As the 2014 Iditarod Dog Sled Race continues I once again turn you over to my sister Rosemary Wozniak, Balladeer’s Blog’s Official Iditarod Correspondent. Take it away, Rose!
As I have mentioned on my Facebook Page, a woman has not won the Iditarod since 1990. I am hoping that this year one of the women mushers will win.
Today I am going to write about an Iditarod rookie…Katherine Keith.
According to her official biography on the Iditarod website Katherine, 35, was born in Minnesota and lived there until completing high school at which point Katherine decided that it was time to pursue her dream of going to Alaska.
She graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (GO, NANOOKS!) in 2008 with a degree in Renewable Energy Engineering. She went to Kotzebue to handle dogs and has lived there off and on ever since .
Katherine began racing dogs in 2011. She and “Arctic” John Baker raise and train over 50 dogs in Kotzebue and they also own a number of small businesses including Remote Solutions, LLC which allows them to help meet the needs of rural Alaska. She is also a proud parent of daughter Amelia who is 10 years old.
Hope everyone takes a look at the history behind the race and I hope you will come to love and enjoy it as much as I do.
