HORNET SPLIT – The NAIA’s unranked SOUTHERN POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY RUNNIN’ HORNETS split a double-header yesterday with the number 3 team in the nation, the FAULKNER EAGLES. In one game the Runnin’ Hornets came out on top by a score of 5-1 and in the other the Eagles won in a 4-0 shutout. It all made for a bittersweet Senior Day for the Faulkner faithful.
CHAR-BROILED MUSTANGS – The ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM took both games of their double-header against the 6th ranked MASTER’S MUSTANGS. Both games were absolute blowouts as the Firestorm singed the Mustangs 7-0 to start things off then incinerated them by a score of 13-3 in the second game. Though unranked in the NAIA poll Arizona Christian is number one in the NCCAA.
REINHARDT REJOICES – The 9th ranked defending champions, the TENNESSEE WESLEYAN COLLEGE BULLDOGS, fell in one of yesterday’s tightest and most thrilling games. The homestanding REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES toppled the defending champs in a nailbiting 5-4 affair.
WESTMONT RALLIES FOR A SPLIT – California’s WESTMONT COLLEGE WARRIORS faced the number 11 CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY AT SAN MARCOS COUGARS in a double-header yesterday. After a 5-1 loss to the visiting Cougars in the first game the Warriors dug deep and managed a 1-0 victory in the second contest to split the day’s games.
SUNS SHINE IN MISSISSIPPI – The FLORIDA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SUNS also managed a split against a ranked team yesterday. The NAIA’s 16th ranked WILLIAM CAREY CRUSADERS welcomed the Suns and found they had their hands full with a quality team. Florida Christian came out on top 4-2 in game one, while the Crusaders likewise doubled-up on the Suns in the second game, winning by a final score of 6-3. Florida Christian is ranked number 2 in the NCCAA2 poll.
BEN U PULLS THE UPSET – The number 17 LYON SCOTS were upset on the road yesterday by the unranked BENEDICTINE UNIVERSITY AT SPRINGFIELD BULLDOGS. The bats were on fire for both Ben U and Lyon but in the end the Bulldogs emerged with a hard-fought 12-10 victory over their ranked opponents.
THE DROVERS ARE ROAD WARRIORS – The UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND ARTS OF OKLAHOMA DROVERS took it on the road and won both games of their double-header against the ST GREGORY’S CAVALIERS. The Drovers won the first game by a score of 5-2 and then went on for a tight 6-5 victory in the closing game of the double-header.
AMU PICKS UP TWO – The AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES likewise took both games of their double-header against the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA-BEAUFORT SAND SHARKS. Both games were fairly comfortable wins for the Gyrenes, one more than the other. Ave Maria took one game by a score of 4-1 and the other by a much larger 7-2 tally.
DITTO – Other teams logging two victories in their double-headers yesterday were the LOURDES UNIVERSITY GRAY WOLVES, who beat the CONCORDIA (MI) CARDINALS 5-4 and 7-1. ### The EMMANUEL LIONS mauled the MOBILE RAMS by scores of 8-2 and 8-0. ### The VANGUARD LIONS edged the SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN EAGLES 2-1 in one game and 4-2 in the other. ### And the TALLADEGA TORNADOES won a 5-3 ball game and a 13-1 blowout over the TOUGALOO BULLDOGS.
EXTRA INNINGS – The MADONNA CRUSADERS won a 10-inning game against the visiting CORNERSTONE GOLDEN EAGLES by a score of 5-4. ### Also in 10 innings the MENLO OAKS fell to the CONCORDIA (OR) CAVALIERS 4-3. ### 10 innings was a popular length yesterday with the (16) UT-TYLER PATRIOTS winning 2-1 over the LETOURNEAU YELLOW JACKETS in 10. ### Likewise for the OBERLIN YEOMEN (5-4 over the ALLEGHENY GATORS) and the THOMAS MORE SAINTS (8-7 over the GROVE CITY WOLVERINES), all in 10 innings.
TWO GAMES IN ONE – It took EIGHTEEN INNINGS to decide a victor in yesterday’s clash between the DICKINSON RED DEVILS and the URSINUS BEARS. At long last the Red Devils emerged with a tight 3-2 victory in this Centennial Conference matchup. ### In 12 innings the ANDERSON RAVENS notched a big final frame to defeat the EARLHAM QUAKERS 8-2. ### In 11 innings the OCCIDENTAL TIGERS defeated the LA VERNE LEOPARDS by a score of 4-3. ### And in yet another 10 inning affair the GETTYSBURG BULLETS edged the WASHINGTON COLLEGE SHOREMEN 4-3.
SHUTOUTS – The PARK UNIVERSITY PIRATES utterly destroyed the HARRIS-STOWE HORNETS in a 15-0 shutout. ### The CUMBERLAND BULLDOGS blanked the visiting UVA-WISE HIGHLAND CAVALIERS by a score of 4-0. ### The FISHER COLLEGE (MA) FALCONS crushed the BRIARCLIFF CHARGERS in an 11-0 laughter. ### And the CENTENARY (NJ) CYCLONES blew away the ST JOSEPH’S (BROOKLYN) BEARS by a final score of 12-0.
