Here’s Independent Voter site Balladeer’s Blog‘s semi-annual post regarding the 9-11 tragedy. My thoughts are with the victims and their survivors, of course, but no words are adequate to address their grief or the grief of our nation. This post contemplates an alternate world where the September 11th, 2001 attacks were stopped in time.
A few decades ago a big deal was made over whether or not the 9-11 attacks could have been prevented by greater coordination between elements of the forever corrupt and often inept intelligence community. Amid the predictable partisan bickering and childish finger- pointing that characterized the 9-11 Commission and its findings an important consideration was overlooked.
That consideration was how events would have unfolded if the attacks had actually been thwarted. Let’s ponder both the Democrat foolishness and the Republican foolishness that would have followed the 9-11 attacks being stopped way back in 2001 with the political parties being as they were then.
THE DEMOCRAT FOOLISHNESS –
*** Democrats always feel that the only officially “intellectual” thing to do is to take sides against one’s own country no matter what the situation is. I agree there are plenty of times when reasonable people WILL take sides against their own country, but with American Democrats the rest of us have learned to just yawn and listen with amusement while they twist logic as severely as they have to in order to stick to their apparent loyalty to “everyone who hates America, right or wrong.”
*** The sheer unlikelihood of the 9-11 attacks would have served as the springboard for the Democrats’ attack on the opposition party’s intelligence services foiling those attacks. (And remember, I despise George W Bush, so this is NOT a defense of him.)
*** Democrats would have scoffed at the notion that the attacks could have ever succeeded. They would have ridiculed that possibility and made remarks like: “So the Bush administration would have us believe that this perfectly charming Mr Mohamed Atta and his friends would have succeeded in multiple plane hijackings and then, with the minimal pilot training they had, manage to fly those planes with pinpoint accuracy into the World Trade Center towers! Where- EVER does that cowboy in the White House get such notions?”
*** The default argument of all Democrats is that the only people in the world that are irredeemably evil are Americans and they feel it is bigotry to ever suspect anyone else of any ugly intentions. They would have insisted the intelligence services nabbed Atta and his accomplices based solely on “xenophobic” or “racist” or “Islamophobic” assumptions. They’d have insisted it was “A Sacco and Vanzetti story for the 21st Century.”
(By the way, if you’re not sure if you’re a Democrat or not here’s a quick guide: If you’re condescendingly assuming that other people won’t understand the Sacco and Vanzetti reference then you just might be a Democrat!)
*** Democrats would have also launched a whole “Free Mohamed Atta” movement and, given the general ineptitude (and worse) of the Bush administration probably would have gotten Atta and his fellow conspirators acquitted.
*** Atta would then have gotten a job as a radio host on Air America, ensuring that absolutely nobody would ever hear from him again.
*** Inevitably the same organizations that Atta and his playmates belonged to would have put together a deadly attack that DID succeed like the 9-11 attacks did in real life. Democrats would then have insisted that it was America’s “bigoted” treatment of Mohamed Atta and company that was the SOLE motive behind the attacks and that Americans “brought it all on themselves.” Just like they’ve been doing in real life ever since the actual 9-11 attacks.
THE REPUBLICAN FOOLISHNESS –

The arrogant George Bush Jr. killed the innocents and left the guilty. He fought Iraq and left those living in Afghanistan who were basically trained in America. He could have arrested them, but he wanted it to be a war against the Arabs and Islam under the pretext of terrorism. He entered a battle that I think is lost. In fact, it is actually lost. Greetings, Brother Balladeer. Good luck and a happy day for you always.
I appreciate your feelings on this and I agree, George W. Bush monumentally failed overseas and seized on the attacks to increase government surveillance of everyday Americans. Good luck to you, too.
Thank you very much for your patience, and I wish the American people all stability and you as well
Thanks again and the same to you!
You are absolutely right. The terrorists were trained and hold up in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Iraq was a ruse because George, Jr. wanted to finish the work started by his father. And, of course, much of it was probably about oil.
I understand.
September 11, 2001 was not an ordinary date for the United States or the rest of the world. That day terror flooded the thoughts of all of us.
An excellent piece of writing to remember this fateful date
Thank you very much for the kind words.
You are welcome.

Logged, thank you sir!
I still teared up watched the Fox overview of the day.
I feel the same way.
I wrote a paper about 9/11 for an emergency management class in college. Some of what you’ve written is true. Our intelligence agencies and leaders did not believe that an attack like that was possible and so, they didn’t act. Just like in the Trump assassination attempt, there was no coordinated communication network. Police and fire departments were using different radio channels and could not communicate with each other. Thank God for Rudy Giuliani! He remained cool and calm and became a stabilizing force during the aftermath. The failures of 9/11 led to improved emergency management protocols across the country.
Interesting. Well, it’s good to hear that at least something positive came from the mistakes of that day.
Certain life events are branded on our minds and souls. Oddly, in some sort of psycho-defensive reflex, we tend to recall first and foremost what we were doing at the moment of these events. If not for this buffering, we would all be crazy. Or crazier. The National Circus is shaping up to be another of those defining events.
You certainly got that right! And yes, the national circus looks like another such defining event. Thanks for dropping by, Espy!

Thanks!
Great posts as always. I am really upset about 9/11 and avoid discussing it. My family went through a traumatic bomb blast because of the incident back in 2003. It was all a result of the famous attack on the twin towers. While I can’t bring myself to discuss the incident, I often find that watching movies helps me cope with my past trauma. There’s several great movies which have been made on the subject of 9/11. For instance, Mira Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” is a great movie on the topic. It tells the story of a Muslim man that faces Islamophobia living in America after the 9/11 attacks. Riz Ahmed is amazing. It’s not an easy watch due to the subject matter. That being said, I would definitely without doubt recommend it.
Here’s why I loved the movie:
Thank you! I read your review of The Reluctant Fundamentalist a while back and the review was very well done!
