Comment: The Pioneers relaunched football just this year and already have a victory under their belts! They embraced the NAIA tradition of beating NCAA Division 3 teams to get a “W” in this inaugural season.
Women’s sports teams at WBU are called the Flying Queens and I’ve always felt that in order to match their school’s cool logo both their men’s and women’s teams should change their name to the Flying W’s. You can’t tell in this picture but the W has a feature similar to “flying” cattle brands so I figured Flying W’s would be entirely unique AND still retain that Texas feel!

I am the assistant director of alumni development at WBU. Thanks for taking interest in our University. This is our first football season in over 72 years! Big things are happening to our little University and its exciting to be part of it. We were actually originally the Wayland Jackrabbits and many wanted to go back to our roots and be the “Wayland Jackrabbits” but it just didnt stick and the majority wanted to keep the Pioneers as it was Dr Waylands pioneering spirit that brought him to the high plains where he established our beloved school. The Flying Queens (who still hold the record for most winningest womens basketball team in history with 131 consecutive wins). They were called the flying queens because Claude Hutcherson of Hutcherson Air Service used to fly the queens to all their away games.
