Comment: Kudos to the folks at this institution for showing some creativity with the name of their sports teams! The Vanguards definitely stand out and their logo is very, very eye-catching!

Location: Worcester, MA

Comment: Quinsigamond is a mouthful, no doubt about it, and when you combine that memorable school name with the memorable team name Wyverns you have got the kind of magic that Balladeer’s Blog loves!

Location: Bay Minette, AL 

Comment: With a nickname as cool as Sun Chiefs and with a logo that is as eye-catching as this one I can only hope that this college adds football at some point in the future.

TWENTY COOL-NAMED NCCAA COLLEGE SPORTS TEAMS

Another Balladeer’s Blog Top Twenty list for 2020. Previously I featured cool-named college sports teams from the NAIA and USCAA. This time it’s 20 cool-named teams from the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association).

Yellowstone Christian College Centurions 2YELLOWSTONE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE CENTURIONS

Location: Billings, MT  

Comment: “Thwow him to the GWOUND, thentuwion!” Had to be said, for the sake of all us Monty Python fans. Joking aside, Centurions is a terrific and almost unique team name in college sports.

saint katherine firebirdsUNIVERSITY OF SAINT KATHERINE FIREBIRDS

Location: San Marcos, CA

Comment: These teams were named after the Doug McClure post-apocalypse movie Firebird: 2015 AD. I’m KIDDING! They were named after the legendary firebirds themselves. 

Nebraska Christian College SentinelsNEBRASKA CHRISTIAN COLLEGE SENTINELS

Location: Papillion, NE

Comment: The Sentinels have got it going on! So does their institution, which has a knack for unique and memorable team names. Prior to going by Sentinels NCC’s teams were called the Parsons.

Moody BIble Institute Archers bigMOODY BIBLE INSTITUTE ARCHERS

Location: Chicago, IL

Comment: Set your Mood Rings to “contemplative!” This team name comes from the school’s reference to their famous Arch, NOT to people who wield a bow and arrows, but that’s a common misconception. Continue reading →

Comment: Sure, some people may have gone with Webslingers or even Webbslingers for this team but that would not be true to Webb Institute’s location and lore.

Comment: Herons are similar to storks and ibises and dwell on every continent except Antarctica. Their coolness factor and obvious adaptability make them an ideal mascot for a college’s athletic teams!

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Comment: The team name Cannoneers all by itself would put Pratt Institute on this list but when you throw in that terrific logo at left it takes everything to the next level.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE PILGRIMS: COOL-NAMED SPORTS TEAM FOR THANKSGIVING

new england college pilgrimsThanksgiving Week continues! I’m sure we all remember how the Pilgrims of the 1600s fled England to escape persecution for their horribly malformed faces (see left).

William Bradford sought out Professor Charles Xavier and together the two men parted the waters of the Atlantic Ocean so that Puritan Mutants could make their Exodus and walk all the way to the New World.

Upon arrival, Xavier decided to lie and say that he and his fellow Pilgrims had reached Plymouth Rock. This was not true, of course, but even then Charles Xavier was a pathological liar.   Continue reading →
