NOTEWORTHY COLLEGE BASKETBALL AND HOCKEY RESULTS FROM JANUARY 26TH

Cumberlands PatriotsNUMBER THREE TAKES A FALL – The 25th ranked UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS hosted the number 3 team in the nation yesterday, the PIKEVILLE UNIVERSITY BEARS. In what turned out to be the game of the day the Patriots hung tough and won a 73-71 Instant Classic that may turn out to be the team’s signature win of the regular season.   ###   Meanwhile the WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY PIONEERS took on the 4th ranked JOHN BROWN UNIVERSITY GOLDEN EAGLES and came out on top by a score of 84-70.   ###   At number 8 the WILLIAM CAREY CRUSADERS fell on the road to the unranked AUBURN UNIVERSITY AT MONTGOMERY WARHAWKS in a 62-55 clash.   ###   The (18) ROGERS STATE UNIVERSITY HILLCATS joined the fad of ranked teams losing on the road yesterday. The Hillcats were toppled 69-65 by the ever-tough LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY CHAPARRALS.   ###   .. And the number 24 SHAWNEE STATE BEARS added some novelty by losing at home to the ST CATHARINE PATRIOTS in an 80-72 hardcourt epic.  

southeastern university fireTOP 25 UPSETS – NAIA DIVISION TWO – The SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FIRE brought down the number 4 ST THOMAS (FL) BOBCATS in a 60-58 game for the ages.   ###   The T12th ranked BETHEL (IN) PILOTS (riverboat pilots) fell on the road 85-79 to the unranked TAYLOR TROJANS.   ###   In a case of Tiger on Tiger violence the DAKOTA WESLEYAN TIGERS toppled the homestanding (T12) DOANE TIGERS by a score of 87-83.   ###   The COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES took it on the road and brought down the 15th ranked NORTHWEST (WA) EAGLES  84-72.   ###   … And the number 17 MADONNA CRUSADERS were defeated by the MARYGROVE COLLEGE MUSTANGS in a 64-57 road clash. 

WILLIAMS EPHSTOP 25 UPSETS – NCAA DIVISION 3 – The 3rd ranked MIDDELBURY PANTHERS were upset on the road by the number 9 WILLIAMS COLLEGE EPHS (pronounced “eephs”) in a nail-biting 64-63 Instant Classic.   ###   In an Overtime tussle the (25) WHEATON THUNDER defeated the visiting number 5 team the NORTH CENTRAL CARDINALS by a tight score of 71-69.   ###   Another ranked team lost in Overtime yesterday as the (22) OHIO WESLEYAN BATTLING BISHOPS fell on the road to the unranked DEPAUW TIGERS in a hard-fought 65-63 clash.

point universityCENTURY CLUB – The NAIA’s POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS put up 105 points against the visiting ST ANDREWS UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS, who managed just 69 points in this road loss.   ###   The (16) ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS mauled the visiting CALUMET COLLEGE CRIMSON WAVE by a score of 100-64.   ###   The MT MERCY MUSTANGS kicked around the AIB EAGLES in a 104-60 laugher.   ###   … And the GRINNELL PIONEERS who I still say should change their name to the Red Barons based on their logo, dismembered the LAKE FOREST FORESTERS by a score of 100-62. 

McDaniel Green TerrorMARATHON MEN – This week’s game that won the distinction of Marathon Game of the Week was the Triple Overtime affair between the MCDANIEL GREEN TERROR (logo at left) and the visiting WASHINGTON COLLEGE SHOREMEN. The Green Terror (Love that name!) emerged with a 95-87 victory.   ###   Meanwhile in Double Overtime the TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS played Road Warriors and topped the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES by a score of 85-81.   ###   … And in another Double Overtime clash the PHILANDER SMITH PANTHERS outlasted the FISK UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS  114-108.

The Bantams improve to 10-4-3 while the Lord Jeffs fall to 11-5-2.   ###   The unlucky number 13 MANHATTANVILLE VALIANTS fell on the road to the 4th ranked UTICA PIONEERS.   ###   The (6) OSWEGO STATE LAKERS took down the visiting (15) GENESEO STATE BLUE KNIGHTS in a 4-3 instant classic.   ###   … And the 14th ranked UMASS- BOSTON BEACONS welcomed the number 12 BABSON BEAVERS and fought them to a 2-2 tie in Overtime.

Wesleyan CardinalsBLOWOUTS – The WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY CARDINALS kicked butt on the road yesterday, annihilating the HAMILTON CONTINENTALS by an unbelievable score of 11-3. The Cardinals are now 9-7-2 and the Continentals are a dismal 5-10-3.   ###   The WILLIAMS COLLEGE EPHS notched a 5-0 road shutout over the CONNECTICUT COLLEGE CAMELS.   ###   … And the LAKE FOREST FORESTERS bigfooted the homestanding CONCORDIA (WI) FALCONS  5-1.
