HEADLINES

KNOCKING OFF NUMBER ONE – For the THIRD week in a row the number one team in NCAA Division Two was upset. The UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI MULES visited the (1) PITTSBURG (KS) STATE GORILLAS. The Mules kicked the Gorillas in the teeth, leading them 24-10 at Halftime before consummating the Upset 37-13.

“THAT WAS NUMBER FIIIVE!” – Staying in D2 for a moment, the SOUTHERN NAZARENE UNIVERSITY CRIMSON STORM took it on the road against the country’s 5th ranked OUACHITA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY TIGERS. The Tigers led 7-3, 10-6 and 17-9 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters, respectively. In the 4th, the Crimson Storm toppled OBU 18-17.

NUMBER SEVEN TAKES A FALL – In the NAIA the 12th ranked MIDAMERICA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY PIONEERS welcomed the number 7 team in the nation – the BENEDICTINE COLLEGE RAVENS. A 10-7 Ravens lead in the 1st became a 24-24 tie by the Half. In the 3rd the Pioneers went up 27-24 and an explosive 4th Quarter saw MNU edge BC 48-47.

TEN OVER EIGHT – In this game D2’s 10th ranked COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES traveled to face the country’s number 8 WESTERN COLORADO UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERS. By the midpoint, the Thunder Wolves put Western Colorado on Upset Alert with their 24-14 advantage, and from there each team exchanged point for point in a 44-34 win for CSU-Pueblo.

BLACKJACK – This gridiron grudge match saw the NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE SCHOOL BUILDERS (Shipbuilders) take it on the road against the HOCKING COLLEGE HAWKS. It was the very first time these two college football programs were facing each other but they delivered an Instant Classic. The Builders snuck past their hosts 21-20.

CHARGING UP – The storied HILLSDALE COLLEGE CHARGERS played host to the THOMAS MORE UNIVERSITY SAINTS. The Chargers parlayed their 14-0 1st Quarter lead over their opponents into a 28-10 advantage at Halftime. After the break, Hillsdale College coasted to a 38-17 triumph over the Saints.

NUMBER FOUR TOPPLED – Way down in the CCCAA the 18th ranked BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE RENEGADES took the field against the visiting number 4 VENTURA COLLEGE PIRATES. The Renegades were up 21-17 at the Half, then managed to put more and more separation between themselves and the Pirates for a 45-27 victory.

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The MCPHERSON COLLEGE BULLDOGS (should be Mastiffs) were on the road against the (16) EVANGEL UNIVERSITY VALOR and defeated them 34-27   ###   Next, the U OF ST. FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS downed the (19) U OF ST. F (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS 28-20   ###   The LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS won 20-17 at the (22) CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY PHOENIX   ###   And the EASTERN OREGON U. MOUNTAINEERS beat the (24) COLLEGE OF IDAHO COYOTES 30-24.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ? – This game featured the GRACELAND UNIVERSITY YELLOW JACKETS against the visiting ST. AMBROSE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BEES. The Yellow Jackets were on top 14-3 in the opening Quarter and 21-10 by Halftime. That became a 28-17 advantage to end the 3rd Quarter before Graceland held on for a 28-23 victory.

ALL NAME GAMES – The SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE MOUNDBUILDERS obliterated the BETHANY COLLEGE SWEDES 62-7   ###   Meanwhile, the (13) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS won 56-24 at the ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM   ###   The AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES crushed the WARNER UNIVERSITY ROYALS 44-7   ###   And the DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS won 35-30 at the UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES.  

HAPPY HOMECOMING – The POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS welcomed their Homecoming opponents the UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie turned into a 20-7 Skyhawks lead at the Half. The Bears went up 21-20 in the 3rd Quarter but the 4th ended in a 23-21 triumph for Point University.

BLOWOUT TO SQUEAKER – The DAKOTA WESLYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Blue Tigers) tripled up on their hosts the WALDORF UNIVERSITY WARRIORS 42-14    ###    And in the squeaker portion of this entry, the MOUNT MARTY UNIVERSITY LANCERS survived a 28-27 visit from the MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS.

NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association)

WINDY – The GENEVA COLLEGE GOLDEN TORNADOES traveled to face the BETHANY COLLEGE BISON. The Golden Tornadoes held a 7-6 edge to end the 1st Quarter, but things were knotted up 20-20 come Halftime. In the 3rd Quarter Geneva College went out in front of the Bison 34-27 and that wound up as the final score, too.

KNIGHT MOVES – This game pitted the KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS against the visiting ST. ANDREW’S UNIVERSITY KNIGHTS. The opening Quarter ended with KCU on top 23-13 and that’s as close as SAU got. From there Kentucky Christian put up points at will on their way to an EIGHTY-FIVE to TWENTY-SIX massacre. 

“COURTESY OF THE FORT LAUDERDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE” – That’s my favorite weirdass title of an Elvis Presley song and it fits this occasion. The UNIVERSITY OF FT. LAUDERDALE EAGLES (should be Flamingos) took it on the road against the JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN THUNDER. Ft. Lauderdale dominated on both sides of the ball for a 51-13 win.

ONE-POINT WONDER – The STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS visited the UNIVERSITY OF ST. MARY SPIRES. The Spires were in control 16-7 in the 1st Quarter and 22-7 when Halftime rolled around. From there the Warriors came roaring back, pulling to within 22-19 in the 3rd Quarter and winning out 26-25 in the 4th.

NCAA DIVISION TWO

OTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The FORT HAYS STATE TIGERS won 36-7 at the 13th ranked EMPORIA STATE HORNETS   ###   Elsewhere, the WINGATE BULLDOGS downed their hosts the number 16 LENOIR-RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS 14-10   ###   And the FAYETTEVILL STATE BRONCOS triumphed 27-0 at the 19th ranked JOHNSON C. SMITH UNIVERSITY GOLDEN BULLS. 

NAIL-BITER – In this game the UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA-KEARNEY LOPERS paid a visit to the WASHBURN UNIVERSITY ICHABODS. In this very odd game the Ichabods led 6-0 in the opening Quarter and 13-0 at the Half. The Lopers didn’t get on the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter, but when they did they won the game 14-13.

HOME AND AWAY – Away: the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS wound up winning 24-7 at the CHADRON STATE EAGLES   ###   And the PACE UNIVERSITY SETTERS (Irish Setters) edged the home standing SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE OWLS 39-35   ###   Home: the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS snagged a 24-20 triumph over the OKLAHOMA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BISON.   

A DOUBLE SHOT OF THAT O.T. LOVE – The BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY HUSKIES were on the road against the SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY RAMS. A 7-7 Halftime tie became a 14-14 deadlock to end the 4th Quarter. The 1st Overtime ended with everything knotted up at 21-21, but in the 2nd the Huskies emerged with a 27-21 victory.

NCAA DIVISION THREE

UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The only Upset in the D3 rankings this weekend came in the game between the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT WHITEWATER WARHAWKS and their guests the number 21 UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT RIVER FALLS FALCONS. A scoreless opening Quarter was followed by a 13-0 Warhawks lead at the Half. From there, UW-Whitewater survived 13-7. 

ROAD RAGE – The WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE ENGINEERS clobbered the COAST GUARD ACADEMY BEARS 38-14   ###   Meanwhile, the ITHACA COLLEGE BOMBERS registered a 24-0 shut out of the UNION COLLEGE GARNET CHARGERS   ###   And the ST. NORBERT COLLEGE GREEN KNIGHTS beat the WISCONSIN LUTHERAN COLLEGE WARRIORS 55-7.

DOUBLE OVERTIME DUD – Points didn’t exactly fly like shrapnel in this clash between the ROWAN UNIVERSITY PROFS and the visiting MONTCLAIR STATE REDHAWKS. Neither team scored in the entire 1st Half. The 4th Quarter ended in a 10-10 tie but the offenses stumbled again with no change in the score during the 1st OT. Finally, the Profs managed a 16-10 victory in the 2nd OT. 

Pomona Pitzer SagehensUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The POMONA-PITZER COLLEGE SAGEHENS survived a 32-27 visit from the CAL LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY KINGSMEN   ###   Elsewhere, the HAMLINE UNIVERSITY PIPERS won a 37-35 affair at the MACALESTER COLLEGE SCOTS   ###   And the NORTH CAROLINA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BISHOPS won 23-21 at the GREENSBORO COLLEGE PRIDE.

NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association)

ONE AND TWO ROLL – The number 1 team in the nation – the IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS – manhandled their guests the BUTLER (KS) COLLEGE GRIZZLIES 48-7    ###    Meanwhile, the 2nd ranked GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS were less than gracious hosts to the CLAYTON STATE LAKERS, whom they eviscerated SEVENTY-SIX to NOTHING.

MILITARY AND FIRST RESPONDERS DAY – The honorees were treated to a tight game between the 13th ranked COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS and the visiting number 15 DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS. By Halftime the Red Ravens held a 13-0 advantage. After the break, the Conquistadors rallied but fell just short as Coffeyville won out by a polo score of 13-12.

ROAD WARRIORS – The (6) SNOW COLLEGE BADGERS played the NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE BRONCOS (should be the Cavalry) and nearly doubled-up on them 35-18   ###   The SUSSEX COUNTY COLLEGE SKYLANDERS won 25-18 at the ERIE COLLEGE KATS   ###   And the IOWA CENTRAL COLLEGE TRITONS defeated the INDEPENDENCE COLLEGE PIRATES 20-10.   

CATFIGHT – This game pitted the JONES COLLEGE BOBCATS against the home standing PEARL RIVER COLLEGE WILDCATS. The opening Half was a defensive epic, with the Bobcats leading by a mere 3-0 at its close. After the break, Jones College outscored the Wildcats 13-10 to go back home with a 16-10 victory.

CCCAA (California Community College Athletic Association)

PUTTING IN OVERTIME – The (11) AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS welcomed the (20) SIERRA COLLEGE WOLVERINES yesterday and outlasted them for a 44-41 OT win    ###    And the (17) FOOTHILL COLLEGE OWLS needed an extra session against their guests the (22) DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS (should be Green Devils). The Owls won 30-27.

RUSTLING UP A ROAD WIN – In this game the (5) GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE RUSTLERS traveled to take on the (15) LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE VIKINGS (should be Beachcombers). The Rustlers were up 7-0 in the 1st Quarter and 10-3 at Halftime. From there each team added 21 points to their tally as Golden West College triumphed 31-24.

COOLER TEAM NAMES FTW – The SANTA MONICA COLLEGE CORSAIRS hosted the GLENDALE COLLEGE VAQUEROS and annihilated them 50-14   ###   Next, the LOS ANGELES VALLEY COLLEGE MONARCHS won 20-12 at the PIERCE COLLEGE BRAHMA BULLS   ###   And the SANTA ANA COLLEGE DONS dispatched the WEST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE WILDCATS 37-16.

DOUBLING UP ON THE COMPETITION – The (12) COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS GIANTS (should be Redwoods) did battle with the visiting REEDLEY COLLEGE TIGERS. By Halftime the Giants were out in front of Reedley College 13-3. In the 2nd Half the College of the Sequoias pulled further and further away from the Tigers for a 34-17 victory.
