COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF AND BOWL RESULTS: NOVEMBER 17TH, 2012

NCCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP – The Victory Bowl is the signature gridiron event each year in the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) with the winner being the national champion of the association. This year’s matchup was between the GREENVILLE COLLEGE PANTHERS (helmet at left) and the NORTHWESTERN (MN) COLLEGE EAGLES and was an Instant Classic. In overtime the Panthers emerged with a 28-27 victory. A missed extra point by the Eagles spelled the difference. Congratulations to Greenville College!

*****   NAIA PLAYOFFS   *****

UPSET IN GEORGETOWN – The NUMBER ONE TEAM in the nation, the undefeated GEORGETOWN (KY) TIGERS, suffered the upset of the First Round today at the hands of the BETHEL (TN) WILDCATS. Bethel defied all the odds and proved all the prognosticators wrong with a 45-44 victory over the Tigers in this undeniable Instant Classic.   ###   The SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS stormed into Davenport, IA to take on the ever-tough SAINT AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES and came away with an authoritative 45-28 upset win of their own.

BLOWOUTS – The ST XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS (helmet at left), the defending champions of NAIA football,  breezed through their First Round matchup, mauling the WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN by a score of 31-0.   ###   The UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS kicked around the MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS to the tune of 42-24.   ###   … And the MISSOURI VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS plundered and pillaged the OTTAWA (KS) BRAVES  56-21.

CLOSE GAMES – The MORNINGSIDE MUSTANGS (helmet at left) had more of a fight on their hands than they anticipated from the MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS. Morningside emerged with a tight 40-35 victory that may serve as a wakeup call.   ###   The ST FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS held on to win a 22-17 Instant Classic against the BAKER WILDCATS.   ###   … And the MARIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS brought an end to the 2012 season for the NORTHWESTERN (IA) RED RAIDERS by a score of 42-32.   

*****   NCAA DIVISION 2 PLAYOFFS   *****

MARATHON GAME OF THE DAY – This First Round matchup in D2 went to THREE OVERTIMES before a victor emerged. The MISSOURI WESTERN GRIFFONS (helmet at left) withstood an invasion from the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA AT DULUTH BULLDOGS, who won two D2 championships in recent years. The final score was Griffons  57, Bulldogs  55. 

UPSETS – The CHADRON STATE EAGLES came into today’s game as the 3 seed in Region 4. Their opponents were the region’s 6 seeds, the WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES. The Buffaloes (helmet at left) were pretty much having their way with Chadron State throughout the game, but the Eagles rallied late to provide a respectable final score of 38-30. This was the only upset in the D2 playoffs today.

REASONABLY CLOSE – The IUP CRIMSON HAWKS (helmet at left) won the only other close game of the day in D2, defeating the SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY RAMS  27-17.   ###   The INDIANAPOLIS GREYHOUNDS won a 31-14 battle with the MIDWESTERN STATE UNIVERSITY MUSTANGS.   ###   … And the LENOIR RHYNE BEARS pulled away from the FORT VALLEY STATE WILDCATS  21-6.     

BLOWOUTS – The storied NORTHWEST MISSOURI BEARCATS (helmet at left) destroyed the HARDING UNIVERSITY BISON by a score of 35-0.   ###   The SHIPPENSBURG RED RAIDERS keelhauled the BLOOMSBURG HUSKIES  58-20.   ###   … And the WEST ALABAMA TIGERS slashed the MILES GOLDEN BEARS to ribbons in a 41-7 rout.

*****   NCAA DIVISION 3 PLAYOFFS   *****

INSTANT CLASSICS – The LINFIELD COLLEGE WILDCATS (helmet at left) hosted the PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY LUTES and despite a 20-7 halftime lead wound up having to hold on tight for a 27-24 victory.   ###   The CORTLAND STATE RED DRAGONS eked out a 20-19 win over the visiting FRAMINGHAM STATE RAMS.   ###   … And the ROWAN PROFS decided not to wait until the title game for once to have a letdown, falling on the road to the SALISBURY UNIVERSITY SEAGULLS in a 17-9 grudge match.

UPSETS – The ELMHURST BLUE JAYS (helmet at left) managed a nailbiting 27-24 victory over the COE KOHAWKS.   ###   The BETHEL (MN) ROYALS notched a slender road win of their own over the CONCORDIA (Chicago) COUGARS  24-23.       ###   The FRANKLIN GRIZZLIES devoured the ADRIAN BULLDOGS by a score of 42-10.   ###   The CAL LUTHERAN KINGSMEN fell to the NORTH CENTRAL CARDINALS  41-21.   ###   … And the HEIDELBERG STUDENT PRINCES ended their season with a 52-38 upset loss to the storied WITTENBERG TIGERS.

BUTTKICKINGS – The MT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS crushed the CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS  72-14.   ###   The WESLEY WOLVERINES went them 1 point better, annihilating the MT IDA MUSTANGS  73-14.   ###   The MHBU CRUSADERS ran their swords through the LOUISIANA COLLEGE WILDCATS in a 59-20 trouncing.   ###   … And the OSHKOSH TITANS had their way with the SCHOLASTICA SAINTS  55-10.

MINOR BLOWOUTS – The ST THOMAS TOMMIES beheaded the ST NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS  48-17.   ###   The WASHINGTON & LEE GENERALS fell on the road to the HOBART STATESMEN by a score of 38-20.   ###   The WIDENER PRIDE brought down the BRIDGEWATER STATE BEARS  44-14.   ###    … And the JOHNS HOPKINS BLUE JAYS vetoed the title hopes of the WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON PRESIDENTS in a 42-10 laugher.

*****   SCFA PLAYOFFS   *****

SEMIFINALS – The SCFA incorporates its playoffs into its Bowl system and yesterday’s semifinals were a study in contrast. The National Bowl was the first semifinal and was a bruising edge-of- your-seat game as the MT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES (helmet at left), the defending SCFA champions, won a 12-7 game for the ages against the SADDLEBACK GAUCHOS. The second semifinal, the Beach Bowl, was a yawner and featured the BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES upsetting the VENTURA PIRATES in a 48-8 mangling.

The Mounties and the Renegades play for the SCFA title next Saturday. The winner advances to face the NCFA champion in the CCCAA title game on December 8th. The NCFA omits semifinals and skips straight to the championship game. Next week’s California College Bowl pits the CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO RAMS, the defending NCFA champs, against the AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS. 

*****   D3 BOWL GAMES   *****

INSTANT CLASSICS – The DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE AGGIES notched a tight 24-21 victory over the MUHLENBERG MULES.   ###   The FRANKLIN & MARSHALL DIPLOMATS fell to the ALBRIGHT COLLEGE LIONS in a nerve- wracking 38-34 affair.   ###   … And the WAYNESBURG YELLOW JACKETS won their Bowl matchup with the CARNEGIE MELLON TARTANS in a 28-24 game for the ages.

BOWL BLISTERINGS – In the Northwest Bowl the ST JOHN FISHER CARDINALS (helmet at left)  decimated the CASTLETON STATE SPARTANS by a score of 63-7.   ###   Meanwhile the SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE PRIDE mauled the ALFRED UNIVERSITY SAXONS  31-8.   ###   … And in their Bowl game the NORWICH CADETS got spanked 34-14 by the ENDICOTT GULLS.

*****   CCCAA BOWL GAMES   *****

 A DOUBLE SHOT OF THAT O.T. LOVE – The Patriotic Bowl was more of a black and blue affair than a red, white and blue one. The PIERCE COLLEGE BRAHMA BULLS and the MOUNT SAN JACINTO COLLEGE EAGLES went toe to toe and blow for blow through regulation and TWO OVERTIME PERIODS. The Brahma Bulls at last emerged with a 37-34 victory in this undeniable Instant Classic.

BOWL CLASSICS – Meanwhile, 4 more of the non-playoff Bowls in the CCCAA were also gridiron Armageddons. In the Southern California Bowl the SANTA ANA COLLEGE DONS (helmet at left) won a tight 22-21 contest against the COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS COUGARS.   ###   The DIABLO VALLEY VIKINGS won the East Bay Bowl by defeating the LANEY EAGLES  30-27.   ###   The Western State Bowl saw the FULLERTON COLLEGE HORNETS top the CITRUS OWLS by a score of 31-24.   ###   … And the SAN JOAQUIN DELTA MUSTANGS won a 63-56 shootout with the DE ANZA COLLEGE DONS in the Silicon Valley Bowl.

UNLUCKY FOURTEEN? – The Living Breath Foundation Bowl featured the CONTRA COSTA COMETS upset of the MONTEREY PENINSULA COLLEGE LOBOS  39-25.   ###   The BUTTE COLLEGE ROADRUNNERS, where Aaron Rodgers played his college ball before transferring to Cal, won the State Center Bowl 31-17 over the FRESNO CITY RAMS.   ###   … And the SOUTHWESTERN JAGUARS took down the SANTA MONICA COLLEGE CORSAIRS by a score of 45-31 in the American Championship Bowl.

VARYING DEGREES OF DOUBLE DIGITS – The RIVERSIDE COLLEGE TIGERS won the Golden State Bowl with a 34-23 win over the LOS ANGELES HARBOR SEAHAWKS.   ###   The CHABOT COLLEGE GLADIATORS fell 47-18 to the COLLEGE OF THE SISKIYOUS EAGLES in the Central Division Bowl.   ###   … And in the Bothman Bulldog Bowl the SAN MATEO COLLEGE BULLDOGS dismembered the SIERRA WOLVERINES by a score of 49-20.

  6. Great post! I never heard of the National Christian College Athletic Association before but I’d love for my kids to go to their colleges now!
