Wingate Bulldogs helmetKNOCKING OFF NUMBER SEVEN – In NCAA Division Two, the WINGATE UNIVERSITY BULLDOGS welcomed the number 7 team in the nation – the LENOIR-RHYNE UNIVERSITY BEARS. Halftime saw the Bulldogs on top 17-14 but the 3rd Quarter ended in a 20-20 tie. In the explosive 4th Wingate U. won the game 34-30.

Georgetown (KY) TigersAND ANOTHER NUMBER SEVEN TAKES A FALL – Over in the NAIA, the number 9 GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS played host to the 7th ranked LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS. This was a defensive epic, with the Tigers leading by a mere 7-0 at the Half before beating the Blue Raiders 10-0.

Valdosta_StNUMBER EIGHT GOES TUMBLING AFTER – This game pitted D2’s 24th ranked VALDOSTA STATE BLAZERS against the number 8 UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS. A 21-21 Halftime deadlock remained unchanged in the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th the Blazers pulled off a last minute 31-28 upset.

wayne state ne wildcatsDOWN GOES NUMBER TEN – Staying in D2 for the moment, the WAYNE STATE WILDCATS took the field against the visiting 10th ranked AUGUSTANA (SD) VIKINGS. The Wildcats put the Vikings on Upset Alert with their 14-2 lead at the midpoint. From there, a Vikings rally fell short as Wayne State won the game 14-12.

Illinois College Blue Boys helmetNINETY-THREE – Down in NCAA Division Three, the ILLINOIS COLLEGE BLUEBOYS held serve against their guests the GRINNELL COLLEGE PIONEERS. The Blueboys proceeded to fold, spindle and mutilate the Pioneers, leading them 31-0 in the opening Quarter and never letting up. The final score was Illinois College NINETY-THREE  Grinnell College NOTHING!

Williamson Trade HelmetUSCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – In the United States Collegiate Athletic Association the WILLIAMSON COLLEGE OF THE TRADES MECHANICS held a Home Stand against the CAPP ACADEMY CRUSADERS. Neither team scored in the 1st Quarter, but the Crusaders were up 8-6 at the break. A scoreless 3rd Quarter was followed by a 12-8 win for Williamson.

hamilton college continentalsFOUR OVERTIMES WEREN’T ENOUGH – Back in D3, the HAMILTON COLLEGE CONTINENTALS clashed with the visiting TUFTS UNIVERSITY JUMBOS. A 17-17 tie to end the 4th Quarter became 24-24 in the 1st OT and 32-32 in the 2nd. In the FIFTH OVERTIME the Continentals managed a 36-34 victory.

northwestern ia redTUSSLE IN THE TOP THREE – The top ranked defending national champs – the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS – welcomed the number three MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS yesterday. The Mustangs led 20-13 come Halftime, but the Red Raiders shut out Morningside the rest of the game. Northwestern College made it a 20-20 tie in the 3rd Quarter and finally a 34-20 victory.

Oklahoma Panhandle State helmet NEWSHUTOUTS – The OKLAHOMA PANHANDLE STATE AGGIES (should be the Okies) obliterated the NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY STALLIONS 57-0   ###   Meanwhile, the KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY COYOTES won 31-0 at the TABOR COLLEGE BLUE JAYS   ###   And the (25) DORDT UNIVERSITY DEFENDERS blanked the BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS 49-0.

Montana Tech Orediggers brand newHOME AND AWAY – For the Home item, the (23) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS downed the ARIZONA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FIRESTORM in a memorable 40-31 battle    ###    And for the Away portion, the WILLIAM PENN UNIVERSITY STATESMEN won 37-16 at the CULVER-STOCKTON COLLEGE WILDCATS. 

Midland UniversityA DOUBLE-SHOT OF THAT OT LOVE – The MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS found themselves on the road against the CONCORDIA (NE) BULLDOGS. The 4th Quarter ended in a 24-24 tie, with the 1st OT ending in a 31-31 deadlock. In the 2nd Overtime the Warriors eked out a 39-37 win.

Sterling helmetSENIOR DAY – In this game the STERLING COLLEGE WARRIORS took on the visiting UNIVERSITY OF MARY SPIRES in a Senior Day event. The Warriors saw their comfortable 23-7 Halftime lead slip away as they held on against a Spires rally for a 33-30 victory.

olivet nazarene tigers pawTHE JOUST IN JOLIET – The OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Purple Tigers) traveled to face the ST. FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS. ONU kept the Fighting Saints off the scoreboard until the 4th Quarter while racking up points all the way. The Tigers won 35-7.

North Greenville helmet NEWCRUSADE AGAINST THE CHOCTAWS – The NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS welcomed the MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE CHOCTAWS. The Crusaders were all business, leading the Choctaws 28-10 by Halftime, then coasting to a 34-10 triumph.

Ottawa (AZ) SpiritONE TEAM WAS PLAYING BASKETBALL – The OTTAWA UNIVERSITY (AZ) SPIRIT visited the LANGSTON UNIVERSITY LIONS yesterday. This was a tale of two Halves as the midpoint score was 23-20 for the Spirit, but after the break Ottawa U. exploded for a 68-27 blowout win.  

NCAA DIVISION TWO

bloomsburg-huskies-helmet-newOTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The BLOOMSBURG UNIVERSITY HUSKIES dragged down the visiting number 21 SHEPHERD UNIVERSITY RAMS by a score of 14-10    ###    And the SOUTHWEST BAPTIST UNIVERSITY BEARCATS toppled their guests the 22nd ranked TRUMAN STATE BULLDOGS 20-17.

Gannon Univ Golden KnightsONE-POINT WONDER – This game pitted the GANNON UNIVERSITY GOLDEN KNIGHTS against the Home Standing INDIANA UNIVERSITY IN PENNSYLVANIA CRIMSON HAWKS. The Crimson Hawks led 9-3 in the 1st Quarter and 15-6 at the midpoint. After a scoreless 3rd Quarter, the 4th saw the Golden Knights come from behind for a 16-15 triumph.

Northwood UROAD WINS – The NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY TIMBER WOLVES won 28-13 at the KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE PANTHERS   ###   The ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS won an 18-16 thriller at the EAST CENTRAL UNIVERSITY TIGERS   ###   And the SOUTH DAKOTA M&T HARDROCKERS obliterated their hosts the ADAMS STATE GRIZZLIES 63-9. 

Concord UniversitySOMEONE’S “O” HAD TO GO – The CONCORD UNIVERSITY MOUNTAIN LIONS and the visiting WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BOBCATS both came into this game winless. A 14-3 1st Quarter lead for the Mountain Lions set the tone, as Concord University won out 38-9.

NCAA DIVISION THREE

Maryville Scots helmetODD GAME, ODDER OVERTIME – The MARYVILLE COLLEGE SCOTS hosted the BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY BLAZERS on Saturday. The Scots led 7-0 by Halftime but the Blazers knotted things up at 7-7 to end Regulation. In the unusual Overtime session, Maryville College logged 7 points then got a pick-six from Belhaven for a 20-7 victory.

Washington and Jefferson PresidentsUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE PRESIDENTS survived a 38-33 visit from the CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY SPARTANS   ###   Elsewhere, the MARITIME COLLEGE PRIVATEERS defeated the COAST GUARD ACADEMY BEARS 24-21   ###   And the GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE GUSTIES won a 41-40 OT affair at the SAINT OLAF COLLEGE OLES.

Curry ColonelsCOLONELS WIN CLOSE AND IN A BLOWOUT – The CURRY COLLEGE COLONELS hosted the NICHOLS COLLEGE BISON and edged them out 48-46    ###    And the CENTRE COLLEGE COLONELS defeated their guests the SEWANEE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH TIGERS by a score of 54-22.

Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops helmetBEAT THE COLLEGE EVERYBODY LIKES TO SEE LOSE – The OHIO WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY BATTLING BISHOPS took it on the road against the despised OBERLIN COLLEGE’s team the YEOMEN. It was no contest as the Battling Bishops utterly demolished the Yeomen to the tune of 50-7.

NJCAA DIVISION ONE

Mississippi Delta College TrojansWHACKING NUMBER FOUR – The MISSISSIPPI DELTA COLLEGE TROJANS traveled to face the nation’s 4th ranked JONES COLLEGE BOBCATS. The Bobcats led 21-17 at Halftime and 31-23 to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th the Trojans came from behind for a 36-33 victory.

Coffeyville Red Ravens helmetKANSAS CLASH – The COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS took the field against the visiting (13) BUTLER (KS) GRIZZLIES. The defenses dominated the opening Half, with neither team scoring. After the break the Red Ravens went up 6-0 in the 3rd Quarter, then won the game 15-7.

blinn buccaneers newerROAD WARRIORS – The BLINN COLLEGE BUCCANEERS visited the NORTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA A&M GOLDEN NORSEMEN and downed them 28-21    ###    And the (1) HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS notched a 13-0 victory at the HIGHLAND COLLEGE SCOTTIES.

Kilgore CollegeSMACKDOWNS – The (3) KILGORE COLLEGE RANGERS tore apart their Homecoming opponents, the (11) TYLER COLLEGE APACHES, by a score of 55-18   ###   Meanwhile, the NAVARRO COLLEGE BULLDOGS mauled the CISCO COLLEGE WRANGLERS 35-7   ###   And the GARDEN CITY COLLEGE BRONCBUSTERS shut out the ELLSWORTH COLLEGE PANTHERS 25-0.  

NJCAA DIVISION THREE (no football in their D2)

DuPage ChaparralsNUMBER ONE ROLLS – The number 1 defending national champs, the COLLEGE OF DUPAGE CHAPARRALS, welcomed the COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LIONS for this game. The Lions never stood a chance as the Chaparrals eviscerated them 56-16.  

Louisburg Hurricanes helmets NEWBLOWN AWAY – The LOUISBURG COLLEGE HURRICANES were less than gracious hosts to the MYRTLE BEACH COLLEGIATE ACADEMY MARAUDERS. The Hurricanes dominated their opponents on both sides of the ball in their 41-6 win. 

Monroe College Mustangs helmetHORSE SENSE – In this game the MONROE COLLEGE MUSTANGS found themselves on the road against the HOCKING COLLEGE HAWKS. This was a smash-mouth grudge match of cliches, with the Mustangs coming out on top in the end by a score of 13-7.

nassau lionsNEW YORK STATE OF MIND – The NASSAU COUNTY COLLEGE LIONS took the field against the visiting HUDSON VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS (should be the Dutch). Before long, the Lions asserted their dominance, leaving the Vikings further and further behind enroute to a 23-7 win.

Modesto College Pirates helmetUPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The number 15 MODESTO COLLEGE PIRATES crushed their hosts the 8th ranked REEDLEY COLLEGE TIGERS by a final tally of 42-7    ###    And the EAST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE HUSKIES won by a tight 33-28 score at the 13th ranked CITRUS COLLEGE OWLS.

Los angeles valley monarchsHAPPY HOME STAND – The LOS ANGELES VALLEY COLLEGE MONARCHS welcomed the PIERCE COLLEGE BRAHMA BULLS in a battle of cool-named teams. The Brahma Bulls were up 6-3 in the 1st Quarter but the Monarchs took control from there. A 24-12 LAVC Halftime advantage ultimately became a 46-28 Monarchs win.

Mount San Antonio College MountiesDOES ANYBODY PLAY CLOSE GAMES ANYMORE? – The (3) MOUNT SAN ANTONIO COLLEGE MOUNTIES demolished the ORANGE COAST COLLEGE PIRATES 66-13   ###   Elsewhere, the SAN DIEGO MESA COLLEGE OLYMPIANS clobbered their hosts the SOUTHWESTERN (CA) COLLEGE JAGUARS 49-8   ###   And the SANTA ANA COLLEGE DONS won 58-21 at the WEST LOS ANGELES COLLEGE WILDCATS.

College of the Canyons helmetYOU WANTED A CLOSE GAME? – This game saw the (16) COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS COUGARS do battle with the home standing MOORPARK COLLEGE RAIDERS. The Cougars led 14-7 in the opening Quarter and 28-14 at Halftime. The Raiders rallied after the break but fell short as the College of the Canyons logged a 35-30 triumph.

  1. Hey, where are you based out of and which is your favorite team here? I’m pretty close to Hickory NC so it’s wild seeing you write about Lenoir Rhyne!

    • I’m in Northern Virginia, myself. Ironically I got so jaded to college football that I was no longer personally invested enough to have favorite teams, so I just took to covering these lower divisions just for fun since they get comparatively little publicity.
