PART 2 – COLLEGE BASKETBALL EXTRAVAGANZA

Each day this week I’ll be taking a quick look at the teams my readers e-mail me about the most. Beginning next week Balladeer’s Blog will hunker down and specifically address the standings in each division. I’m going alphabetically with the teams I’m examining so we resume where we left off yesterday.

FLORIDA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SUNS – MEN – The men’s team started out hot and were 5-2 at one point but have now lost their last four in a row. How- EVAH, as Stephen A Smith would say, two of those losses were to D1 and D2 teams (Bethune- Cookman and Northwood) and the rest of their schedule is fairly sane so look for them to bounce back.  They see action again January 6th in the Piedmont Tournament, hosted by the Piedmont Baptist Continue reading

COLLEGE BASKETBALL EXTRAVAGANZA 1

With many schools on Christmas break now Balladeer’s Blog will be taking a look at the overall hoops picture in the divisions I cover. Since I’m all about my readers I’ll be starting with an alphabetical look at the teams I get the most e-mail on, then after that I’ll address the Top 25 in each division. This will be a multi-part extravaganza so you’ll want to check back every day this week for each part.

ACADEMY OF ART URBAN KNIGHTS – MEN – The men’s team is currently 3-5. They’ve played no conference games yet.   The wins came over Upper Iowa, Menlo and Bethany (CA). Their next game is December 29th against Cal Maritime.  WOMEN – The women’s team is currently 2-6. They too have not begun their conference slate yet. Their wins came over Corban and Cal State East Bay. Their next Continue reading

NAIA COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS TO PLAY THE NCAA DIVISION 3 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS …

… In a contest here at Balladeer’s Blog. Since I covered the rivalry between the NAIA and D3 throughout the college football season I figured each year from now on I’d allow my readers to vote on who would win a game played between the champions of each division. Yesterday the championship games were held so this inaugural “BALLADEER’S  BOWL” will be played between the NAIA’s CC Fighting Saints and  D3’s  UWW Warhawks. Just like in the voting in my Top 20 contests  cast your vote for the team of your choice by e-mailing me at Thtcom15@aol.com . I’ll announce the winner on Christmas Eve.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME RESULTS: DECEMBER 18TH

YOU DON’T MESS WITH DESTINY – Well, those people who were calling the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs this year’s Team Of Destiny in NCAA Division 2 football turned out to be right, as UMD defeated the self-destructing Delta State Statesmen 20-17. The game was knotted up at 17 late in the 4th quarter and looked sure to be headed for overtime but an interception thrown by Statesmen QB Micah Davis allowed the Bulldogs to set up shop in good Continue reading

LET’S TRY THIS AGAIN: ANOTHER SPORTSCASTER NEEDS ENLIGHTENED

I once again heard a nationwide sports radio figure pushing the wide-spread misconception that a football playoff in Division 1A (Or Bowl Subdivision if you prefer) would take the top 8 teams in the rankings. For my post where I refuted that and other mistaken notions about a 1A football playoff click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/11/23/i-love-having-playoffs-in-the-divisions-i-cover-but-1a-playoff-advocates-need-to-learn-a-few-things/

LMU RAILSPLITTERS MEN’S BASKETBALL UNBEATEN AS WE GO INTO THE HOLIDAY BREAK

HARROGATE, TN – On Tuesday night in the Railsplitter men’s basketball team’s 96-84 victory over conference opponent Catawba College, Lincoln Memorial University forward D’Mario Curry (Detroit, MI) reached a milestone when he scored a personal best 41 points to push his career total over the 1000 point mark and to set a new Turner Arena single-game scoring record.

AND THE OSU-MARION SCARLET WAVE COMES IN AT NUMBER ONE!

The votes for my latest Top 20 contest have all been counted and the winner of the designation “Coolest-Named USCAA and NCCAA Sports Team” is the Ohio State-Marion Scarlet Wave! The name certainly is pretty cool and that logo is very eye-catching! If you want to follow Scarlet Wave sports just go here: http://osumarion.osu.edu/ScarletWave/

In second place were the New Hampshire Technical Institute Lynx. Once again it seems impossible to separate a cool name from a cool logo and you can’t help wondering how much carry over votes each one brings the other. To follow the Lynx sports teams click here: http://www.nhti.edu/campuslife/athletics.html

For the first time in Balladeer’s Blog’s history (a whopping 6 months I grant you, but still … ) the voting in a Top 20 List has resulted in a 3-way tie for 3rd place. Here are the 3 schools in alphabetical order:

The Lincoln Christian University Red Lions start us off with their snazzy logo and their memorable nickname. To beard these Lions in their den go here: http://www.lincolnchristian.edu/athletics/

Next we have the Maine-Augusta Moose, in whose honor I’ll throw out a new marketing slogan – “Moose: It’s singular AND plural!” (Well it’s better than my first one – “Moose: It’s what’s for dinner!” ) To follow these teams whose marching band should play the Bullwinkle theme music go here: http://www.uma.edu/athletics.html

We close with the Ozark Christian College Ambassadors and you have got to love the poetic coolness of their name as well as the fairly awesome logo that they sport. Who wouldn’t  want to go play for their teams or at least attend the games so you can hear announcers say things like “And the Ambassadors negotiate their way into the lead” or other related phrases? To follow their teams go here: http://occ.edu/students/default.aspx?id=90

Honorable mention goes to the Piedmont Baptist Conquerors, who were just 4 votes behind LCU, UMA and OCC. To view the entire list and see who you think got robbed click here: https://glitternight.com/2010/11/24/the-20-coolest-named-uscaa-and-nccaa-sports-teams/
