BALLADEER’S BLOG – COLLEGE FOOTBALL (NOV 3rd)

HEADLINES

KNOCKING OFF NUMBER ONE – For the THIRD week in a row the number one team in NCAA Division Two was upset. The UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES visited the (1) PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS. The Mules kicked the Gorillas in the teeth, leading them 24-10 at Halftime before consummating the Upset 37-13.

“THAT WAS NUMBER FIIIVE!” – Staying in D2 for a moment, the SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM took it on the road against the country’s 5th ranked OUACHITA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY TIGERS. The Tigers led 7-3, 10-6 and 17-9 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters, respectively. In the 4th, the Crimson Storm toppled OBU 18-17.

NUMBER SEVEN TAKES A FALL – In the NAIA the 12th ranked MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS welcomed the number 7 team in the nation – the BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS. A 10-7 Ravens lead in the 1st became a 24-24 tie by the Half. In the 3rd the Pioneers went up 27-24 and an explosive 4th Quarter saw MNU edge BC 48-47. Continue reading

NEW WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LEAGUE: TEAM NAMES ANNOUNCED

unrivaled logo“UNRIVALED” is the name of the brand-new Women’s Basketball league set to tip off in January of 2025. WNBA stars like Napheesa Collier are running the league and some other big-name WNBA players have already been signed. CAITLIN CLARK is being wooed with a fat contract but has not yet committed.

SOME BULLET POINTS

*** UNRIVALED will play during the WNBA’s offseason.

*** UNRIVALED will play 3 on 3 basketball: 3 starters and 2 alternates, giving each of the teams 5 players for now. Future expansion is possible. 

*** UNRIVALED will abide by Half-Court play rules like in Street Ball.

*** UNRIVALED is starting with 6 franchises, all of them playing in Miami until contracts with individual cities can be negotiated.

*** UNRIVALED would not have been MY first choice for a league name, but what do I know?

NEW SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ADDING FOOTBALL IN 2025

The New South Athletic Conference has finalized arrangements to add football for the 2025-2026 season. Seven of the conference’s twelve teams are on board for NSAC football.

WNBA FINALS: GAME FIVE

LIBERTY VS LYNX: GAME FIVE – The NEW YORK LIBERTY hosted the MINNESOTA LYNX as this series went the full five games.

Minnesota was out in front 19-10 in the opening Quarter and 34-27 by Halftime. The Liberty made its move in the 3rd Quarter, which ended with them up 47-44. The Lynx forced Overtime with a 60-60 tie to end Regulation. Continue reading

WNBA FINALS: GAME FOUR

LYNX VS LIBERTY: GAME FOUR – In this 4th game of the best of 5 series, the MINNESOTA LYNX welcomed the NEW YORK LIBERTY.

The Lynx were fighting to stave off elimination as the 1st Quarter ended in a 23-23 tie and the arrival of Halftime saw Minnesota clinging to a mere 46-45 edge over the Liberty. Continue reading

WNBA FINALS: GAME THREE

LIBERTY VS LYNX: GAME THREE – The NEW YORK LIBERTY visited the MINNESOTA LYNX as this best of five series stood at 1 game apiece.

The 1st Quarter ended with Minnesota up 28-18 and Halftime found the Liberty within 43-35. To close out the 3rd Quarter, New York still trailed the Lynx but had made it a one-point game – 62-61.  Continue reading

WNBA FINALS: GAME TWO

new york libertyLIBERTY VS LYNX: GAME TWO – The NEW YORK LIBERTY took the court against the visiting MINNESOTA LYNX, who held a 1-0 advantage in this best of 5 finals series.

The Liberty were all business yesterday, leading Minnesota 31-21 to end the opening Quarter and 49-39 come Halftime. In the 3rd Quarter the Lynx slightly nibbled at New York’s lead, pulling to within 61-53. Continue reading

WNBA FINALS GAME ONE

Last night the first game in the best of five Finals series in the WNBA tipped off.

LYNX VS LIBERTY: GAME ONE – The MINNESOTA LYNX visited the NEW YORK LIBERTY to get the Finals started.

The Liberty grabbed a sizable 32-19 lead in the 1st Quarter, then spent the rest of the game watching it melt away. By Halftime the Lynx had cut New York’s advantage to 44-36 and 68-61 to end the 3rd Quarter. Minnesota forced Overtime with an 84-84 tie. Continue reading

WNBA: DEFENDING CHAMPS SENT HOME, ONLY ONE SEMIFINAL SERIES REMAINS

LIBERTY VS ACES: GAME FOUR – The NEW YORK LIBERTY were on the road against the WNBA’s two-time defending national champions – the LAS VEGAS ACES.

A 23-19 1st Quarter edge for the Liberty became 41-38 by Halftime. The Aces pulled even closer to end the 3rd Quarter facing a mere 53-51 deficit, but in the 4th New York exploded for 23 points and a 76-62 victory. The Liberty won the series 3 games to 1. Twenty-two points from Sabrina Ionescu led New York, and her teammate Breanna Stewart logged a Double Double of 19 points and 14 rebounds.    Continue reading

BALLADEER’S BLOG: COLLEGE FOOTBALL OCTOBER SIXTH

HEADLINES

DOWN GOES NUMBER TWO – In the NAIA the CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS visited the number 2 team in the nation – the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS. A 7-0 1st Quarter lead for the Red Raiders turned into a 7-7 tie by Halftime. From there the Bulldogs outscored Northwestern College 22-10 to win this Upset 29-17.

KNOCKING OFF NUMBER FOUR – Over in NCAA Division Two the UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS COUGARS took it on the road against the 4th ranked MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS. At the Half the Cougars led 23-9, but the Mavericks cut that to a 30-23 edge in the 3rd Quarter. USF finalized the Upset in the 4th 40-36.    Continue reading
