HARRY HOUDINI’S SILENT FILMS – I review the legendary Harry Houdini’s work in silent cinema. From his 1918-1919 sci-fi serial The Master Mystery to his movies: The Grim Game (1919) – about a crusading reporter framed for murder by a criminal gang; Terror Island (1920) – in which Houdini plays an inventor with a new type of submarine who uses it to save his lady love from evil tycoons and deadly foes on a lost island; The Man from Beyond (1922) – Houdini stars as a man thawed out from a hundred years frozen in the Arctic Ice and whose new psychic senses propel him into adventure; and Haldane of the Secret Service (1923) – in which Harry plays a U.S. Secret Service Agent who takes on a gang of counterfeiters and the global syndicate behind them. Thanks so much for this post. I’m a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock but had no idea at all that he made silent movies during the 1920’s. Sound played such a strong role in his movies so it’s surprising that he also made silent films without noise. Do you have a favorite Hitchcock movie?
My favorite movie that I keep returning to is “North by Northwesr”. A fantastic espionage film that laid foundations for modern day James Bond. Cary Grant is amazing. If you’re a fan of the filmmaker, this film is a must-see.
