March 7th, 1643 – Queen Henrietta Marie, the self-styled “She- Majesty, La Generalissima”, and her caravan of supplies and mercenaries for King Charles I arrived at York from Bridlington. In York, she was a guest of William Cavendish, the Earl of Newcastle, and her presence was a morale booster to the Royalist troops in the city since she often rode openly through the streets, stopping to chat with many of the fighting men. While in York she also proved essential to ensuring the defection of Sir Hugh Cholmley to the Royalist side. Cholmley brought with him virtually his entire squadron from Scarborough as well as a ship full of supplies the Parliamentarian quartermaster’s office had just dispatched to him.
