A CHRISTMAS CAROL – A GHOST STORY FOR CHRISTMAS (1995)

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Balladeer’s Blog’s 14th Annual Christmas Carol-A-Thon wraps up with this production from Quicksilver Radio Theater.

qrt christmas carolA CHRISTMAS CAROL – A GHOST STORY FOR CHRISTMAS (1995) – Remember Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater? Switch it to another name for that deity and you get Quicksilver Radio Theater. QRT went to great pains to treat listeners to as authentic a simulation of old-time radio dramas as possible.

This production was first broadcast on Christmas Eve of 1995, then was rerun the next day. For years afterward it was syndicated to assorted NPR stations.

Craig Wichman stars as Ebenezer Scrooge under the direction of Jay Stern. Anthony Cinelli serves as the Narrator, while Tony Scheinman does double duty as Marley’s Ghost and the Ghost of Christmas Present. Nephew Fred and Fezziwig are portrayed by Joseph Franchini.

John Prave brings Bob Cratchit to life, while Elizabeth Stull is Tiny Tim. The Ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge’s lost love Belle, and Mrs. Cratchit are played by Deborah Barta, Jodi Bothelo and Ghislane Nichols.

Obviously, this 55-minute radio drama will appeal only to a very niche audience. If you’re not all that thrilled with actual archived radio shows from the 1930s onward, then you likely won’t get into this valentine to such productions.

The performances in this Quicksilver Radio Theater version of A Christmas Carol are competent but nothing spectacular. Much of the fun comes from the faithful sound effects by Clyde Baldo, in my opinion, but Paul Davis praised Craig Wichman as “a Scrooge for all seasons.”

Sorry if this Carol seems a bit anticlimactic compared to my usual Christmas Carol-A-Thon finales, but regular readers may recall I moved up what was originally going to be this year’s final presentation – A VHS Christmas Carol Live! – to December 21st. You can read that review HERE

Well, that wraps up another Christmas Carol-a-Thon! Be here the Friday after Thanksgiving, when the 2024 edition kicks off!

  1. Merry Merry to you. Surprised how many foreign films [watching many lately for the dismal offerings native to USoffA] are unconsciously “Christmas Carol” while not Christmas Past, Present, and Future, are of Grinchiness and lost meaning of the season. Good reading, yours, stay strong with it. Espie.

  2. Merry Christmas and a hapy new year.

  3. MSM Yellow Journalism compares to the famous fantasy Santa Claus/JeZeus fraud. This propaganda rhetoric models after the pathetic propaganda made by the post ’48 Arab defeat, that Zionist, following the 1880s Russian pogroms, that they stole the land of Palestinian away from the “red man” original Palestinian inhabitants. Palestine 1922 to 1948 R.I.P. What a farce. The Gosepels/new testament, in point of fact, it mirrors, the forgery of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, written in the late 1890s by the Czar’s Secret Police.

  4. Ciao Balladeer!!! Merry Christmas! 😀

A great post. I am not a huge fan of “A Christmas Carol” but I found this to be a really interesting post. I do love stories which take place during the Christmas season. There are many great movies which have taken place during festive season of Christmas. Recently, I really loved the Oscar-winning movie “The Holdovers”. It told the story of a strict history professor bonding with misfit students during Christmas. A beautiful movie celebrating the holiday season. Here’s why it’s worth watching:
