William Woods OwlsAMERICAN MIDWEST CONFERENCE – SEMIFINALS – The AMC’s first semifinal pitted the 5 seeds – the WILLIAM WOODS UNIVERSITY OWLS – against the top seeded FREED-HARDEMAN LIONS. The Owls pulled off a 92-82 upset.    ###    And in the 2 spot the COLUMBIA (MO) COUGARS advanced to the title game at the expense of the 3rd seeded PARK UNIVERSITY PIRATES. The final tally was Cougars 86  Pirates 81.  

usao_drovers_150px31SOONER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – SEMIFINALS – Another 1 seed fell in this tournament as the 5th seeded UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS (love that name) brought down the top seeded TEXAS WESLEYAN RAMS in a 75-73 hardcourt epic.    ###    And in the second semifinal in the SAC the 6 seeds – the WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS – toppled the 2nd seeded MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY EVANGELS by a tight final score of 92-87.  

lcsc_logo1FRONTIER CONFERENCE – SEMIFINALS – The top seeds – the LEWIS-CLARK STATE WARRIORS – move on to the conference title game with a tidy 76-68 triumph over the 6th seeded UNIVERSITY OF GREAT FALLS ARGONAUTS.    ###    And the 2nd seeded CARROLL (MT) COLLEGE FIGHTING SAINTS reserved their own spot in the championship clash. The Fighting Saints barely snuck by the 4 seeds – the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS – in an 84-81 nailbiter.

LSU-Alexandria GeneralsRED RIVER ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – SEMIFINALS – This has been an all-chalk, all the time tournament so far and the semifinals brought more of the same. The top seeded LSU-ALEXANDRIA GENERALS (who have lost just TWO games all season) dispatched the 4 seeds – the LSU-SHREVEPORT PILOTS (Riverboat Pilots) 90-75.    ###    And the 2nd seeded LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS faced the 3rd seeded OUR LADY OF THE LAKE UNIVERSITY SAINTS and eliminated them in a close 71-65 game. 

MNUPioneersHEART OF AMERICA ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – SEMIFINALS – The MID-AMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS came in as the 1 seeds and polished off the 5th seeded GRACELAND UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS. The final score stood at Pioneers 81  Yellow Jackets 69.    ###    The second semifinal saw the 3rd seeded WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN manage a minor upset – taking down the 2 seeds – the PERU STATE BOBCATS – in a comfortable 97-79 affair.  

Middle Georgia State KnightsSOUTHERN STATES ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – SEMIFINALS – The 2nd seeded MIDDLE GEORGIA STATE KNIGHTS tangled with the 6 seeds – the AUBURN UNIVERSITY OF MONTGOMERY WARHAWKS (formerly the Senators) – and won by a score of 76-66.    ###    And the 5th seeded FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Furies) triumphed over the 8th seeded LOYOLA (New Orleans) UNIVERSITY WOLF PACK in a 74-69 Instant Classic.    

XAVIERLAGULF COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE – OPENING ROUND – The 4 seeds – the XAVIER (LA) UNIVERSITY GOLD RUSH – needed Overtime to do it, but they overcame the 5th seeded TOUGALOO COLLEGE BULLDOGS by a slim 94-92 margin    ###    Meanwhile the 2nd seeded DILLARD UNIVERSITY BLEU (sic) DEVILS manhandled the 7th seeded SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS KNIGHTS to the tune of 81-58    ###    And the (3) PHILANDER SMITH COLLEGE PANTHERS eliminated the (6) EDWARD WATERS COLLEGE TIGERS 86-66.  

*** USCAA DIVISION ONE ***

Oakwood AmbassadorsFIRST SEMIFINAL – The 5 seeds – the OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY AMBASSADORS – clashed with the top seeded ROCHESTER COLLEGE WARRIORS. The Ambassadors held a comfortable 39-24 advantage at Halftime but then had to hold on by their fingertips for the upset win as the Warriors’ rally fell just short. The final score was Oakwood 72  Rochester 69. Ronnie Abrams came off the bench for the Ambassadors and notched 24 points.

Concordia (AL) LogoSECOND SEMIFINAL – A milder upset followed, as the 3rd seeded CONCORDIA (AL) COLLEGE HORNETS took on the 2 seeds – the WASHINGTON ADVENTIST UNIVERSITY SHOCK. The Hornets had managed a tight 32-21 edge by the midpoint and got a tiny bit more separation in the 2nd Half for a 73-68 victory over the Shock. Joshua Stallworth’s 20 points led Concordia College. It will be the Ambassadors against the Hornets for the Division One title!  

Florida National University ConquistadorsCONSOLATION BRACKET – GAME ONE – The FLORIDA NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CONQUISTADORS – the 4 seeds in the Tournament – played the 8th seeded NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS. The Conquistadors took out their anger over their early exit from title contention on the Builders. Florida National University converted a 52-47 lead at the break into a Century Club- level 104-88 triumph. Yves Goedschalk led the Conquistadors with his 22 points.

Canton KangaroosCONSOLATION BRACKET – GAME TWO – This game set the 6 seeds – the SUNY-CANTON KANGAROOS – against the 7th seeded BEREA COLLEGE MOUNTAINEERS. The Kangaroos had trouble shaking the Mountaineers in the 1st Half and held just a 34-33 lead at the midpoint. In the 2nd Half SUNY-Canton got more and more separation for a 70-55 win. Romario Fletcher of the Kangaroos just missed a Double Double with 14 points and 9 rebounds.
