BETWEEN TIME AND TIMBUKTU – A SPACE FANTASY BY KURT VONNEGUT JR (March 13th) – Dated humor mars this generally well made 86-minute sci-fi story directed by Fred Barzyk and based on the writings of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
The winner of the Blast-Off Space Food jingle contest gets to be launched toward a time/space fluke called a chronosynclastic infundibulum. It was believed that someone with the “poetic” sensibilities needed to create a good commercial jingle would be capable of finding the words to describe such a phenomenon.
The space vessel – a Prometheus 5 rocket – explodes, and the main character Stoney Stevenson, played by William Hickey, experiences time as multiple events that all occur simultaneously, not sequentially. Stevenson encounters a variety of characters and situations created by Kurt Vonnegut.
Among those characters:
The cult leader Bokonon, and Dr. Hoenikker from Cat’s Cradle …
Lionel J. Howard from Welcome to the Monkey House …
Dr. Paul Proteus from Player Piano …
The title character from the short story Harrison Bergeron …
And Wanda June from Happy Birthday, Wanda June.
Comedy team Bob & Ray costarred, along with Susan Sullivan, Kevin McCarthy, Helen Stenborg, Franklin Cover, Philip Bruns and Dolph Sweet.
Between Time and Timbuktu will be best enjoyed by people who are already Vonnegut fans but is also ideal for introducing new readers to the author’s works. The telefilm has a feeling similar to Kurt’s own Slaughterhouse Five as well as the future, unrelated production Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

Bob & Ray probably pretty well defines your “dated humor” assessment. Still, gotta be a damned sight better than “Barbie.”
Yeah, I would imagine so. And the outdated humor also applies to a lot of overly broad moments in this television special.
Great line–“Dated humor mars this generally well made 86-minute sci-fi story”. Isn’t that the truth with so many of the older works. But not all!
Thanks, you know it! Very true!
