KANAJUK – This god was the giant sea scorpion who was the husband Sedna shared with her armless mother, Isarrataitsoq. Kanajuk often stood guard on the roof of Sedna’s subaquatic dwelling and was one of the menaces a shaman had to face when journeying to see the sea goddess in their astral body. Added fun comes from the fact that his name sounds like a cop show. (“Tonight on Kanajuk!”)

He sounds very cool to me. There nothing like a good body guard to watch over a defenceless woman. Well… ok she was far from defencless but still. Cool.
defenceless, armless. See? They seem somewhat similar. I really like these inuits. I’d like to find a childrens story book of their myths some day.
Well, you could say Isarrataitsoq was an “unarmed” woman.
There’s a book called just Inuit Myths which is for children – I think Amazon.com has it.
I’ll look for it. I just got a cd of Inuit tribal music. It’s rather strange, but good at the same time.
Love the mythology…especially the Inuit myths. I think I was an Inuit in a previous life. 🙂
Ha! Could be! And the moon god would have brought your soul back down to Earth in his celestial dog sled.
mother and daughter had to share a sea scorpion – that’s messed up
Yup. A menage -a- trois even Jerry Springer would find unappetizing.
Hi, Ed, nice one…I’d forgotten how weird these guys were…I know I’ve been a stranger for a while, but please bear with me a bit loger. Tomorrow we’ll be off for out last holiday this summer, and things should be back to normal when we get back 🙂
P.S. I’ve passed on a challenge to you and I’m dying to see what you do with it 😉 See details in yesterday’s post. 😉
Have a good trip! It was very nice to include me in that challenge! I’ve been having very very sparse internet access following the hurricane so I’m falling behind on truly new posts and being able to comment at you guys’ blogs, too, so I hope all of you will please bear with me, too.
Never heard of sea scorpions but so far this is my favorite inuit god!

I’m really into the oddball topics you cover.
I’m glad to hear it!
Some wedding dress designers develop historical themed gowns in Gothic, Medieval
and a lot of far more historical types which are unique and fascinating.
While purchasing your bridal dress, it is something that
makes sense. The perfect location, perfect man as well as your perfect dress, there might be anything you could
have desired for.
