Comment: My Canadian readers tell me Carabins are a military unit which wields Carbines, making this name virtually unique.

OTTAWA GEE GEES

Location: Ottawa, ON

Comment: GG originally stood for “Garnet & Grey” so it was combined with Gee Gee, slang for a racehorse, hence the horse on the helmet.

ACADIA AXEMEN

Location: Wolfville, NS

Comment: The name Axemen still sounds cool, despite its use in the title of a few reality shows in recent years.

BISHOP’S GAITERS

Location: Lennoxville, QC

Comment: Gaiters were boot coverings worn by Anglican Bishops. The name sounds great and gets extra points for the obscure meaning.

TORONTO VARSITY BLUES

Location: Toronto, ON

Comment: How can you not love a collegiate-sounding team name like “Varsity Blues?”

ST FRANCIS XAVIER X-MEN

Location: Antigonish, NS

Comment: America has college teams called the Avengers and the Defenders, so adding a team called X-Men seemed like a natural.

CALGARY DINOS

Location: Calgary, AB

Comment: What’s not to love about a team name like the Dinos! After all, they stomped on the terra!

CONCORDIA STINGERS

Location: Montreal, QC

Comment: These Georgian Warriors decided to go with the catchy nickname Stingers for their sports teams.

MOUNT ALLISON MOUNTIES

Location: Sackville, NB

Comment: America has the Mount San Antonio College Mounties, or else this team’s name would have put it higher on the list.

QUEEN’S GAELS

Location: Kingston, ON

Comment: Their fight song “Oil Thigh” is in Gaelic, hence the team’s name. Plus you just KNEW I would include any team whose fans sing Oil Thigh after a score.
