uw lacrosse eaglesTOPPLING NUMBER THREE – In NCAA Division Three, the 14th ranked UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT LACROSSE EAGLES visited the number 3 team in the nation – the UW-WHITEWATER WARHAWKS. A 7-7 1st Quarter tie became a 17-14 Eagles advantage by Halftime. Lacrosse extended their lead to 27-17 in the 3rd Quarter, then held on in the 4th for a 37-34 victory.

Georgetown (KY) TigersNUMBER SIX TAKES A FALL – Up in the NAIA, the number 19 GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS took on the home standing 6th ranked BETHEL (NC) WILDCATS. The Tigers parlayed a 21-10 lead at the Half into a 31-16 advantage in the 3rd Quarter, then ended the 4th on top 52-24.

Arkansas TechWE WENT TO A FOOTBALL GAME BUT A BASEBALL GAME BROKE OUT – NCAA Division Two’s ARKANSAS TECH WONDERBOYS traveled to face the SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE BULLDOGS. Unyielding defense was the name of the game as the Bulldogs went up 7-0 in the opening Quarter, a score that held up at Halftime and at the end of the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th, the Wonderboys came from behind for a 9-7 triumph.

Williamson Trade HelmetUSCAA GAME OF THE WEEK – In the USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association), the WILLIAMSON COLLEGE OF THE TRADES MECHANICS welcomed the CONNECTICUT STATE COLLEGE WILDCATS. A 6-6 1st Quarter tie morphed into a 20-6 Mechanics lead by the Half. The Wildcats shut out their opponents after the break, but Williamson Trade prevailed 20-12.

Carnegie Mellon TartansEIGHTY – In D3, the CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY TARTANS played host to the THIEL COLLEGE TOMCATS. The Tartans grabbed a quick 20-0 lead in the opening Quarter and never looked back. By the time the game ended CMU had utterly annihilated the Tomcats by a score of 80-22.

New Mexico Mil Inst BroncosANOTHER NUMBER SIX GOES DOWN – The NJCAA’s NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE BRONCOS (should be Cavalry) welcomed the nation’s number 6 TYLER COLLEGE APACHES to the Wool Bowl last night. The Apaches held a 17-10 advantage at Halftime, but NMMI dominated the 2nd Half for a 31-17 victory.

Montana Western Bulldogs NEWOTHER UPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The UM-WESTERN BULLDOGS won 38-28 at the (11) MONTANA TECH OREDIGGERS   ###   The MIDLAND UNIVERSITY WARRIORS edged their hosts the (14) DORDT UNIVERSITY DEFENDERS 10-7   ###   Meanwhile, the ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY LAKERS toppled the ST. FRANCIS (IL) FIGHTING SAINTS 28-24   ###   And the CUMBERLANDS UNIVERSITY PHOENIX defeated the (23) UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS PATRIOTS 21-17.   

Jamestown College JimmiesHOME STAND – The UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN JIMMIES salvaged a bit more pride for the 2023 season, this time against the visiting MOUNT MARTY UNIVERSITY LANCERS. Neither team scored in the 1st Quarter, but the Jimmies were up 14-6 by Halftime. The game ended with Jamestown downing the Lancers 24-13. 

Briar Cliff Chargers helmet NEWUNDER THE RADAR CLASSICS – The BRIAR CLIFF UNIVERSITY CHARGERS survived an 18-16 visit from the DOANE UNIVERSITY TIGERS   ###   Elsewhere, the AVE MARIA UNIVERSITY GYRENES won 26-20 at the THOMAS UNIVERSITY NIGHTHAWKS   ###   And the POINT UNIVERSITY SKYHAWKS edged the BLUEFIELD COLLEGE RAMBLING RAMS 33-31.

louisiana christian u wildcatsSHUTOUT – The LOUISIANA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY WILDCATS took the field against the NORTH AMERICAN UNIVERSITY STALLIONS on Saturday. It was all Wildcats as they led the Stallions 20-0 in the opening Quarter and 46-0 at the Half on their way to a 55-0 rout.

southwestern assemblies of god helmetBLOWOUTS – The SOUTHWESTERN ASSEMBLIES OF GOD UNIVERSITY LIONS tore apart the home standing WAYLAND BAPTIST PIONEERS (should be Flying Ws) 37-16    ###    And the UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN (MN) EAGLES smacked down the CROWN COLLEGE POLARS by a final tally of 47-23.

Campbellsville UniversityROAD WARRIORS – The CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Burgundy Tigers) took it on the road against the FAULKNER UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Fury). After leading Faulkner 19-5 at the midpoint, Campbellsville shut them out the rest of the way as they won the game 36-5.

North Greenville CrusadersCRUSADE IN MURFREESBORO – The NORTH GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY CRUSADERS traveled to face the CHOWAN UNIVERSITY HAWKS. The Crusaders were on top 17-10 at Halftime but the Hawks cut that to a 17-16 difference in the 3rd Quarter. The 4th saw NGU win 31-16.

olivet nazarene tigers pawTHE BATTLE OF BOURBONNAISE – This game pitted the OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY TIGERS (should be Purple Tigers) against the visiting CENTRAL METHODIST UNIVERSITY EAGLES. Things were knotted up at 17-17 come Halftime, but the Tigers took over in the 2nd Half for a 34-20 victory.

NCAA DIVISION TWO

wayne state ne wildcatsUPSETS IN THE RANKINGS – The only Upset in the D2 rankings yesterday came in the game between the WAYNE STATE (NE) WILDCATS and the visiting number 21 MINNESOTA-DULUTH BULLDOGS. At Halftime the Wildcats put the Bulldogs on Upset Alert with a 14-10 edge, then consummated the Upset 28-18.

Southeastern Oklahoma Savage StormONE-POINT WONDER – On Saturday the SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE SAVAGE STORM welcomed the UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS AT MONTICELLO BOLL WEEVILS. By the break the Boll Weevils were on top 14-0, but the Savage Storm pulled to within 21-10 to end the 3rd Quarter. In the 4th SOSU came from behind to win the game 22-21.

northeastern state river hawks newerALL NAME GAMES – The NORTHEASTERN STATE RIVER HAWKS won 28-13 at the LINCOLN (MO) UNIVERSITY BLUE TIGERS   ###   The MISSOURI S&T MINERS clobbered the UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY PEACOCKS 31-6   ###   And the (24) UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-WESTERN GRIFFONS annihilated their hosts the WASHBURN UNIVERSITY ICHABODS 61-21.

CSU-PuebloHAPPY HOME COMING – This Home Coming game pitted the COLORADO STATE AT PUEBLO THUNDER WOLVES against the visiting ADAMS STATE GRIZZLIES. The Thunder Wolves had the situation under control 27-10 by the break and shut out the Grizzlies from there. They kept adding points of their own for a 43-10 blowout victory.    

NCAA DIVISION THREE 

Ithaca BombersCLOSE CALL FOR NUMBER SIXTEEN – No other Upsets in D3 yesterday, but the 16th ranked ITHACA COLLEGE BOMBERS had their hands full with their hosts the RENSSELAER POLYTECHNICAL INSTITUTE ENGINEERS. The Bombers led 10-7 at the break, but the Engineers forced Overtime with a 17-17 tie to end the 4th Quarter. In the extra session Ithaca College won out 20-17.

colby college white mules newerFOUR QUARTERS WEREN’T ENOUGH – The COLBY COLLEGE WHITE MULES battled it out with the visiting WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY CARDINALS and beat them 20-13 in Overtime    ###    Meanwhile, the DICKINSON COLLEGE RED DEVILS prevailed 27-24 in an extra session against the CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY CAPTAINS. 

pacific lutheran lutes helmetWAR IN THE PACIFIC – Out west, the PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY LUTES took the field against the visiting PACIFIC UNIVERSITY BOXERS. The Boxers were on top 10-7 at the break, but the Lutes came back in the 3rd for a 14-10 lead before winning in the 4th 17-10.

LOVE – The LEBANON VALLEY COLLEGE FLYING DUTCHMEN visited the WIDENER UNIVERSITY PRIDE and defeated them 27-24 in Double Overtime.    ###    And the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN AT OSHKOSH TITANS eked out a 48-46 Double Overtime win over their hosts the UW-STOUT BLUE DEVILS.

Hutchinson Blue DragonsEASY AS ONE, TWO, THREE – The (1) HUTCHINSON COLLEGE BLUE DRAGONS incinerated the (11) DODGE CITY COLLEGE CONQUISTADORS 46-10   ###   The (2) IOWA WESTERN COLLEGE REIVERS won 20-13 at the (5) SNOW COLLEGE BADGERS   ###   And the (3) IOWA CENTRAL COLLEGE TRITONS survived a 26-20 visit from the COFFEYVILLE COLLEGE RED RAVENS.

East Mississippi College Lions helmet profileUPSET IN THE TOP TEN – The 12th ranked EAST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE LIONS took it on the road against the country’s number 10 NORTHWEST MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE RANGERS yesterday. A tight 14-10 Halftime edge for the Lions ended as a comfortable 35-17 victory.

sussex county skylandersPIE IN THE SKY – In this game the SUSSEX COUNTY COLLEGE SKYLANDERS welcomed the HOCKING COLLEGE HAWKS. The up-and-coming Skylanders football program improved to 4-1 on the season by sending the Hawks home bruised by a 38-26 loss.

NJCAA DIVISION THREE (no football in their D2) 

Georgia Military College BulldogsDOWN GOES NUMBER FIVE – The GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE BULLDOGS took the field against the visiting 5th ranked LOUISBURG COLLEGE HURRICANES. It was all Bulldogs all the time as they dominated the Hurricanes on both sides of the ball. The final count was Georgia Military College 37  Louisburg College 0.

DuPage ChaparralsNUMBER ONE ROLLS – The two-time defending national champions – the top ranked COLLEGE OF DUPAGE CHAPARRALS – found themselves on the road against the COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LIONS. The Chaparrals took care of business with a 17-6 victory.

Mesabi TechROAD WARRIORS – The MINNESOTA NORTH COLLEGE AT MESABI RANGE NORSE managed a thrilling 34-28 triumph over the storied MINNESOTA STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGE SPARTANS    ###    And the CENTRAL LAKES COLLEGE AT BRAINERD RAIDERS (should be Brainstorms) won 28-7 at the MNC-VERMILION IRONHAWKS (formerly the Ironmen).

Hudson Valley Vikings helmetUNDER THE RADAR CLASSIC – This game pitted the HUDSON VALLEY COLLEGE VIKINGS (should be Dutch) against the visiting ERIE COLLEGE KATS. The Kats were on top 12-8 at Halftime, but the Vikings came from behind for a 14-12 win after the break.

Monterey Peninsula LobosPENINSULAR WAR – The MONTEREY PENINSULA COLLEGE LOBOS traveled to take on the WEST HILLS COLLEGE AT COALINGA FALCONS. By Halftime the Lobos were out in front 14-0. They kept up the pressure after the break, ultimately finishing off the Falcons 27-13.

san jose city college jaguarsBLOWOUT – In this game the SAN JOSE CITY COLLEGE JAGUARS hosted the YUBA COLLEGE FORTY-NINERS. A 14-0 Jaguars lead in the 1st Quarter turned into 24-0 at the Half. The 3rd Quarter ended in a 43-12 SJCC advantage and the 4th in a 50-18 win for the Jaguars.

merced-blue-devils-helmet-newHOME AND AWAY – The home part of this post: the MERCED COLLEGE BLUE DEVILS trashed the visiting CABRILLO COLLEGE SEAHAWKS 31-7    ###    For the away part, the HARTNELL COLLEGE PANTHERS won handily 38-6 at the GAVILAN COLLEGE RAMS.

College of the redwoods corsairs helmetSLOW START TO A SHOOTOUT – The COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS CORSAIRS and their guests the LOS MEDANOS COLLEGE MUSTANGS went scoreless in the 1st Quarter. By the break the Corsairs were up 21-6. The 2nd Half saw points fly like shrapnel, with College of the Redwoods winning out 42-24.

    • I agree with Lulu and Charlee! And that reminds me that way back around 2011 or 2012 I did a cats vs dogs blog post about teams named after felines and canines.
