COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RESULTS FROM NOVEMBER 25th

*** NAIA ***

Southern Oregon RaidersFIRST QUARTERFINAL – The SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY RAIDERS traveled to the Blue Grass State to play the LINDSEY WILSON COLLEGE BLUE RAIDERS for the right to advance to the Semifinals. The Raiders led 14-0 in the 1st Quarter and 21-10 by Halftime but then had to withstand a furious comeback attempt by the Blue Raiders. Ultimately Southern Oregon University prevailed by a tight 34-29.

Reinhardt U Eagles helmetSECOND QUARTERFINAL – In this game the REINHARDT UNIVERSITY EAGLES (should be the Rottweilers) hosted the GEORGETOWN (KY) COLLEGE TIGERS. The Tigers led the Eagles 10-7 after 1 Quarter of play but Reinhardt University went on top 14-10 by the break. From there it was mostly a defensive struggle with the Eagles moving on by a score of 17-10. 

St Francis (IN)THIRD QUARTERFINAL – The top-seeded Defending Champions – the UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS (IN) COUGARS – took the field against the NORTHWESTERN (IA) COLLEGE RED RAIDERS. The Red Raiders’ hopes for a second straight Upset were dashed as the Cougars gave up one lone Field Goal in the 1st Quarter while taking a 14-3 Halftime lead enroute to a 30-3 victory.  

Morningside MustangsFOURTH QUARTERFINAL – This Quarterfinal pitted the MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE MUSTANGS against the visiting SAINT XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS. A 10-7 1st Quarter edge for the Mustangs was the closest the game ever got. After that Morningside College shut out the Cougars while putting up 14, 21 and 7 points of their own in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarters respectively for a 52-7 smackdown.

*** DIVISION TWO *** 

Texas A&M Commerce LionsA DOUBLE-SHOT OF THAT OT LOVE – In this Second Round of the Division Two playoffs the 5th seeded TEXAS A&M AT COMMERCE LIONS found themselves on the road against the Regional 1 seeds – the CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY WILDCATS. The Lions came back from being down 28-7 at Halftime to force Overtime with a 28-28 tie to end Regulation. The 1st OT ended in a 31-31 deadlock but in the 2nd OT Texas A&M at Commerce emerged with a 34-31 win.  

Ferris State BulldogsAND ANOTHER ONE SEED GOES DOWN – The top seeds in each Super Region get a Bye in the First Round of the Division Two playoffs, which brings up the old question about Rest or Rust? The 4 seeds – the FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS – traveled to face their Region’s top seeded FORT HAYS STATE TIGERS. The Bulldogs advanced with a 31-21 victory over the Tigers. 

Harding Bisons helmetCINDERELLA WITH HOOVES – The 7th seeded HARDING UNIVERSITY BISON took it on the road against their Region’s 3 seeds – the ASHLAND UNIVERSITY EAGLES. Last Saturday the Bison knocked off the Regional 2 seeds in Indianapolis and kept stampeding their way toward Midnight this time around as well. Harding University defeated the Eagles 34-24.

West Florida Argonauts helmetWILD WILD WEST – The 6 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA ARGONAUTS – are making their young football program’s first post-season appearance and already have two victories under their belt. Yesterday the Argonauts battled the 7th seeded UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA WOLVES. In this clash of Gulf South Conference foes the University of West Florida prevailed in a 17-14 Instant Classic.

West Alabama Tigers helmet NEWTHE SEC OF DIVISION TWO – This game pitted another pair of Gulf South Conference teams against each other. The Regional 1 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA TIGERS – took the field against the 5th seeded DELTA STATE STATESMEN. A 10-0 1st Quarter advantage for the Statesmen became a 20-10 Tigers lead at Halftime. The University of West Alabama hung on for a 27-20 triumph. 

Assumption Greyhounds helmetWIN IT BY NINETEEN – The 3rd seeded ASSUMPTION COLLEGE GREYHOUNDS welcomed the 7 seeds – the UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY OILERS, who were fresh off their First Round upset. The Greyhounds wanted no part of any surprise and flexed their on-field muscle in impressive fashion. The final tally in this game was Assumption College 45  Oilers 26.

IUP Crimson HawksIUP IS A-OKAY – The overall 1 seeds – the INDIANA UNIVERSITY IN PENNSYLVANIA CRIMSON HAWKS – faced the 5th seeded WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY GOLDEN RAMS. The Crimson Hawks showed absolutely no rust at all after their Bye last week and proceeded to fold, spindle and mutilate the hapless Golden Rams to the tune of 44-10.  

Minnesota State MavericksMASSACRE IN MANKATO – The MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS are the sole remaining 2 seeds and yesterday they squared off against their Region’s 3rd seeded MIDWESTERN STATE MUSTANGS. The Mavericks literally tripled up on their opponents, eviscerating the Mustangs by a final count of SIXTY-THREE to TWENTY-ONE!   

*** DIVISION THREE *** 

Frostburg State BobcatsFOR THE UPSET-MINDED – There was only one Upset in Division Three’s playoff games yesterday. The FROSTBURG STATE BOBCATS were on the road against the WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE PRESIDENTS. The Bobcats put the Presidents on Upset Alert early, leading 10-7 in the opening Quarter and 17-10 at the break. From there Frostburg State poured it on for a decisive 46-23 win.

St Thomas University TommiesTHEY HAD ‘EM ALL THE WAY – The UNIVERSITY OF SAINT THOMAS TOMMIES welcomed the BERRY COLLEGE VIKINGS for their Second Round game. The Tommies were on fire from the start, leading the Vikings 14-0 in the 1st Quarter and 22-0 at Halftime. From there the University of Saint Thomas coasted for a 29-13 victory and a trip to the Quarterfinals.

Oshkosh TitansTHREE, TWO, ONE … BLOWOUT! – The Top 3 teams had no real difficulties yesterday except deciding upon a margin of victory. The (3) UW-OSHKOSH TITANS spanked the NORTH CENTRAL (IL) CARDINALS 42-21    ###    The (2) UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION PURPLE RAIDERS dispatched the CASE WESTERN RESERVE SPARTANS in a 45-16 laugher   ###   And the (1) UNIVERSITY OF MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR CRUSADERS shut out the LINFIELD COLLEGE WILDCATS 24-zip.

Brockport State helmetONE HALF OF A CLOSE GAME – This clash between the COLLEGE AT BROCKPORT GOLDEN EAGLES and the WESLEY COLLEGE WOLVERINES was a Jekyll and Hyde affair. The 1st and 2nd Quarters ended in a 7-7 and 21-21 tie, respectively. But in the 2nd Half the Golden Eagles proceeded to annihilate the Wolverines, winning it by a score of 49-28.

Delaware_Valley_PANO MORE EAGLES – The DELAWARE VALLEY UNIVERSITY AGGIES played host to the HUSSON UNIVERSITY EAGLES, the last Eagles team left in the 2017 Division Three post-season. The Aggies shone in the 1st Half, shutting out their opponents 19-0 and then kept up the pace for a decisive 37-15 triumph.

wartburg knights helmetSQUARING THE OPPOSITION – This game pitted the WARTBURG COLLEGE KNIGHTS against the TRINE UNIVERSITY THUNDER. The Knights didn’t just double-up or triple-up on the Thunder. No, they SQUARED the offensive output of their opponents. A 21-0 1st Quarter advantage for Wartburg College was just the start of a FORTY-NINE to SEVEN beatdown!

*** CCCAA ***

San Mateo BulldogsNOR-CAL CHAMPIONSHIP – The COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO BULLDOGS visited the AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE BEAVERS for the right to advance to December 9th’s CCCAA Championship Game. The two teams were tied up at 3-3 in the 1st Quarter and 10-10 at Halftime. The Bulldogs seized a 24-10 advantage in the 3rd Quarter but had to hold on by their fingernails for a 24-21 triumph over the Beavers.   

Fullerton College HornetsSO-CAL CHAMPIONSHIP – The Defending CCCAA Champions – the FULLERTON COLLEGE HORNETS – weren’t just still alive AND still undefeated, they assumed nearly god-like proportions yesterday. The Hornets faced the RIVERSIDE CITY COLLEGE TIGERS and converted a 21-7 1st Quarter lead into a 41-16 margin at the break. Ultimately Fullerton College humiliated the Tigers SEVENTY-FIVE to SIXTEEN! *** It will be Hornets vs Bulldogs for the CCCAA title.
