COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND OTHER TOURNAMENTS CONTINUE

The NAIA National Championship Tournament – THE OLDEST SUCH COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN THE COUNTRY – yes, you read that right – got underway yesterday.

College of the Ozarks BobcatsUPSETS – Round One’s upsets: The COLLEGE OF THE OZARKS BOBCATS always shine in prime time and last night was no exception. The Bobcats stunned the 3rd seeded NORTHWOOD (FL) SEAHAWKS in a 57-49 defensive masterpiece.   ###   The MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS eliminated the 8 seeds, the EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS, by a score of 77-53   ###   A battle of Panthers went into Overtime with the YORK PANTHERS eking out a 78-77 win over the DAVENPORT PANTHERS   ###   And ending a bad day for the WHAC, the 14th seeded MADONNA UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS fell to the SOUTHERN OREGON MOUNTAINEERS 83-66.

williampennStatesmenCHALK – The Top Seeded WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN had their hands full with the (BD) MCPHERSON BULLDOGS but prevailed in the end by a score of 71-65   ###   The BETHEL (IN) PILOTS eliminated the EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY EAGLES  in a 73-49 rout   ###   The INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST GRENADIERS edged the VALLEY CITY STATE VIKINGS  75-72   ###   And the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY SPIRES were bounced by the ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS in an 82-60 affair.

* NCCAA *        

Multnomah U LionsDAY TWO – On the 2nd day of the National Championship Tournament for the National Christian College Athletic Association Division Two the opening game saw both teams put up Century Club- level scores. The 9th seeded MULTNOMAH UNIVERSITY LIONS defeated the (12) CENTRAL BIBLE COLLEGE SPARTANS  124-106 in REGULATION!   ###   And the 6 seeds, the VALLEY FORGE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE PATRIOTS, were upset by the 10th seeded GRACE UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS in a 70-65 Instant Classic.

* NJCAA TOURNAMENTS *

North Platte KnightsREGION 9 – Late last night the NORTH PLATTE KNIGHTS faced the OTERO COLLEGE RATTLERS for the regional championship. In a hard-fought defensive struggle the Knights walked away with the region title by a final score of 51-46. Congratulations to North Platte!

South Georgia Tech JetsREGION 17 – In a 6 over 3 upset the SOUTH GEORGIA TECH JETS toppled the GORDON COLLEGE HIGHLANDERS  72-55   ###   Meanwhile the 7th seeded WAYCROSS COLLEGE SWAMP FOXES fell to the (2) CHATTAHOOCHEE TECH GOLDEN EAGLES  83-69   ###   The top seeded EAST GEORGIA COLLEGE BOBCATS took care of business by bouncing the 8th seeded CENTRAL GEORGIA TECH COUGARS  86-77   ###   And the (4) MIDDLE GEORGIA COLLEGE WARRIORS eliminated the (5) GEORGIA PERIMETER COLLEGE JAGUARS in a stifling 61-47 affair.

Snead State ParsonsREGION 22 – The (4N) SNEAD STATE PARSONS doubled up on the (5S) LURLEEN B WALLACE SAINTS in a 70-35 embarrassment   ###   The (6N) SOUTHERN UNION BISON upset the (3S) BISHOP STATE WILDCATS  89-78   ###   The (6S) ENTERPRISE STATE BOLL WEEVILS fell to the (3N) LAWSON STATE COUGARS by a score of 83-67   ###   And the (5N) HANCEVILLE LIONS won an 81-56 upset over the (4S) WALLACE COLLEGE- SELMA PATRIOTS.

Hesston College LarksREGION 206 – In a drama- heavy Overtime affair yesterday in this Region the HESSTON COLLEGE LARKS fell to the KANSAS CITY COLLEGE BLUE DEVILS. The final score in this hardcourt Armageddon was 85-74. The Blue Devils face the BROWN- MACKIE LIONS on Saturday for the regional title.

* CCCAA TOURNAMENTS *

Mount San Antonio College MountiesSOCAL REGION – The 3rd seeded MT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES triumphed over the 6th seeded COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS COUGARS by a score of 93-84   ###   The top seeded SADDLEBACK GAUCHOS advanced as well, winning a 56-46 defensive showdown with the (9) EAST LOS ANGELES HUSKIES   ###   Meanwhile the (12) PALOMAR COMETS were eliminated by the (4) CHAFFEY PANTHERS  82-67   ###   And the (10) SAN BERNARDINO WOLVERINES eked out a 58-56 victory over the (15) MT SAN JACINTO EAGLES.

Merritt College ThunderbirdsNORCAL REGION – In a colossal 15 seed over 7 seed upset the MERRITT COLLEGE THUNDERBIRDS edged the OHLONE RENEGADES  79-76   ###   The 4th seeded SANTA ROSA BEAR CUBS stymied the CABRILLO SEAHAWKS  65-44   ###   The (14) SAN JOAQUIN DELTA MUSTANGS upset the (11) WEST VALLEY VIKINGS by a score of 80-66   ###   And the 1 seeds, the SAN FRANCISCO CITY COLLEGE RAMS scored a Century Club- level 101 points to the 67 put up by the 9th seeded LASSEN COUGARS.
