BALLADEER’S BLOG: COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS FROM AUGUST 29th

It’s Week Two in the divisions covered here at Balladeer’s Blog, with more divisions kicking off next week!

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

KISS THEIR BUTTE! – Out in Butte, MT the 21st ranked MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS welcomed the number 3 team in the nation – the GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 14-7 Orediggers lead by Halftime. The 3rd Quarter ended with Montana Tech up 21-14 and the 4th in a 29-22 Orediggers triumph!

HISTORY WAS MADE – The WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN played host to the latest college playing its FIRST EVER intercollegiate football game – the WILLIAM WOODS UNIVERSITY OWLS. As usual, it wasn’t the kind of history that the newbies would have liked, as the Statesmen led 38-0 at the Half before winning the game 59-0.

ONE-POINT WONDER – This game pitted the CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS against their hosts the UNIVERSITY OF PIKEVILLE BEARS. By the midpoint the Tigers were clinging to a 14-13 edge, and headed into the 4th Quarter Campbellsville University was on top 21-19. The Bears fought valiantly to the bitter end, and the final score was Tigers 34  Pikeville 33.

ROAD CLASSIC – The TAYLOR UNIVERSITY TROJANS traveled to take on the SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY SAINTS. A 14-7 lead for the Trojans in the opening Quarter turned into a 28-14 advantage come Halftime. After the break the Saints outscored Taylor University 14-6 but the Trojans prevailed 34-28.

MILD UPSET IN THE RANKINGS – In this game the TEXAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY RAMS took the field against the visiting 20th ranked LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS. The 1st Quarter ended with the Rams up 7-3 but by the Half the Blue Raiders tied things up at 24-24. Texas Wesleyan shut out their opponents from there and triumphed 34-24.

DO COMETS BEAT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS? – The MAYVILLE STATE COMETS hosted the MONTANA STATE-NORTHERN LIGHTS in this gridiron collision. After a scoreless opening Quarter the Comets led 9-7 at the midpoint. Mayville State made that a 23-7 advantage over their opponents to end the 3rd Quarter, and that held up as the final score as well.

BLOWOUTS – The (15) DICKINSON STATE BLUE HAWKS manhandled their guests the ROCKY MOUNTAIN COLLEGE BATTLIN’ BEARS by a count of 42-17    ###    And at the Ag Bowl the DAKOTA STATE TROJANS easily won the Chamber of Commerce Traveling Cup over the DAKOTA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Blue Tigers) 34-3.

NCAA DIVISION TWO

WHEN RANKED TEAMS CLASH – This game featured the 11th ranked MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS on the road against the number 22 NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE BEARCATS. It was a Tale of Two Halves as the Mavericks led 22-0 by the break while the Bearcats rallied a bit in the 2nd Half only to fall short as Minnesota State won out 36-22. 

NUMBER FOURTEEN ROLLS – The (14) DELTA STATE STATESMEN traveled to face the MARS HILL UNIVERSITY LIONS. After a scoreless 1st Quarter the Statesmen went out in front of Mars Hill U. 10-7 at the midpoint. The 3rd Quarter ended with Delta State up 24-10 before they exploded in the 4th to notch a 47-16 road rout.

INSTANT CLASSIC – The UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-WESTERN GRIFFONS visited the NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVERHAWKS. A 14-14 tie in the opening Quarter turned into a 31-14 advantage for the Riverhawks at Halftime. The Griffons pulled to within 31-27 going into the 4th Quarter, then went on to win the game 33-31.

DOUBLING UP ON THE COMPETITION – The WEST TEXAS A&M BUFFALOES authoritatively won a 42-21 clash at the SUL ROSS STATE LOBOS    ###    And the EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY WARRIORS handed their hosts the EDINBORO UNIVERSITY FIGHTING SCOTS a 24-12 loss.

ONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The EASTERN NEW MEXICO UNIVERSITY GREYHOUNDS took it on the road against the NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY COWBOYS. The Greyhounds led 21-7, 28-16 and 42-30 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarters respectively. A big 4th made the final tally ENMU 63  Cowboys 37. 

UNDER THE RADAR THRILLER – This game pitted the COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY MAVERICKS against the home standing TEXAS A&M AT KINGSVILLE JAVELINAS. An 8-7 Mavericks edge in the 1st Quarter became a 10-8 lead for the Javelinas at the Half. TAMK extended that to 13-8 in the 3rd Quarter before Colorado Mesa came back to win the game 16-13.

ODDBALL GAME OF THE NIGHT – The UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT KEARNEY LOPERS found themselves on the road against the CHADRON STATE EAGLES. The Lopers grabbed a 7-0 lead in the opening Quarter and extended that to an 18-6 advantage at Halftime. NEITHER TEAM scored in the 2nd Half, making 18-6 the final score as well.

BATTLES OF COOL NAMED TEAMS – The COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES clobbered their hosts the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS 35-6   ###   Meanwhile, the UNIVERSITY OF MARY MARAUDERS defeated the UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES 23-6   ###   And the WALSH UNIVERSITY CAVALIERS won 41-21 at the WEST LIBERTY UNIVERSITY HILLTOPPERS.

NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association)

DOWN GOES NUMBER TWO – The 10th ranked MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COLLEGE BULLDOGS knocked off the country’s number 2 team, the EAST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE LIONS. A 14-14 Halftime tie became a 21-21 deadlock to end the 3rd Quarter. The 4th saw the Bulldogs down East Mississippi College by a score of 34-28.

DRAGON CHOW – In this game the number 3 team in the nation – the HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS – welcomed the NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE BRONCOS (should be the Cavalry). The storied Blue Dragons led NMMI 28-7 at the midpoint, then coasted to a 42-10 smackdown victory.

GRAND BATTLE – The DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS took the field against the TYLER COLLEGE APACHES. The Apaches led Dodge City College 14-7 in the 1st Quarter and 17-10 at the Half. The Conquistadors shut out Tyler from there, pulling to within 17-13 in the 3rd before winning the game 20-17.

ONE-POINT WONDER – The PEARL RIVER COLLEGE WILDCATS paid a visit to the 7th ranked NORTHWEST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE RANGERS. By Halftime the score was knotted up at 17-17. The Rangers took a 20-17 edge in the 3rd Quarter but the Wildcats came from behind in the 4th for a 24-23 victory.

WE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A BASEBALL GAME BROKE OUT – Conversely, some would call it old school football as the ITAWAMBA COLLEGE INDIANS traveled to face the HINDS COLLEGE EAGLES. A 7-0 1st Quarter lead for the Eagles became a 7-7 tie at the midpoint. After the break the only points came from an Indians field goal as Itawamba College won 10-7.

NO KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES – This game pitted the number 14 JONES COLLEGE BOBCATS against the visiting MISSISSIPPI DELTA COLLEGE TROJANS. Come Halftime the Bobcats were on top of Mississippi Delta College 27-3, and from there Jones College coasted to a 41-9 victory over the Trojans.

ROAD WARRIORS – The EAST CENTRAL COLLEGE WARRIORS took it on the road against the NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE TIGERS. The teams were tied at 7-7 in the 1st Quarter but the Tigers led 14-7 at the Half. The Warriors went up 17-14 in the 3rd Quarter then consummated a 23-14 triumph in the 4th.
