February 27th, 1643 – Major General Thomas Ballard and his 6,000 Lincolnshire Parliamentarians, augmented by a force of 700 from Nottingham, arrive before Newark, intent on taking the city. The Royalist commander at Newark, Sir John Henderson, fights a delaying action and retires inside the city. Later, leading a counter- charge from inside the town, Henderson decisively repulses Ballard’s army, which withdraws from the area. Newark was of vital importance to the Royalists as a crucial link in keeping open communication between Oxford, the Royalist capital during the war, and Newcastle’s army in the Northern Theater of the war. Newcastle also shrewdly used Newark as a base of operations against Parliamentarian forces in the Midlands and Lincolnshire.

Really interesting conflict. I never realized this war was when England stopped being an absolute monarchy and became a constitutional monarchy instead.
